    Thanks for the video!
    Just installed i7-3740QM in a HP EliteBook 8470p.
    Super easy upgrade, I didn't even have to change BIOS settings or anything.
    Linux Mint simply picked up where I left off, and the laptop booted up so fast I first though the laptop was in sleep mode (not possible, since I unplugged the battery).
    The laptop already felt very snappy since I have replaced old mechanical drive with SSD and then upgraded RAM to 8GB. But now with CPU power doubled (according to benchmarks), this old machine received a new lease of life.

The cpu heat-sink needed a real good cleaning for sure, but he also should have cleaned the cpu and applied fresh thermal paste to the cpu before putting it back together. For those trying to upgrade. Based on the documentation, the best CPU you can put into an HP 8460p is Intel Core i7-2860QM (4C/8T).
    I've managed to use it on my 8460p, together with an SSD (old HDD caddied) and 16GB of RAM.
    My laptop kicks the butt of up to 7th Gen i3s and i5s and even some i7s.

There is a bios update you should research and read about that made the extra cores possible, without it none will work.

    8470p runs around 100 $ on ebay. A new (used) processor will also cost you around 100 $ from eBay or Aliexpress. For 200 $ you can buy a new laptop with better specification. Add another 100 $ for 16 GB of RAM and than you arrived at 300 USD.
    No question the upgrade is doable, but is it worth it?

    • @Cobuman
      @Cobuman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. First of all, make sure you get the a compatible CPU for your model. For example, 8470p has a Mobile Intel® QM77 Express Chipset which is different from 8460p... The 10w difference just means you will use more power and it can create a bit more heat; however, the motherboard is designed to handle it. To be safe, google your laptop model and see what the best i7 came with shipped laptop that will ensure compatibility.

      The main concern is BIOS support; however, I've had someone reply that it worked for them (using non-standard CPU) on this specific video in comments. It may work but I can only recommend what was originally sold as an option. If you go for it reuse the heatsink as there is no upgrade available. TDP refers to more power/heat compared to 35w as you know, so I would test the temps afterwards to be in safe range.
