Hey there ! A king actually has 2376 HP, the wiki is right about that and you can easly see it using the debug version. The reason they die early is beacuse the game checks if they have more than 1% HP left. So 24HP left the king is alive, 23HP he dies. Also while you'll still meet 4 kings, it's actually possible to finish the fight without killing any of them by shooting them from far away using a bow. Doing that will damage the collective health bar but not the individual kings.
I know its years late.. but I was about to comment to say that i've killed 4 of the 4 kings before and a fifth has spawned, taken one puny hit and died with like90% of its hp still left ending the fight

It's only individual kings that are affected by the 1% rule but as soon as the collective health bar reaches 0, the boss battle ends and all remaining kings dies, regardless of how much HP they had left.

The way I see it, the Lord Soul fragment makes Four Kings immortal (kind of in the same way cursed undead are), hence why they do respawn (maybe through bonfire of sorts) and there can't be more than 4 of them since they are still just four beings. But, at the same time, since they all share the same soul and depend on it, any damage dealt to them slowly separates them from said soul (in the same way deaths separate undead from their humanity, eventually leading to complete hollowing), so eventually you just absorb the Lord Soul off of them, killing them for good.
Someone may have already stated this but... My theory has always been that there are indeed four kings, but the reason why more show up is because it's actually the *same* king that you killed, just revived. Think of it this way: you show up to the fight; then you kill the first king and his three bros show up. Well that fourth king that spawns is the same one that you killed at first... Just revived through the abyss. And they keep reviving until not even the abyss can bring them back from the damage you've done to them. Now I know what you're probably thinking by now: *[D E E P L O R E]* (Either that or tldr xD)
The Abyss Watchers were able to be a singular Lord of Cinder in DS3 because the shared wolf's blood bound their souls together. The shard of the soul given to the 4 Kings by Gwyn likely did the same. With their soul bound to each other it would be impossible to kill one unless you kill all as the soul of one is kept "alive" by the other 3 (because it's all one soul.)

But what if 2 phantoms perform group buffs which further increases the players damage, then leave before the host enters the fog gate? Would this be possible and could it increase overall damage of all weapons against a boss, making one-shot builds have higher potential? Just wanted to know your thoughts on it.

I know this is an old video but I feel the need to say that the number 4 in Japan is associated with death. The language has multiple ways of pronouncing most numbers based on context and one of 4’s is a homophone of death ‘Shi’. It’s a bit of an archaic version now but there’s still a bunch of superstitious surrounding the number because of it (most hospitals don’t have room 4s or forth floors because of it, going straight from 3 to 5). That may be why there are 4 kings.
I feel like the best lore for this to be true, would simply be that the 4 kings simply rotate out, there is only 4 kings, but they come back into the fight after being defeated.
