  • Guide to upgrading or replacing the DDR4 RAM Memory in the HP 250/255 G7 laptop.
This is a fairly easy task to complete, requiring just a small Philips head screwdriver and plastic pry tool.
The laptops takes DDR4-2666 modules, such as these: amzn.to/2HgPqSA

Not mentioned as the model I was working on didn't have an optical drive.
If yours does then you'll have to slide it out after removing the base screws and check for any underneath it along the edge of the chassis.

Memory is supposed to be one of the easiest components ever to replace. HP should have made this a LOT easier.. Thats insane!!! No one wants to remove the entire bottom panel of a laptop to add memory

I agree. That thing is pointlessly difficult. My Acer Aspire 7 has two user accessible bays; one for RAM and one for the hard drive. A single Phillips head screw each and you're in. Took me 5 minutes to double the RAM (and memory bandwidth) and swap the HDD out for an SSD.

Hello, I have the NOTEBOOK HP 250 G7 153B9LT 15.6 / I5-1035G1 / 4 / 1TB / DOS. And I want to add 8gb of RAM to it. That is, it already has 4gb to DDR4-2666 and I want to add another 8gb DDR4-2666 module, in total 12gb. The technical question is the following:
    Is this 12gb combination (4gb DDR4-2666 + 8gb DDR4-2666) going to work at the speed of 2666 or 2400?
Because someone told me that this configuration of 4 + 8 in this notebook works at 2400 but if I put 8 + 8 it works at 2600.
    Could you confirm how fast the 4gb 2666 + 8gb 2666 combination works? 2666 or 2400?
Thank you, I await your reply.

Hi there! I was just on the HP support site (Feb 2023), and this is what they recommend: "HP recommends purchasing the same type of memory (same size, speed, and manufacturer) for each slot. For the best performance, purchase the fastest memory the motherboard supports. CAUTION: Some motherboards are not able to configure memory modules with different manufacturers, or different CAS or density values. To ensure your memory is compatible, make sure all SO-DIMMs have the same part number.".
In terms of how much to put in each slot, here is what they say...
"SO-DIMM memory and requirements: Notebooks use SO-DIMMs (Small outline dual in-line memory modules). They are smaller and thinner than other DIMMs, so are used when there is less space within a chassis. SO-DIMM modules for HP computers must meet the following requirements:
The number of pins on the SO-DIMM must match the socket type.
      SO-DIMM memory requires a 200-pin slot.
DDR2 SO-DIMMs are not compatible with DDR1 DIMM and DDR2 DIMM memory modules.
DDR3 SO-DIMMs are not compatible with DDR1 or DDR2 and use a 204 pin slot.
With a computer running at a system bus of 533 MHz or 667 MHz, use a PC2-4200 (DDR2 DIMM 533) type"
(====> and yes, this is the current support info on the website, but looks like they haven't updated it in a while!!)
Lastly they add: "If possible, make sure all memory modules in your configuration are from the same manufacturer and have the same part number" BECAUSE "If memory speeds are mixed, the system performs at the lower memory speed".
SOOOOOO, your combo should should come out to 2666, according to the above. Memory is soooo cheap nowadays, I would put in the max amount possible.
PS. I just looked up your notebook, and it said the slots are inaccessible?

    Great video!
In the QuickSpecs for the HP 255 G7 I found this information:
    Maximum Memory
    8 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM10
    8 GB DDR4-1866 SDRAM10
    Memory
    8 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (1 x 8 GB)
    8 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (2 x 4 GB)
    4 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (1 x 4 GB)
    8 GB DDR4-1866 SDRAM (1 x 8 GB)
    4 GB DDR4-1866 SDRAM (1 x 4 GB)
    8 GB DDR4-1866 SDRAM (2 X 4 GB)
According to this table you have 3 options:
1 x 8 GB (Maximum memory in one slot),
or 2 x 4 GB (Maximum memory if you want to use both slots),
or 1 x 4 GB (1 slot used. You can still add 4 GB in the other slot)
My question is: does it really work with 16 GB (2 x 8 GB)? Will it start and accept 16 GB, Is it stable?

Yes, I have a video covering this here: th-cam.com/video/S6a6vMI1Lx8/w-d-xo.html
Typically though the HP 250/255 G7 only support the type of storage they are supplied with - models with a 2.5" SATA drive only most likely won't have the M.2 connector on the mainboard. Likewise, models supplied with an M.2 drive (like mine) will need the SATA cable and board added in, which is quite expensive to buy from HP.

Keep the video up on a screen playing while you go through it. It's not a big deal really! Having two nice flat head screw drivers to take the case apart helps, you put one in the case, and then slide the 2nd in the opening and move it along, and keep prying! It will just pop open as you go. If any part seems extra difficult go back look at the video and see if you are missing a hidden screw! These things are more durable than you think as far as working on them goes. You should be able to do it. Upgrading the memory in these things makes a world of difference, they really are slow and glitchy unless you have like 16 to 32 GB of ram in them. Anyway good luck!

Would this be good for photo editing (basic) I have a MacBook Air 2017 but the screen is awful and I was always told Apple Macs are only computers that you can edit photos, but then I saw someone use a photo editing app on a pc and now I’m confused haha, also new MacBooks don’t have a sd card slot :/

Of course you can edit photos on PC. The screen on this isn't anything special though, only a TN panel on the model I had so not amazing contrast or colour accuracy.

MB cache and 2 cores ) .It has a one (1) 4 GB, "1866 MHz SODIMM memory module . What would be the right part to upgrade memory to 8 GB . I would also appreciate if you could provide me with a link on Amazon where i could purchase such a module . Thank you in advance .

I think I have some insight here. Some of the older 255 G7 models have only one memory slot. Now that’s some BS. With only one slot you can only have 8. Now I’ll have to return the memory I just bought ughhh.

Nowhere can I find this information :(

    • @LuckyPig
      @LuckyPig 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The HP 255 G7 (7DF18EA) as stated in the HP site has only the m.2 fully implemented but still has the physical bay for a 2.5" internal drive and an extra (available to all 255 g7 ryzen series) sata controller for either optical or HDD/SSD use (as you can see for yourself here : th-cam.com/video/S6a6vMI1Lx8/w-d-xo.html). What is missing is the cable/adaptor for it. Despair not, both are available from HP and 3rd party manufacturers and shouldn't cost much since it's just a ribbon with the appropriate plugs for either side(no extra electronics).

Is this process under warranty, what damage to the warranty may be

    • @BrueComputing
      @BrueComputing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

In the case of my machine I did not break any warranty seals, but if disassembling a machine I would always assume that the warranty MAY be voided. Obviously in the case of a warranty issue you would want to return the system to its original configuration, and any upgraded parts you fitted would not be covered.
I always recommend using plastic pry tools to avoid damage to the plastics, keep track of what screws came from what location, and be calm and methodical to limit the chance of any issues.

You can have odd pairings but it's not advisable. You would be better buying two banks of identical ram either 2 x4gb or 2 x 8gb. You also eliminate the more problematic issue of different mhz speeds of ram.

    • @BrueComputing

HP actually ship all models of the HP 250 and 255 G7 with DDR4-2666 modules installed - either part number 937236-855 (8GB) or L10598-855 (4GB).
The speed it runs at is dictated by the maximum memory speed the processor supports - the Ryzen 3 3200U supports a maximum speed of DDR4-2400, so the memory runs at that.
The module I recommend is of the same specification as the one supplied with the machine.

Hi I've just bought one of these. I've been looking at the quickspecs document and it says maximum ram is 8gb yet it has two slots. Is that a max per slot or am I missing something?
