  • Guide to upgrading or fitting an M.2 SSD to the HP 250/255 G7 laptop, and how to upgrade or add a 2.5" HDD or SSD to the system.
    The laptops M.2 slot can take both SATA and PCIe NVME SSDs, such as the Samsung 970 Pro: amzn.to/2Tl5bzc
    Adding a 2.5" SSD or HDD to non-2.5" bay equipped models requires the drive cable (L20456-001) and HDD Drive Board (L20454-001)

    I think that Hp should put this video to their official support channel since there is no good explanation on this matter, nearly all Hp laptop users (including me until very short while ago) don't even know that they can add second hdd via hdd connector board replacement or cable into their laptops which come with default m2 ssd, thanks for this super helpful video!

    For the ones who faint when looking at the prices for board and cable: I just installed a "LS-G072P / 4350M932L01" Board & Cable ("compatible with hp15-da hp15-db"). It cost me around 20€ and it works just fine for me with a 2.5" SSD. Thanks for the video, btw!

    I like the old laptops where stuff was so easily replaceable from bottom. HDD? Unscrew the cover, pop-out the old one pop-in new one, screw cover back on done. RAM? Same. Battery? Now that's best, Unlock, press, swap. Yeah! You're running low on battery? Put in another one! Full again.
    Thickness? A bit more. Weight? Also.
    I/O ports? Yes. That's enough of answer.
    Keyboard? It actually clicks and travels.
    Dusty fan? Remove it's bottom cover and clean it. Easy.
    Repair something else? Unscrew bottom screws, get in.

    So u say i can install an NVMe SSD in there & i would hav no compatibility issues.
    However, would i need to manually go into the BIOS & change the settings to PCIe as opposed to SATA to make sure it will run at the native NVMe SSD speeds?

    • @BYMasterMM
      @BYMasterMM 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't have to, that setting you're thinking of is strictly for the SATA controller, (using IDE/compatibility mode instead of AHCI for backwards compatibility with old OSes for SATA drives. Or RAID if you're planning to use some logical setup for redundancy or speed increase), while NVMe will strictly only use the PCIe bus by default without configuration in BIOS, as it is separate from the SATA controller in the laptop.

    Is your laptop overheating ? My g7 255 just by running an 1080p yt vid + light browsing causes it to go into 90degrees C. Or a simple 4k YT vid. Exhausted air is cold. Only about 1/3 of the heatpipe gets very hot, about 1/3 is hot to the touch but bearable and 1/3 is quite cold. All this while it's running on 90degrees C in hwmonitor and starts throttling.

    Hi @Brue Computing, my laptop is the same as the one in your video, without an optical drive. I want to add an HDD using an optical drive caddy rather than source the board and cable to put one in the HDD bay space. It appears that even though the casing doesn't have a space for an optical drive, the SATA connector is still present on the motherboard - is this correct?
    Also, are there any mounting points for an optical drive caddy, or is just a case of hoping the case screw lines up with a hole in the caddy? Obviously I don't want the caddy ratting around inside. And is it it a 9.5mm caddy that is required?
    Thanks in advance.

    • @BrueComputing
      @BrueComputing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, mainboard has the connector regardless. Caddy would be 9.5mm thick.
      Best option would be to source a replacement base panel with the opening for the optical drive, mounting bracket, and front panel for the drive (which will fit on the caddy to match the shape of the base). The non-optical drive base has some strengthening webbing moulded into it which would obstruct fitting a caddy internally.

    • @YusufFelly
      @YusufFelly 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Beware that the optical drive uses a USB 2.0 to SATA bridge which basically means that the speed of the SSD will be limited by the USB 2.0 max speed which is 30~40 MB/s.

    Firstly I would like to thank you for the short and concrete presentation of HP255 G7. It is really useful and helped me to decide for this Laptop. Very positive on this materialization is also the cooling fan position, very easy to detach or repair if needed.
    Secondly I do have a question, as the version of 255 I found in Greece (at an attractive price) includes a DVD-RW (Supermulty DL) drive, which I cannot see in your video. Does the one you have opened included a DVD-RW?? Is it removable?? cause I could not locate internal slot for this. Thank you in advance.

      Hi Im in spain. It sounds like you have the same one I have . Its got the optical drive in it . I bought it from a shop called worten here in spain . It has the amd 4 with radeon 3 cpu/gpu chip. 4 gb ram and a 500 gb hdd . got it with just dos installed for 125 euros . I have put windows 10 pro on it . I have had the back off and it can swap out the 4gb memory module for an 8gb . lokks like there is a slott for an ssd ( which would be better than the hdd I have although it does load up quite fast ) The procedure for taking the back cover off is the same but here is the thing . The dvd drive front plate is flush with the case so when you try to remove it you have to take of the cover as much as possible then reach in and unplug the dvd drive . It comes out easy so no worry there. then you have to slide it out of the case before you can then unclip the final part from the main body of the PC . Putting it back it sthe reverse . You need to line up the side with the gap for the dvd drive , then slide it through and plug in. Then you can press the rest of it down as in the video . It is fiddly and needs care and patience but it can be done . I agree that it is very good value and it works well . I plan to swap the ram and add ssd to it . It will be a decent little PC for the money . Good Luck

    • @Ross.Bagatski
      @Ross.Bagatski ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrTimjm009 I think there is a more gentle approach to remove DVD drive during disassembly. For instance, to leave the tray in open position before switching the laptop off. Then, after the screw, which holds it, is removed, you can take DVD drive out pulling by the open tray. Or if you forgot to press the button on DVD before switching it off there is a small hole on the DVD. I think it is for opening the DVD in off state with a needle.

      Getting the HDD caddy, cable and PCB is generally not cost effective, hard to source and £60+ for the bits.

Like 0.04 mgbs download speeds and we have a 300 mgbs wifi service. This particular card is an AC 7265 802.11, supposedly supposed to open the band width up to max 846 mgbs. A word of caution: *If* you plan to upgrade the HP buy one with a m.2 SSD istalled. It might be costly to buy the HD carrier but it's doable. I bought one with a HD installed and wanted to insert a m.2 afterward but the m.2 connector's missing on the board. So unless you're pretty firm with SMD soldering *and* know exactly which connector part no. ought to be sitting there *and* know where to get one from you're f*cked.This is true for a 6HM88ES model at least (aka el cheapo).

      If the battery is faulty it should still turn on with mains power.
      Normally if the DC jack is damaged you should be able to see the centre section of the jack is broken - normally happens when someone trips over the charger with it plugged in.
      Part number for the DC jack is L20475-001 - search for that on eBay and you should find them.

      If the system won't spin up the fan when turned on with the power connected then there is a likely a mainboard failure.

      @@DadSkool I would assume it'll only have a 2.5" SATA drive and no M.2 slot then. There are two types of M.2 drive - SATA based ones are basically the same as 2.5" SATA drives in terms of controllers, performance (max of around 550MB/sec), etc, just in a smaller form factor. NVMe/PCIe M.2 SSDs are a lot faster (1500MB/sec+, depending on the specific drive, some a lot faster) but at generally higher cost, power consumption, heat, etc.
