I always thought that physical is the damage type and strike, thrust, slash are sub types or something. I learned something from your channel. Fix this.
How is that weird? I thought it was kinda obvious that physical damage was an accumulation of all of its damage sub-types, that is unless you're a brainlet who doesn't understand basic addition and subtraction.
now lets remember they also made the blade hitbox useless... and back stabs should be thrust with a scythe, since it just gets stabbed through. and that poise still doesnt work
the idea that you can "stab through" with a scythe is fucking retarded. It looks so dumb. Why couldn't they give them some cool animation like you slash their throat from behind or something.
except you don't backstab them with the pointy end of the scythe, you kinda just... mash the stick/hilt through their back. xD That would be neat Mike234 but that move is reserved for Sister Friede :). But I would love if they made scythes backstabs like you said, and Whip backstabs a strangle animation :) claws should rip em apart... I got a lot of Gore(y) ideas for finishers/backstabs/riposts :D
Emil Happy the blade goes through though. wouldnt that whole thing just rip the person apart? what a badly done animation, its likely the worst in the game tbh
Fun fact. Dark souls 3 doesn’t have any calculations. They put all the files in random places and just used trail and error to make the game playable. And the players tried to make sense of it!
This reminds me of a rumor about DS1. I think PHYSICAL in that game was the complete opposite, and the only enemy that dealt it was the roof slug blobs. Remaster when?
Limit Breakers does wolnirs fog deal dark damage? Just curious Edit: well just watched the vid... I was just randomly asking as well. I didn't even know you were going to touch on the subject haha.
You tested backstabs, but not ripostes. Knowing Dark Souls, I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if ripostes had their damage type determined in a completely separate way from backstabs because what even is Dark Souls.
The scythe does different damage types depending on what part of it hits. If the blade hits, it does slash damage, but if any other part of it hits, it does strike. You can test this against the skeletons; if you're closer, you'll do a lot more damage, but if you're spaced just right, it does slash, and therefore much less.
It would if this was dark souls 2, but dark souls 3 doesn't have the 'sweet spot' system of 2 and went back to the ds1 setup on polearms, spears, and scythes.
I think EpicNameBro figured that stuff out back in Dark Souls 1. Not necessarily the damage type, but that damage output depends on which part of the weapon you hit the enemy, and which part of the attack animation.
Faustlican I thought the miracle build thing was just a meme for Dark Souls 3. But I recently tried a miracle build in Dark Souls 1 in a co-op game with my friend. It was suffering. Acquiring Great Lightning Spear had me so hyped...and it was so disappointing. It probably didn't help that I was exclusively using the reinforced club as my weapon though.
I think I finally figured it out after a over a year, testing and learning about game design Lava damage is of course fire only But it has a automatic damage boost to keep up with your absorption value, so that you can't just stack a truck of absorption and walk in lava forever Iron flesh worked because it not only gives you absorption but also it gives you a flat hidden damage resistance bonus to all damage, this is so that it's slightly harder to get oneshoted by the negative lighting absorption it gives you The secret is, once you reach 100% absorption even if the hypothetical lava AR is boosted by a infinite amount to keep up you're still absorbing 100% of it If you lower your absorption to 99% thought, you should take the damage as normal since it got boosted to the point that 1% of it is equal 100% of it when you have 0% absorption
Tim Herdendorf he had a lot to say this video. Imagine how long it would be if he had to get all that across in Text to Speech. The old man voice is entertaining, but I understand why he just wants to talk sometimes. It seems like a lot of testing had to go into this video so I appreciate it.
That's actually really interesting. If I had to guess, I'd bet that they separate "physical" from the other three physical types so that they can separately balance PVP and PVE. And perhaps the inconsistency of backstab type damage is because they wanted a way to balance the damage of backstabs without nerfing the weapon's damage overall?
This is actually pretty useful information to keep in mind for wearing armor. I do wish that Physical wasn't its own type and was just spread across Strike, Slash, and Thrust. Pretty much every attack imaginable can be put into one of those. EDIT: Also if the Scythe does Strike damage on its normal attacks, that makes it not only a weapon type designed to bypass shields, but also a more effective on armored enemies.
@@Муня-ж7з As of now I think it'd be easier to rename them as Cut, Strike, and Pierce. Axes would likely be under Strike or Pierce, while pretty much any (non-primarily-thrusting) sword would be under Cut.
Does hornet ring, that change animation of backstab, can also change damage type of a backstab? Like a weapon deal physical on backstab but with hornet ring in becomes strike, or something like that. And so: Is there a weapon in the game that can deal all kind of physical type damages?
I always thought physical was just a general damage reduction that was used to reduce damage taken first and then afterwards strike, thrust or slash did a second damage reduction. Guess now we know that those are are almost completely useless...

Hold on; is the sweet spot mechanic a thing in Dark Souls 3? It's possible that if you don't hit the scythe on the sweet spot, it deals strike damage instead of slash.
that was the question I was wondering. since friede's scythe doesn't seem to have a sweet spot, it dealt it's slashing properly, but the other scythes would just be hitting with the blunt weapon handles, meaning the strike would make sense
Flat damage reduction is done first, then absorption reduces damage by a percentage, in really really short terms. Thus, 50 absorption is 50% damage reduction, 100 is 100% damage reduction. However, the actual math ingame is stupid messy because FromSoft. Yeah.
Negative, mercury used to be flat damage but was buffed in a patch. It's now based on the HP of an enemy. The reason it can kill things is because it hits many, many times. If I do 1% of an enemy's health 1000 times, I can definitely kill that enemy.
I would have NEVER guessed that slash, thrust, strike, and physical were all different categories, the way they lay it out is absolutely stupid, but thank you good sir for clearing the confusion and solving the mystery of lava man that not even the old man could solve.
I'm pretty sure scythe does strike normally, because of the hilt hitting you, but slash when you hit with the 'sweet spot', because of the blade hitting you.
I remember a long time ago, I saw something about spears dealing thrust only close to the tip, the shaft supposedly deals blunt. There is a chance you saw the scythe deal strike damage because you didn't get hit by the sweetspot but by the shaft

I do not know if this was patched out (or covered in another video) but you can block the lava pool which has the two items in it. If you hold up your shield while facing the same way you walk into the room, the lava will bounce off of your shield and deal mostly stamina damage instead (given that you have a shield with the proper stats).
Is there a limit to the amount of prism stones you can have active at the same time? Or will the first ones dissappear after a certain amount are thrown?
The firebomb info combined with Old Man's "can you deal 0 damage?" video is interesting! For fun's sake, I yeeted a firebomb at one of the Lava Slimes in Demon ruins (expecting to see maybe 1 damage or something equally useless), and dealt 0 damage apparently. I expected all the fire damage to just be entirely ignored, obviously, but was surprised that the (even though it's small) physical portion of firebombs also did nothing at all. I suppose it makes sense, since their physical resistances are high enough to bring most weapons from maybe 200-damage-per-swing on average, to like 20-30. But then again, the point of the 0-damage video was to lower your damage on 'regular' enemies (even with the giant crabbos) to a 0-ish amount then being rounded down. Sadly, yeeting firebombs at the slimes did not activate DS1 poise.
It looks like, as far as damage types making sense (in terms of the different resistances actually meaning something) and in terms of a ton of multiplayer / PVP elements, there's plenty of room in the 3rd person exploration RPG genre that Dark Souls games occupy for new games to iterate and improve on the system.
Diving into all the data and misused stats of Dark Souls 3 is like winning the Indy 500 and then discovering that your car's engine was actually a hamster running in a wheel.

Maybe two negatives make a positive?
But the hitboxes?
Best Souls 2 confirmed
Instead defense is convoluted in Drangleic
I think I finally figured it out after a over a year, testing and learning about game design
Lava damage is of course fire only
But it has a automatic damage boost to keep up with your absorption value, so that you can't just stack a truck of absorption and walk in lava forever
Iron flesh worked because it not only gives you absorption but also it gives you a flat hidden damage resistance bonus to all damage, this is so that it's slightly harder to get oneshoted by the negative lighting absorption it gives you
The secret is, once you reach 100% absorption even if the hypothetical lava AR is boosted by a infinite amount to keep up you're still absorbing 100% of it
If you lower your absorption to 99% thought, you should take the damage as normal since it got boosted to the point that 1% of it is equal 100% of it when you have 0% absorption
Then how are you supposed to get da loot without biting the dust if getting 100% isnt naturally possible? :(
