BWV 812 813 814 815 816 817
The French Suites, BWV 812--817, are six suites which Johann Sebastian Bach wrote for the clavier (harpsichord or clavichord) between the years of 1722 and 1725. The suites were later given the name 'French' (first recorded usage by Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg in 1762) as a means of contrast with the English Suites (whose title is likewise a later appellation). The name was popularised by Bach's biographer Johann Nikolaus Forkel, who wrote in his 1802 biography of Bach, "One usually calls them French Suites because they are written in the French manner." This claim, however, is inaccurate: like Bach's other suites, they follow a largely Italian convention.
There is no surviving definitive manuscript of these suites, and ornamentation varies both in type and in degree across manuscripts.

Schiff wanders through the landscape of Bach's music in a state of sheer delight, familiarity and wonderment. His joy transcends all other thoughts as he is engulfed by Bach's magic and he communicates it to us without a trace of self-consciousness. No musician can do more.
No words . Angels sometimes sigh - in isolation - or in ensemble - when feeling - inner magic of peace and subtlest touch - that this music - evokes.
Fare thee well - on life's journey - all the way - inwards and upwards.
The fact this video has nearly 5 million views makes me feel relieved that people can still appreciate real music and a top quality performance when they hear it.
Yeah but on the other hand it's since 2012 :(

Andreas Schiff once said during an interview that he always starts every day by first playing a piece of Bach’s music regardless of whatever else he’s professionally required to perform. It says a lot about his regard for Bach but also explains why he plays so effortlessly with deep emotion and precision. We the audience are the beneficiaries of his devotion. Thanks Andreas.
As did Casals.

1 hr 20m of Bachs music, played by memory without missing a single note. Perfect Performance!
Asperger's?
He practiced for 50 years.
He’s one of the greatest pianists alive today. A real gem. How anyone can memorize so much music is beyond me.
He missed a few notes, but he knows how to cover it...
@@AmericasChoicethere arent barely any pianist that dont miss a few notes in a 1.5 hours recital
András Schiff. Together with J S Bach, my greatest musical hero. Schiff is testament to what love, extremely hard work, education and dedication can accomplish. Bach would have adored him.
Classical music isn't exclusive to professional musicians or music aficionados; it's for everyone. It can create a state of mind, stimulate creativity, and infuse beauty and art into our daily lives.
Let me just remind us what an enormous musical capacity Andras Schiff really is: He actually plays the French Suites, English Suites, WTC (both book 1 & 2) and the Goldberg Variations + + ....all by memory. Deep Respect
how many hours practiced there I wonder
@@SirJosephSanchez We are not talking hours I’m afraid. To get to Andras Schiff’s levels of musicianship doesn’t take hours, it takes several decades.
@@theclaverman Absolutely! Years!
And the 6 partitas and 6 keyboard concertos...it's unbelievable
I agree with everything you wrote, but to me it's incredible that this is only scratching the surface. As others wrote in the replies, the partitas, concerti, the french overture, italian concerto, two part inventions and sinfonias, I think i remember seeing him play the toccatas on spotify. Basically he played all of music by Bach. He might have omitted some much lesser known works, but I doubt there are many. And then... complete Mozart sonatas and many concerti, many Haydn sonatas and concerti, all Beethoven sonatas (I think there are a few violin sonatas as well, if not all) and concerti and other works of all of the classical trio composers works like variations. Most of Schubert sonatas, Impromtus, moments musicaux, wanderer, four hand pieces, songs, Chopin preludes, some etudes, i think he recorded the 2nd concerto, I know there are recordings of him performing first two ballades and scherzi (the only recording of him I can remember not liking very much), all important Schumann works, a lot of Brahms, both concerti, clarinet sonatas and many other works, Janacek, Bartok, a lot of chamber music. And conducting. He is out of this world. Whenever I study a new piece I check if there is a Schiff recording, and usually there is unless its russian or impressionist music.
I listen to this frequently. Both the composer and performer are fabulous. How lucky we are to be alive and appreciate beauty.
That's wright! Wonderful!

Bach’s keyboard music may not be as overtly flashy technically as that of say Rachmaninov or Liszt. But it is SO much more difficult to perform! With Bach, there is no where to hide. You can’t connect the various contrapuntal lines by just blurring it all together with the use of the sostenuto pedal, the way many pianists do with piano music of the Romantic era. With Bach you really can’t use the sostenuto pedal at all, as is the case with Schiff’s brilliant performances here. He’s creating smooth legato lines by using enormously complex fingering. And yet he makes it all sound so effortlessly beautiful! This is but one of the many reasons why Schiff is among the greatest of Bach keyboard performers of all time. I have major respect and admiration for this man. He has always been a source of enormous inspiration for me as a pianist. 🙏
Not a musician - but heart and mind - are sharing in an evocation of higher beauty and if one does not have the musicianship - one is elevated - in the mere vibrations - of peace and love - felt. Thanks
As with Schiff's live performance of the English Suites, I am in complete awe of his musicianship. His sense of the inner pulse of the music, his balancing of voices and his ability to make us grasp the structure of these works is without parallel. That he is able to do all this from memory only underscores how utterly Schiff inhabits these magnificent works. Bach's music never fails to exemplify the sense of balance, joy, and nuance to which every life should aspire.
I completely agree. His talks from the keyboard astonish me. I love Bach for beginners. Schiff’s depth of understanding is match by his skillful playing. It all appears effortless. Of course nothing could be further from the truth. There my musical appreciation spills over into my deepest admiration. His dedication to his art is inspirational
P.S. I am Yasuhiro Ono Japanese pediatric clinician who love peace. Thank you for your wonderful work.
For all the hundreds of times he must have played these masterful dances, Andras plays them with a wonder and fascination of a first encounter, yet with the precision, line, and joy of someone deeply familiar with each work. The energy and passion is something I haven't heard in other Bach interpretations - not on the piano at least. I will always remember seeing him in Berlin after a chance comp came my way. A precious memory. It was exactly this program, and just as amazing live.
What a phenomenon - beyond our understanding, but so be it - that our awareness, our understanding of Bach's music keeps evolving. I loved listening years ago to Rosalyn Tureck, then fell head over heels with Glenn Gould. Since I heard him in his New York Debut at the Grace Rainey Rogers auditorium, I have been amazed at every moment that Andras Schiff has shared with us his Bach, and the amazing part of all this is that his interpretations keep evolving. What we were grateful years ago, is even more of a gift today.
Listening to this great musician bringing us Bach is the deepest spiritual experience. Just try listening to the September 7th WTC from Royal Albert Hall. God bless you Andras.

I had never even heard of Andras Schiff before last week. I saw the video of him playing the English Suites, and now, the French Suites. He plays them from memory, in front of live audiences. He is perfect, almost like he is Bach making them up on the spot. - youtube is good for something. Saving these amaaaing performancds almost redeems them in my eyes.
I felt as if Bach himself was playing it. And the whisper of God. Wonderful ! I believe only people who experienced the sorrow and tragedy of life can understand the value of Maestro Bach.
I don't know how to play on any instrument. And even if I did, prodigies like him are very rare. But I thank God that I am able to sit and enjoy so much listening...
Nothing soothes my soul like Bach does.

To me, Bach is the most romantic composer. There is no other music as heavenly and spiritually uplifting as his. It's just so beautiful.
Bach hated being called a theoretician. "Music should speak to the heart most of all" were his words.
I agree, too.
That's odd since he did use alot of theory to make his works. Take his 14 canons based off of the goldberg variations for example. Lot of theory in that
cool muso I totally agree, he is romantic.
Bach and chopin the best romantic pianist and composer ive ever heard

I sometimes listen to Andras Shiff and Bach in my bed at night. Wonderful! Makes me calm and relaxed. Then my little black stray-cat jumps into the bed. And relaxes with me. I think she has a musical ear! :)
Sir András Schiff, absolutely one of the very best Bach pianists... I loved Gould, but Schiff is on par in his devotion!
I tried to listen to Gould after hearing this version. I couldn't get through it. By all respect, I felt that Gould was almost trying to take the music out of the music.
I've lost track how many times I've come to listen to this piece. I can't get enough of it, his rendition in particular. At least a couple of times a week I'm here. Actually I had to tone it down because it was playing in my head even at night so much so that I could not sleep soundly. I find I get lost in it's soothing rhythms, and always admire how anyone could write so much beautiful music.
you are a blessed soul
My favorite thing about Schiff is his ability to bring out the most beautiful moments with a little extra clarity or emphasis, showcasing the genius of the composer. The faster passages in this recording are so gorgeous.
WOW!! Schiff brings out the left hand voices with such clarity...I love Bach, and I love Andras Schiff
Today I had a bad day. It´s 11PM now and I´m drinking a glass of good scotch and listening to this piece through my Sansui G-801 and my JBL 4312C speakers in my room without lights. Nothing could be better to bring finally the needed joy to my soul. Thank you filjan44 for sharing this wonderful piece with us. I´m really grateful.
thanks for sharing. very interesting.
sounds a lot more atmospheric than me (i'm eating a bowl of cereal in bed and listening through my laptop speakers )
Again today, I listened to this piece in a bathtub with my MacBook. Two bottles of Guinness draught are gone, and Gustavo strongly urged to my mind to grab a shot of Belvene or MacCallan. It's 2 AM here in the Midwest.
Andras is a great conduit between Bach and all of us. No more miracles.
listening & writing this on my M-B - alas no tub ( and i don't think i'd dare ,,, there are no more 17 inchers around ... and the sound is really quite good !! ) i would give it to you , a few teaspoons of MacCallan could 'go a long way' , or some aged Black Bush , i often chose the triple distilled but so what -- its a choice performance here and fine recording too ... well , lets say , just a little better than my son's rendition ( 1st part of 812 ) - rushing off to his mates .
- inneresting conversation down , to Perry Weiner's comment , i'm also a afficionado for most of Gould's Bach interpretations , more than Schiff's , in general , but this one here i find absolutely excellent , or perhaps i'm just a bit 'under the weather' -? ( Dreary Days in Emsterdem .. ) maybe Gould's 'clockwork-tempo' was a little too much for me after my son's .... - letz say , he could have done better ..
Now wheres that bottle ?!?! - what does Sheldon have to say about that ? - a "warm beverage" - ????
can't stop this da... beautiful playing , its just too good - Big Bang 'll just have to wait , NO THYME before it anyway !!!!-?
I keep listening to this over and over .. I wish I could play like Andras Schiff … I never get tired of this performance... Each time I listen I lock myself in and, absorb each note as though it was giving me something.. Words cannot describe how I feel about the music and, Mr. Schiff.
It calms moved and transcends me all at the same time. Only the genius of Bach music can do this. It’s timeless and Schiff plays the way it should be played, airy and eloquent. Human language of the loftiest order.
One of the best live performances of J. S. Bach in existence, in my opinion.
I am so thoroughly enjoying Schiff's masterful approach to Bach. I know Glenn Gould was considered the master, but I just can't get past the groaning! Schiff is amazing to watch and a pleasure to hear. What serenity!
When I was young, I liked Gould with his craziness. Later in the time of love, I preferred Gavrilov with his sensitivity. Now, when I was close to death, I hear Schiff and its serenity.
Michael Arcadiev is also a beautiful modern pianist whose Bach can fascinate
Don't die!
peace and serenity- aaaah! thanks be to God
How old are you?
Understood: very well, in fact. But I still enjoy Gavrilov.
If one must choose between Schiff and Gould, I think Schiff wins: there is perfect consistency; there is unfailing obedience to the composer's text; there is no quirkiness in interpretation; there is no humming or other superfluous sound; and in their faces and body language, both of them are immersed in the beauty of the music. BUT with Gould, I feel egoism (preoccupation with self) but with Schiff I only sense respect and adoration for J.S. Bach himself, which I feel transcends, or blocks the presence of any egoism that may be there. I'm not talking about egotism, which involves an inflated sense of self-importance. I just feel Schiff giving only the composer's voice to his music, while Gould gives some of his own voice to it. Whether that matters depends on your point of view. With most composers from the baroque period onward, it seems to me to be an academic argument that will never be resolved, a matter of opinion. With Bach, I sense a precision and perfection in form and structure that requires me to defer completely to the composer. I am looking for one way to play it: my perception only of what Bach wants me to do, not what I WANT to do. So, as much as I revere Gould, Schiff is my reference against which all others are compared.

Interesting. I also find that I prefer Schiff, but not because I think he’s more of a strict interpreter: in fact, I sense a bit of a romantic involvement and a softer touch that I associate with a strong command of the material. I don’t think he’s doing anything but respecting the emotion that’s already in there.
With Gould I am in awe of Bach; but with Schiff I get closer emotionally to the music.
Why not enjoy both without comparison?
J. S. Bach was a master at contrapuntal composition of which this is a prime example and executed masterfully by Mr. Schiff! I find the integration of multiple melodies with catchy rhythms both intriguing and very pleasant listening!
I’m in full agreement with you
I used to be all about Gould, and I still think he is a genius interpreter of Bach. But Andras Schiff has taught me things about this music - which I thought I knew backward and forward - that has enriched my understanding. Brilliant. No day without Bach!
Gould is all about GOULD playing Bach,
Schiff is all about Schiff playing BACH.
That's why I prefer Schiff.
Rosalyn Tureck is one of my go-tos for Bach as is Angela Hewitt. I never tire of hearing Schiff. I was lucky to hear him live in San Francisco playing the French Suites. A true master.
Exactly my thought to 👍
From age 12 I began to learn classical music in the guitar. Listening to Bach was very inspiring. If I had to chose my favorite composer ever it would be Bach.
Matters of interpretation aside, Schiff has an incredible ability to play all lines of polyphony with clarity and character, he's a super genius badass

Just beautiful. Love his interpretation - which can only come with absolute mastery of the piece and total ease with the performance. To me he just seems to own the piece, even more that Gould. He performs with the same level of effort I use when I watch TV.

Pepe Vargas Memory is certainly one aspect, but more important is keeping the whole structure in mind as it emerges in the playing, while at the same time playing movingly in the present.

***** What do you mean by trivial?
I definitely feel the effects of that. When I first started listening to Bach I was lost because of the many notes. Bach is just a BOSS.
***** It is not hard at all to memorize the entire structure - your hands do this for yourself. The hardest part is to improve your technical skills (practice makes perfect). I've studied guitar and I noticed that practicing classical composers teaches your hands of the musical sense implied in any composition. Also the whole piece must be audible in your mind as if you put a record on. It's quite amusing experience indeed.

Mr. Schiff will go down in history as one of the leading interpreters of the music of JS Bach. How lucky we are to have these performances recorded and available for posterity. Can you imagine if this technology had existed between 1685 and 1750? Mr. Schiff's performance may well be the closest thing we see to a performance by the composer himself.
Except for Glenn Gould....;)
Yes indeed
I Believe even Bach would be surprised by nowadays interpretations....
You're really lying to yourself if you really think Gould's playing style would be anything like Bach's. It has character, to be sure, but has very little in common with what historians know about late Baroque performance practice.

The suites as they appear in manuscript are titled 'Suite pour le Clavecin,' (Harpsichord) not generically listed as for the "Clavier."
Although no original autograph by J S Bach exists, there were at least 10 manuscripts recognized by 1881, including the earliest examples found in both Notebooks for AM Bach. In the smaller 1722 note book contain the harpsichord suites. The first three are fragments of the pieces that are now known as the first three French Suites BWV 812-814. The next two are complete suites, French Suites Nos. 4 and 5, BWV 815-816. The minuets of suites 2 and 3 are separated from the rest of their respective suites and were most probably added at a later date by Anna Magdalena Bach (they are almost certainly in her hand), some time before 1725 In the larger 1725 note book, the D-minor and part of the C minor are titled for the Harpsichord in A. M. Bach.
Of the 8 manuscripts:
The manuscript which belonged to W F Bach was used by Peters to revised their text of the suites in 1844. J S Bach's student Heinrich Nicolaus Gerber's copy had a two different Eb major suite (as did W F Bach's copy) and a A minor suite (also, W F Bach's collection), several contain Preludes, alternate or additional dances and date from his time of his being a student with Bach in 1725. Gerber also studied (from his copies) the Inventions and Sinfonias, 4 of the "English Suites" (Gerber's copy contains the "Suite avec Anglais" written in an unknown handwriting, the beginning of the first book of the WTC, and some notes on thorough bass and reference to a missing seventh suite.
J. P. Kirnberger copies, a later Bach student, contain the six suites as are familiar today. One could call this definitive.
J S Bach continued through out his life to revise and perfect all his musical composition. In this sense, there never was a definitive manuscript or version, where J S Bach is concerned, everyone of his compositions, while he was alive, was considered a work in progress.
Which ever instrument these are played, the music is a joy.
!!! Wowed to know that the "accepted" versions we now hear might not be so consensual as we think... Was Mozart more concise and organized on his notes? I wonder what could these great composers do with new tools for supporting composition... They would have produced even more beautiful stuff :)
@@PSllva the Petrucci Online Library (IMSLP.org) has PDFs of a number versions a variants and also appendixes, well worth the time to hunt through. Although not an Urtext (editorial edition without editions) Hans Bischoff's edition (Kalmus) contains examples of variants through out the text, but this is not found at IMSLP.
The ability to notate a score, assign instruments for playback, and hear the works might increased production, but many composers can hear the music in their head (Beethoven), J S Bach wrote at a desk and had a low opinion of composers who had to use a keyboard and their fingers to write music, he called them, Knights at the keyboard, not a complimentary term.
@@Renshen1957 hey great tip! Didn't know this resource. Great stuff, thanks! Exploring...
@@PSllva Your welcome. TH-cam has a lot of great resources, AuthenticSound Channel, Early Music Sources, etc., Part of the the joy of the internet is networking with other individuals. Happy exploration...
It takes tremendous dedication and work to make this performance look so effortless. These pieces relax me and certainly help me unwind, especially in the evenings. I listen to them often. Andras Schiff performance is elegant and exquisite, as are these magnificent bach compositions.
I'm completely speechless how somebody is able to play this without sheets of notes. Here we hear the God of ancient music played by a god of this century...
ISTEN csak egy van, az ÖRÖKKÉVALÓ. Mielőtt Bach komponáláshoz kezdett, az üres papír tetejére felírta, hogy "Egyedül ISTENé a dicsőség."
Schiff is the most generous, magnificent, loving,, interpreter of Bach I've ever come across. Such genius, such gentletness. His interpretations have been part of my life ever since I've listened to them at first. Thank you Schiff, and of course.... thank you Bach.
Me too.
My sentiments exactly. GG has a less emotional but equally beautiful style. Sometimes, I think, GG’s slower tempi and more computer-like evenness of sound serve the pieces better, but then at other times the two pianists switch the other way. I love them both. As for Lang Lang, well, he should stay safely away from Bach and stick to Liszt, Chopin and the great Russian composers, where he excels, if he values his reputation!
Also Polina
How precisely are they generous? I find them sometimes insightful, sometimes tedious.
I met him in a coffee shop in San Francisco one morning many years ago. I recognized him as he was giving a concert that evening at the symphony hall and I said “Hello”. Aren’t you the pianist, Andreas Schiff?” He was sipping an espresso and he smiled warmly and he seemed pleased to be recognized. He was very gracious. I said I looked forward to his concert that evening. He played all Beethoven that evening and it was wonderful.
He is a genius - how can he remember all this! Phenomenal !! Bravo !! Thank you.
At work and realized that I've already listened to this twice. Such exquisite
music and I love it! Makes the day so much brighter.
I used to like rap music, but then, i listened to this REAL music, and I realize i know nothing of music, this is truly beautiful.
+Theodore Graham dear, rap is real music as well. You can't compare bach with it because they were made in different times, and for a different public.
+Rafael Ilheo Who to say one is better than the other. However the vibrational frequency of classical music - or that which incorporates the principals of math, are much higher than any other music form.
+Rafael Ilheo only the dumb are intrigued by the drum...
+bittenheroz Without the drum or percussion instruments there is no music!!! do your research
+Theodore Graham I hope you still like rap music too. I feel you have just enriched your life a bit more by listening and appreciating this music. There is so much more great music and art out there to enrich your life. Don't close yourself off as you will limit yourself and never get to experience the true potential and understanding that comes from allowing yourself many experiences. It's all related there is only but one source; that which makes us all human.
On Google Videos, before I knew it would be turned off, I saw a television recording of the G Maj ste. gigue (1:03:42) with Z. Ruzickova on harpsichord. Similar playing! How I wish to find it.
Very awesome piece! Thanks to Mr. Schiff for this soul-elevating music. Bless you a million fold.
¡Saludos! Desde México.
Fantastic! What a talented musician Andras is.
Ladies and gentlemen, I love classical music a great deal and have a deep appreciation for all the immortal beloved composers..I'm unable to pull away nor do I want to from the wonderful gravitational orbit of the mighty BACH ...I'm always listening to this awesome music..we are blessed in more ways than one to have the pleasure and luxury to enjoy all this with the magic of modern day technology...JS bach is a musical phenomenon for ever...the music compels us in a very positive and satisfying way to come back for more...mr.Bach you are the composers composer ❤.
I guess musicians move to a deep trance to play music, without partitures, for more than 1 hour, without any mistake. Simply amazing!
the fact that this video has more than 5 million views perhaps suggests that there might be some hope for humanity - although I suspect that many others, like me, return to this again and again - rather than being new to Schiff's sublime interpretation of this piece
Ja wracam często❤
I will always be a great fan of Gould, but Schiff is also an accomplished master of the instrument and a world-class interpreter. In my opinion, criticisms that his realization in this recording is diminished by romantic influences are totally irrelevant. (I don't happen to think this performance is "romantic" in any way.) Bach's compositions are resilient and are still able to stand on their own regardless of their interpretation or whether or not the interpretation exhibits every stylistic stricture on the performer that dogmatic academicians may insist upon in the name of authenticity. I appreciate Schiff's interpretation. It need not be identical to that of any other interpreter, ( if that were really possible. ) Bach's works are evidence of his genius and mastery of melody, harmony, and counterpoint. It is possible to appreciate the delicate yet powerful weaving of multiple voices into a satisfying harmonic whole that is so characteristic of Bach, even if performed on a Calliope. But Schiff's performance is rock solid and authentic, musically, as any that is performed on a modern piano.
+etrucker801 There are those that think Bach should never be romanticized in any way. Others think there should never be interpretation or expression injected into his playing at all. Others think performing on anything other than a harpsichord is blasphemy. That's the beauty of Bach - he's dead so he doesn't care, but if he were here I believe he'd say play it any way you want. Use it to put your soul on a display for all to hear. It's music.
+John Aldana A person like Bach always had to be learning, I agree, he would say, "Play it the way you want" and listen to see he could find a new idea.
To be specific, this interpretation does use some romantic typical technics, like rubato, a fair amount of pedal, or slightly delaying the right hand compared to the left, so those criticisms are not totally irrelevant as you say. You can only disagree with the idea that one shouldn't use those in Bach, which is a wide debate.
From Bach's miraculous brain, to the remarkable intelligence of Schiff (no one has thought longer or harder about Bach's music, or played it with greater brilliance), to my own paltry three pounds of oatmeal mush of a brain--no match for Bach or Schiff, but still able to love this beautiful music. And now I ease my children into listening to it, and they will, years from now, I hope, have theirs listen...and so it goes.
His play makes me feel something I cannot tell what it is. something awesome.
Despite his stylistic diversity, Bach was above all a composer of expressionist aesthetics, always close to drama, depth, angst and the deep and tormented view of life which seems to emanate from the metaphysics of man. as of its same deep nature. Thank you for discovering this wonderful pianist, Andras Schiff
