    I'm very impressed with how Nikon has evolved over the years. They are REALLY delivering quality improvements with each new camera body. Only thing I can see missing from the Z6iii is no full sensor open gate mode for anamorphic 1.5x and 1.6x lenses. I hope they'll add this in a future firmware update.

    You've done something in this video I've not seen ANYONE else do anywhere... and that's use a feature of the product you're reviewing as part of your sponsor "commercial"--in this case the line audio capability of the camera. That's brilliant, and you should market to your sponsors this unique and creative approach. Typically I skip past the sponsorship schpeal and get back to the video, but because you were in demonstration mode of the audio, I was compelled to listen to you talk about the sponsor...just brilliant!

      If that original Z6 wasn't used for video and there is no big need to improve af performance or fps (and whoever needs this either already has the Z8 or did buy Sony at some point in the past), I'd wait to see whether a Z5ii launched in the mid future. As the Z6iii focuses on speed (and isn't an entry camera pricewise at 2,999€ in Germany), I'd expect two foto-centric bodies next: A Z7iii with a gazillion megapixels and a full frame entry-level camera for the system: The Z5ii with decent af but apart from that entry level specs.

    I'm coming from the Sony camp and I want Nikon to light the world on fire!!! I love competition so when people ask me what brand to use I tell them to rent a body to kick the tires to see what brand will YOU feel comfortable with. I remind them that you're really investing in the glass so choose carefully and I then tell them to get out there and make it happen by producing great images and/or videos!!! My photography circle of friends use Nikon, Canon, Sony, Panasonic and Fuji and all they're all able to produce great work from their tools. Kudos to Nikon and I hope that camera will turn the photography world upside down as did the Canon 5D Mark II when it hit the market or when Sony brought the game changing eye focus and who can forget the Nikon 850 or the Canon 1DX!!! Just my two cents.

    Seems Nikon is the only full frame camera maker that isn't clearly kneecapping their lower end bodies to protect the higher end.
    This is the way it should be. Newer, lower end cameras SHOULD be better than older high end cameras.

    • @TechnoBabble
      @TechnoBabble 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@oatsgoats39 New tech costs a lot in R&D, they need to make their money back on anything they develop.
      They can't use brand new stuff and then sell it in a low end body for cheap. That should just be obvious.
      What I'm referencing are examples like Sony LOWERING the framerate on their new cameras to try and push people towards the A9 and A1 if they need any kind of speed, despite the increasing amount of processing power and faster storage solutions. For example: A7R III did 10fps uncompressed RAW, the A7R IV does 7fps. The A7 III did 10fps uncompressed RAW, the A7 IV does 6fps.
      Then you have Canon: The R6 II absolutely should have been able to do 4k120 with binning/line skipping/cropping, but then nobody would have a reason to buy the R5 for video other than 8k. And speaking of that; the readout speed of the R6 II sensor would also have allowed it to record full width 6k video (even open gate 6k, actually), but then the R5's resolution advantage would be severely diminished.
      Panasonic doesn't limit their stuff as much, but they don't release cameras nearly as often.

      Your world is about changed forever. The OG Z6 was substanially better to operate than the D750. This coming from someone who shot 100 weddings on the D750 from 2015-2018. 2019 got the Z6. Downgraded to the Z5 for SD card slot convenience. Just shot a Z8 as main body this weekend for a wedding, 3D tracking is mindblowingly good. I was barely thinking about focus throughout the day. Hopefully this novel sensor format doesn't develop novel issues over time. Seems like high shutter speed there is novel banding issues that aren't in other fully stacked configurations.

The Burano for example showed a bit average DR, but in the latitude test, it was comparable to the orriginal Arri Alexa at 10 lattitude stops. While most sonys stopped at eight, the Z9 surprisingly 8.5-9 and the likes of RED raptor at 9+. For moving shots, use "sports-mode" VR. "Normal" will try to fixate your shot rather firmly and make big jumps when out of bounds. "Sport-mode" should help with that.

    I like that it has a Pre-Buffer in photo mode. Its nice to see you can have a 24MP sensor and still get a readout under 10ms without overheating. That makes me look forward to the Sony a7s IV / FX3 MKII

    Why fast read out will cause hit on dynamic range?

    • @andrewrice9383
      @andrewrice9383 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I looked at the design a little bit, it’s a partially stacked CMOS sensor, so it might be that a little bit of light efficiency is lost, meaning that the effective dynamic range is slightly reduced. So my guess is the pixels are slightly less sensitive due to the partially stacked design where most likely the data processing circuitry is blocking a little bit of the light. I can’t know for sure though I’m just guessing.

    I dont know if I compare it right but the DR seems to be even lower than A6700 which is APSC camera? The A6700 at ISO 800 Low = 12.4 / Med = 11.2 / Med-high = 10.1 / High = 8.57

    I've basically sworn off the official Nikon LUT for working with N-log off my Z9. I'm always left with footage that looks completely blown out even when exposed "correctly" via the histogram and false-color on the Ninja. CSTs are the way to go.

    Hello Gerald! I'm not shooting video often so I'm quite an amateur when it comes to it, but I really enjoy your camera reviews.
    I have one question, if you don't mind. Of all the drawbacks that the Nikon Z6III has, and you did mention a couole of them, how many could be fixed with a firmware update? Clearly, hardware limitations aren't fixable, but most of its "faults" you mentioned don't sound like a hardware issue. Or am I wrong?
    Loved the video! Best of luck in the future!

Can you do a video on how the proposed ban on DJI products affects not just drones but all DJI products, and also talk about Skydios involvement on this legislation? I know it won't be immediate or affect the current products, but it will affect our industry significantly in the near future.

  • @truthkeeperfilms

    Just remember folks, the A7IV got 12.6 stops and A7S III got 12.8 stops, while the Z6 III gets 12.5 stops DR after using a better log and NR in post. It looks like there is more flexibility in post vs NR in camera like the Sony or Canons. BUT, I returned my Z6 III due to significant color shifts and flickering. On paper, the Z6 III is unbeatable. In reality, those issues made it unusable. Hopefully Nikon fixes it, but almost 2 months they haven't said a thing. You can see the color shift/flickering in Gerald's video 7:20 as he scrolls through 1600-3200-5000 ISO.

Even with the older version of their LUTs they massively underexposed compared to ETTR, so the sensor itself should be capable of giving quite clean shadows once you have the right LUT to compensate ;) Cheers!

    When I first saw the headline specs I was tempted to buy the Z6 III. I've been wanting to see a 6k full frame camera with a fast sensor, great video features and an affordable price on the market for a couple of years now. However, there's still several significant cons here (lowish DR, no redundant recording, no open gate, mediocre IBIS etc.) that will keep me from leaving my beloved Panasonic S1. If Panasonic made a fusion of the Z6 III and the S5 II I'd be sold.
