      Hey Casey, on the Z9 and Z8 you can switch video banks by holding a custom button down and the moving to the left and right.
      The actual setting is “Shooting menu bank”.
      I sent mine to custom function button 3 and the shutter speed dial is used.
      This allows you to cycle between four different modes.
      NRAW is great. It’s better than H265.
      NRAW can be used with SDR and NLOG and HDR.
      Z6iii has animal eye AF for video. 🙃

    At the risk of stating the obvious, the Z6iii is perfect for you. It has enough of what you need to do what you do, while also having enough glaring deficiencies to keep your channel alive with complaints. If you got everything you wanted, you’d be out of business. You must pre-order ASAP. And of course look for nice used 58/1.4G and 28/1.4E lenses so you can show what else is missing from the Z line.

    • @garfieldirwin
      @garfieldirwin 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Interesting comment. I've preordered the Z6III for my wildlife videography hobby, and have always wanted to try shooting wildflower stills with the 58/1.4 -- that would be a neat combo, I think.

    • @LTPottenger
      @LTPottenger 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can never become perfect because of the many many camera use cases, so I don't think he will find perfection any time soon. Especially for stab and slowmo which are both kinda niche and also very hard technically.

    • @94Ninsound94
      @94Ninsound94 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      His perfect camera will be the A7S IV. He needs a low resolution camera with very fast readout speed for his very specific use case like ultra slow motion at 1080p (480fps) and 4k (240fps).
      Who am I kidding, a FF doing that would be in the range of some m4/3 cameras that is half of the sensor size.
      It requires an incredible amount of speed to cover twice that, and probably a lot of processing power to handle meaning also a lot of heat to dissipate.
      Hope he finds happiness some day 🥹

    Hey, you got Gerald's statement on Z6iii dynamic range wrong. The dynamic range has nothing to do with stacked or unstacked sensor. It's just the balance between sensor readout speed and minute loss in SNR due to sensor heat while processing lot's of data in high frame rate, specially at higher ISO or underexposed shots where the blacks are near crushed. Nikon's RAW is based on Tico RAW which is not very different from Cinema DNG as it's just lossless compressed in a 12bit container instead of individual DNG frames.
    The reason why Gerald's test showed low Dynamic Range is that Nikon is not agressively tonemapping/encoding the RGB RAW data with it's N-Log hence less stops are reported when doing the DR test. All the data is still there in the footage which can be recovered by sliding the exposure sliders or doing tonemapping with curves as per your need.
    Also RAW has no Noise Reduction applied so the blacks are noisy and mostly crushed thanks to N-LOG which doesn't agressively aim for maximum dynamic range.
    But you can easily recover lot's of data from highlights and shadows which will make the effective Dynamic range better than any APS-C camera or even approaching A7siii if we get a perfect noise profile from Nikon to apply best Noise Reduction to NRAW.

      Gerald showed in his video that with noise reduction applied to NRAW, the DR is in line with A7SIII output. And these are the trade offs between speed, cost, and ultimate image fidelity. Overall, for those like me who have shot stills on Nikon for years but have tended to use other brands for video (in my case Blackmagic), the Z6III is a huge step up and will likely see me selling the BMCC cameras I use. In the process I will loose some open gate cropping flexibility, and balanced audio which is easy to work around, but other than that Nikon blows the no IBIS, no autofocus, no ProRes cameras out of the water.

    • @MTBD80
      @MTBD80 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@waveland Gerald actually states in his DR conclusion that dynamic is fine and inline with other cameras. Unfortunately I can see how his DR section can be perceived with negative result which it isn't. It looks good in the PetaPixel video where they were using high dynamic range settings.

  • @ProT3ch
    @ProT3ch 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

    The A7S3 has a 48MP Quad Bayer sensor. That means that every 4 pixel is grouped together and has the same color filter. So while it has 48MP worth of pixels it only has 12MP worth of color data. This is commonly used in phones, with all those 50MP sensors, that only output 12.5MP images.

    With the Z8 you can switch to a specified custom bank with the push of a button or you can set it up to cycle it. You would hold the FN button and use the shutter speed dial to switch banks. It's also got another function called settings recall mode. It's basically a full config you can set to recall when holding a button or taping a button whichever you prefer. So basically you could set it up so if you held the FN button and hit record it would record 4k120 or if you just hit record it could record 6k60 or something.

    Well I’m cross checking specs and prices on MPB and they don’t have a used A7SIII for less than $2700.00. Or I could buy a new Z6III for $200 less and have a true hybrid capable of superb stills and capable of class-leading internal RAW video recording. Where the Z6III sits in terms of usable DR seems unclear to me because Sony automatically applies noise reduction and Mr. Undone’s initial test does not. Yet for the price, Nikon have rolled out a very competitive mid-range camera. As for the dial ergonomics, yup, not ideal especially since I almost never look at the top screen.

    a stacked sensor is great, because it is FAST. A global shutter is even faster but tends to have less DR.

For my use for some projects it will be pretty good (I can grade easily so shooting Braw film log is not an issue). I’ve been having the Nikon zf in my bh basket for months and wondering about a z6iii. I don’t know if I’ll jump to a new Nikon z for z6iii. Then again my use case is not yours and not like other people. My BM will run vintage lenses or modern Lensbaby or lomography recreation on 200 year old lenses outside in uncontrolled lighting. My Nikon z30 as a fun knock about still video camera but I want a zf or z6iii for full frame af or use my Lensbaby lomography lenses and have the flip screen for shooting at ground level. High frame rate is a bonus, the BM HF is underwealming for 6k open gate. Anyway hoping I shoot something with my BM 6k mount before I buy yet another camera that I don’t have time to use. If I were in the market today (I should be because I have an X-H2S) I would strongly consider investing in the Nikon Z6iii. While the Z6iii is not everything we want, there is an argument to be made that the investment in glass is more than the body. That investment in glass may pay off as we begin to see more influence of Red showing up in bodies over the next several years. The only reason I have not pulled the trigger is because of uncertainty of video autofocus with respect to birds. And there is no bird subject detect on the Z6iii. I watched Jan Wegener’s video on the Z6iii. His comment was that the Z6iii autofocus was close but not as good as the Z8. Also, I had concerns about the necessity of having to switch between autofocus detection methods of AutoArea AF, 3D AF, Spot AF. This seems cumbersome. I need more information on how this works in practice.

    I’ve been tossing this decision around too. Have an older D7100 I use for wildlife photography/scenery etc. but want to get something good for both photo and video. Don’t have many Nikon lenses now but like the brand. Not enraptured with A7iv or R6ii. Was about to go for Panasonic S5ii as it is probably the best deal here in Canada. For $3.0 you get camera and two kit lenses (20-60 and 50mm 1.8).
    Z6iii will be $3400.00 body only or $4100.00 with 24-70 f4 kit. But I waited to see what Z6iii would have and cost. So quite a bit more than S5ii although admittedly probably a much more capable camera. Also the choice of long telephotos is Nikons strength. Not many choices for S5ii in that regard.

    So maybe one issue with a “hybrid” camera is you’re paying a lot for something that does 2 things well, but if you’re only interested in just taking photos or just taking videos, there are more affordable options that can do either one as well. I’m more interested in photography, so I feel like I would be paying for a lot of video features I won’t use in a Z6III.

My question is, (trying to kill two birds with one stone here) would a 90mm work out for macro and some hang out in the woods type videoes where I'm explaining things like you do? Or do you have another lense preference that might work better for the same purposes. I'm using autofocus and autoframing. Also a pro tip. Don not use an 11mm for alligator portraits.

    The Custom Banks on Z8/Z9 are accessible by holding a button and scrolling any of the wheels. They will hold most settings that you want them too like resolution, frame rate, shutter speed but can go even as deep as holding different custom buttons layouts.
    The Quad Bayer in Sony instead of having a Green, Red, Blue, Blue colour filter would have four pixels for each colour. It’s not the best setup for resolving theoretical full resolution as debayering of such image is prone to produce artefacts. Camera like A7SIII will group every 4 pixels and treat them as one but at the same time while resolving the image half of the pixels can expose for shadowed while the other half expose for highlight. It’s called Dual Gain Conversion. This is why A7IV has a great dynamic range.
    As for the N-Log LUT it’s not the best. I’d recommend using either a lut from Gamut or simply use the Color Space Transfrom. Both will give you very good and very similar results. The official log pushes the highlights too much imho

    10:44 - I found a Panasonic camera while dumpster diving yesterday, it said GH5 II on it. You can assign your favorite video modes to a "My List" (such as 4K60, 4K24, FHD120 VFR) then assign "My List" to say the left arrow of the scroll wheel. To switch from 4K60 to 4K24, you just tap left on the scroll wheel, turn the dial one click then confirm with the center set button on the scroll wheel. Then hit the record button. When using Shutter Priority, Shutter Angle and Auto Exposure Lock, this frame rate change will maintain consistent / same motion blur amount and your manually set exposure (via EV) by adjusting aperture first, then ISO if needed (immediately and automatically). Along with AEL, white balance settings and framing outline along with all other settings are carried over, unlike with custom mode dials generally. Only scrubs use a custom mode dial for frame rate changes, but I understand you are used to Fuji, Sony and now Nikon which are photography first, video second.

    • @cameraconspiracies
      @cameraconspiracies  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So you have to press a button, turn a wheel, then confirm with another button? How are you bragging about that? lol... It's so much worse than just spinning the custom dial.

    • @BackusCreativeImaging
      @BackusCreativeImaging 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@cameraconspiracies It takes about 1 second, I just timed it. To change from the top item to the bottom item in 'My List" (the most complex it gets) such as a higher frame rate I just press the left arrow of the dial, rotate the dial a half a turn which guarantees I'm at the bottom of the list (it won't cycle to the top ... on custom mode dials you'd "overshoot" in this case), then hit set; it all takes 1 second to maybe 1.2 seconds at the most if you're being slow. This is more ergonomic than having to use two fingers to turn a custom mode dial; while you can use one finger, at least on the older Panasonic cameras, two fingers is better because the dial is stiff. Can you change your frame rate one with just 1 finger and without moving your other fingers from the EV dial or any other buttons? Probably not.

    • @cameraconspiracies
      @cameraconspiracies  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BackusCreativeImaging Point is, why are you acting superior for using this method? They are both very similar lol.

    • @BackusCreativeImaging
      @BackusCreativeImaging 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@cameraconspiracies You've tried many camera brands, so you'd know this, but generally a custom mode mapped to a dial saves more than just the frame rate change. It'll save your set audio levels, and framing guide outline for example. I'll shoot in say 16:9 and use the 2.35 framing outline for guidance in my target 2.35 final aspect ratio which is ideal for watching TH-cam on phones in landscape mode (if that's what I'm going for). By switching frame rates in less than a second with my method (the same amount of time to switch a custom mode dial setting), I'm able to retain all other settings and only adjust the frame rate (the desired goal). My method is therefore objectively superior to the custom mode dial method. Not only that, but put a blindfold on. I'll turn your custom mode dial to a random position. Now, set your camera to say 4K60 without looking at it; you can't because generally that mode dial continually rotates. With my method and just 3 options in "My List" (say 4K60 at the top, 4K24 in the middle as the base and 1080p120 at the bottom), I can rapidly change to any other option with 1 finger, it can be done when I'm walking even if I don't remember where my last frame rate was set ... the menu does not cycle so I can solve the blindfold problem I presented above to you and can switch to say 4K60 (no matter where I am at) by pressing the left arrow, rotating the dial counter clockwise more than 1 click (I won't count) then press set. 1 second operation and I know absolutely that I'm in 4K60. The method works best when you have up to 3 desired frame rates in your "My List"; you can rapidly change to any of the other two frame rates by just slightly moving your thumb (1 finger instead of typically 2 when changing a custom mode) without looking at the camera nor even remembering what frame rate you're changing from. This method is objectively superior for 90% of use cases over a "custom mode" dial being used as an improvised way to change your frame rate because you don't need to remember what frame rate you were at to set your new frame rate (you don't need to look at the camera) and it doesn't affect any other settings aside from changing the frame rate (like a custom mode dial generally would).

    • @DiversionScience
      @DiversionScience 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's actually doing it the hard way on the GH5II. You can just set the Quick Menu to use the "My List" for the video modes. Then you just press the Quick Menu button and turn the back dial(or front dial first if you weren't in the video modes list) and then press shutter/record, no confirmation needed.
      Also, you can't assign a VFR framerate to that list, it's a completely separate function that needs another custom button or the menu to set the fps.

    As for the custom mapping, my best suggestion is look for a youtube video from a wildlife shooter on that subject. I had my Z6 very well mapped and never had to touch that dial while shooting birds, and yes everything could be done on the fly. Nikon more than any other company I have personally used excels at letting you map just about anything to any button or dial, or combo. Sorry I have been without a Z6 for nearly 2 years, and My Z50 is not so versatile with it's mapping. It along with the Z6 do allow you to custom map peaking though so though not ideal, you can switch between focus peaking and highlights. Z9 and I believe Z8 do give you both at the same time if memory serves me. For some of the basic mapping Maarten Heilbron is always good to watch and one of the best youtubers in existence. He has a video titled "Nikon Z6 Best Video Settings" Though He details allot of the basic stuff, there are hidden gems of info within which will also apply to the Z6iii.

As for lenses, seriously consider trying the pf 500mm or the the 180-600mm Z first. See if you like the camera, then think about the upgrade. The 100-400mm z or 400mm 4.5mm are also viable options and both those lenses are phenomenal and light weight (as is the pf 500mm). plus you have the crops. The NRAW in the Nikon Z6 III is actually 14bit, and NRAW is a compressed version of their photographic NEF files.
    Hard truth is that stacked sensors sacrifice dynamic range and colour depth for better speed, its all about bandwidth.
    Considering you like 3D Pop so much you be shocked to hear that the sensor actually plays a big role in achieving those micro contrasts in colour, stacked sensor is the opposite of what you want because their colour depth is atrocious I mean DxO can show you this, Photons to Photo can show it. Its just terrible, thats why older sensors seems to do better separation and micro contrasts, they just had superior colour depth to modern sensors but the downside to more dynamic range and more colour depth is noisier sensor and of course it outputs more bandwidth which requires more processing power which outputs heat and so on and so forth.
    I am kinda shocked you still have not bought the Sigma MC-11 and tested it out, it be more fun to test that adapter with a Canon 500mm F4 or the 600mm F4, those are magic lenses. But they also weight the same as a dump truck.

      "Stacked sensors indeed prioritise bandwidth and speed, making them ideal for applications requiring fast data processing, such as high-speed photography and videography. However, the trade-offs in dynamic range and color depth are being continuously addressed through technological advancements. While some compromises may still exist, the overall trend in stacked sensor development is towards achieving a balance that offers high speed without significantly sacrificing image quality."
