  • I explore Cuba in a once in a life time opportunity to experience a country stuck in the past, with old American cars and amazing buildings.

One of my favourite moments in the book World War Z (the book, not that monstrosity of a film) is when they narrate how Cuba is essentially the zombie free haven because it’s cut off from the world and they also have so much ability to repatch and repair what they have rather than throw it away.

Those retro old cars look really awesome, shame that other countries didn't salvage more of them! The older cars were built simpler and therefore had less to go wrong with them. It also makes them way more repairable and serviceable - no having to plug a computer into your car to find out what is wrong with it.

Awesome video man, and great that you could share this experience with your father! Amazing how resourceful humans can be when they're forced to. Really highlights how terrible our "everything is disposable" mindset is over here in the West.

Never cross my mind that Hugh will be traveling to Cuba, the place where I was born. Currently living in US I can compare both countries and economies very well. True in cuba you repair anything, but you have plenty of “time”to do it. As he point out cubans have a lot of “patience”…due to they dont have more options available. Is option A or A. Is a real shame what happened to that country. Having so much human potential as Hugh point out too. Gracias a Jorge(George) for the help to Hugh. Hope someday cubans stop hitting their own heads and just move forward on the right direction.

YOU DIDN'T LIKE CUBAN FOOD?!?!?!?!? Man, I'd love to visit Cuba just for the food. Cuba is definitely on my bucket list, not for the food, since one can find good Cuban food outside of Cuba, but more for how it has been kind of frozen in time and there are lots of good people there from what I hear. Cool video Hugh.

I suggest that CN and RU will invest in Cuba than western countries. Replace the old ones with Chinese smartphones, cars, television, etc. and Russian weapons.

Being both Cuban and son of an electronics engineer, repairs were a common sight while I grew up.

Coming from the US, where parts are readily available domestically... I've always complained how everything has to be imported, whenever I need parts here in the Philippines.

in the US its all about Planned Obsolesce. people buy things run them till they break and then throw them away and buy another. I garbaged picked a relatively clean box fan. works great just needs a bit of lubercation and a speed control knob (assuming its the reason it was tossed to began with as it was missing)

Vox had made a documentary on piracy in Cuba which exists because of their lack of internet penetration. It's wild how much they even make use of the resources they have. Nevertheless, this was an amazing video Hugh.

It's the first time I've actually seen Cuba, although friends of mine have visited there and spoke very highly of the people. Great video.

Perhaps vintage TVs & radios from shango066's videos could be more useful in Cuba since that country still receives analog TV broadcasts. Visiting Cuba definitely feels like a time capsule, going back to the less-complicated life.
