Last week ,one of the buildings on the property I work at had a recycle bin setup for electronics. scored 2 Elitebook 8470p laptops ,memory and hard drives missing. A Dell Inspiron 530s fully functional, A HP Compaq 8510p laptop fully functional. I happen to have a power adapter that would work for the Elitebooks,and I have memory and 2.5 drives on hand. I installed drives and memory to both Elitebooks (Core i5) and they worked. I had to erase all the programs and pictures left on the Dell Inspiron (windows 7). I did the same with the HP 8510p (windows XP).

I must've either gotten lucky with mine or the person I bought it from (for around $180) already upgraded it. My 8470p has a i7-3520m processor with 2.90 GHz

Is there a way to remove the tall standoffs in the wifi slot area? I have a m2 to mini pcie adaptor but it will not fix the tall standoffs in the way.
That's easy. What's important is running the PC. Installing transfer of data. That's important.

Thank you for the voiceover. I just bought a refurbished Elitebook 8470p. The Windows system startup message tells me that the cooling fan is not working. I have been using a gaming fan system to control the temperature and Piriform Pro software to monitor the temperature. I just want to remove that back cover and check to see whether the fan is connected properly. Most of the videos that I have watched have no sound and fingers are in the way. The one with sound had pretty music that was much too loud and distracting, and a bad demonstration.

That's a good question. Sometimes those wifi cards are run over pcie bus which may seem like it would work. However, it also depends on BIOS support on top of that. I'm guessing it will not work as I no longer have the laptop to double check... but interesting idea.

Not possible. You can install a better CPU which comes with slightly better video processing but.... it's very minor... so not worth it.

can u also show how to connect 2 monitors with 8460p? 2 separate monitors and extended display on all 3 screens...? i have tried a lot of thing but I am able to obtain display on 1 monitors so far, as per the manual (also read in some blog post) that up to 4 monitors can be attached to 8460p but nobody seems to know how.... can u like make an extended video.... thanks in advance

Normally, you can mix different sizes of RAM 4+8 but in this case I could not find a single 8gb that I can recommend. If you only have 4gb it's best to add at least another 4gb stick like this: amzn.to/2TLTMX7

Hi cobuman! On my elitebook 8440p I am replacing the CPU, but it has this black plastic film square. Seems to be some type of thermal paste shield, but mine is all crinkly after removing the old cpu. Do I need to have this or can i do without?
I would just make sure new thermal paste is installed.

Thank you. This computer is using Windows 7, but you can run Windows 10 on it, no problem. I would recommend installing an SSD to make it a lot faster. :)

It's more difficult on HP laptops... on Desktop for example you would just pull this jumper pin, but in laptops I think you have to get an unlock file from HP that you put on a USB drive.

Hello, I have "Hp elitebook 8470p" but the higher model these are the specs:
1) 8GB of ddr3 ram
2) i7 3520m @ 2.9ghz
3) Intel Integrated HD 4000 Dx 11
4) 256GB of storage
So basically I was wondering if the components of my laptop can be put inside of a PC case so that I can internally insert a GTX 1050 in it please reply.

@@Cobuman I just added 16 gigs of ram, next is an ssd hard drive that came in the mail today. Maybe that i7 if I need it too.
If i just upgraded the ram to a 16g would it be able to run unity for making games my 11 year old has been making small games the last computer was. not good enough to continue. Or would I need to do the ssd card also I don't want to blow allot on upgrading one computer when i could just pay a little more for one that will work as is
Well, there is no dedicated GPU so it may not be best for Unity or games in general.

I have a problem with hp elite 8470 I want to reset it like factory data reset on my computer to completely make it a look like a fresh new one but I am having a trouble resetting it watched many videos on TH-cam and I have also tried 'pressing esc bottom as soon as I start my computer that takes me to a different setting page, there is a option for reset/ factory reset and I tried doing that but failed' & since you were very helpful for me the last time I was hopping you may have some idea/ or suggestions for me like why it's not working for me and what else I can try to make it reset by erasing everything that on it setting,and all

Hello, you can try to install a fresh copy of Windows on it... This would be a clean install without any other software installed. If interested, I have a video on how to install Windows 10. *Keep in mind this will delete all of your data* if you do it. th-cam.com/video/4wKitW_Cn4E/w-d-xo.html
Microsoft offers several choices if Windows isn't operating correctly or is extremely slow, or you want to simply start back with a clean fresh version of Windows 10. Check here for the steps involved.... support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12415/windows-10-recovery-options

Trying using one RAM stick at a time to see if one is faulty. Also, try different installation order (switch them out). I hope that helps.

It sounds like one of the RAM sticks is bad or not compatible. Are you able to return it for refund?

It does not have a slot msata; unless removing wifi card allows for it which I'm not sure about.

Sure thing. I think it would be fine as long installation is done correctly.

I don't think there is a limit by today's standards. So, if you wanted to put in 1TB hard drive or larger... it should work fine. Good question.

What about the cpu? They are so easy and accessible in these computers,its almost a shame not to include it. A quad core i7 is a huge improvement over the i5,even though the i5 is respectable

What's the difference between elitebook8440p, 8470p
8470p has a better CPU, way longer battery life, more RAM, more HD space and etc...
Also, note that although similar to 8470p the 8440p is a bit different when it comes to upgrading it.

Thanks. With this laptop I would also upgrade to SSD storage which can make a big difference.
You can edit videos but make sure you upgrade RAM and to SSD; otherwise it will be slow. Encoding may take a while if you are working with anything bigger than 1080p 30fps video.
Gaming would work on low settings for old games only; nothing new would work properly. I hope that helps. Good luck.

Excellent question. Yes you can. First you remove the system fan and then there are few more screws that hold the cooling plate (heatsink).
Thx just one question, i've read online that you cant use a the HP mainboard, which previously had an dualcore, with a i7 quadcore. Is that right?

Is the TDP limited to 35W or can I use an i7 with 45W?
As far as I know it should support the i7 of the same socket; this is with assumption that Bios supports it as well.

Usually, when system would say "usable" amount means after part of RAM is dedicated to onboard GPU (intel or amd). However, this should not be the case in your situation. It may mean that 3.89 is available after background processes/applications are using already (check task manager processes to see which apps may be using it the other 4gb). Another cause could be bad RAM.
Or you ha e a 32bit is, as it only allows access to 4gb ram
