Is it possible to LIVE in LAVA? - The HOTTEST Dark Souls 3 Data

- Have you ever gotten a burning desire to make a build to survive the LAVA'S SCOLDING INTENSITY? Can it even be done!? Time to put that heated debate to rest as we find out!
So what did we find out eh?
- The lava damage is weird. Flat fire defense works wonders against it, but fire absorption is really weak.
- At first I mistook this as perhaps the fire dealt split damage, some fire and some physical.
- Fire damage ticks like mad, about 4-5 times a second.
- The lowest we can mitigate this damage is about 22 damage per tick, so that is still 100+ damage we lose per second!
- Like most stats in dark souls 3, fire resistance/absorption seems to get diminishing returns, but since the final result is a percentage of damage reduced it effectively SHOULD actually give you that % improvement.
- But no, I have no idea when absorption is being used in environments, the lava pools AND bonfires do not respond to a 76% decrease in damage, heck, I doubt it even comes close to 40%.
- Dark Souls 2 it worked additively , exceeding 900 fire resist (since there is a hidden 100 too) would mean fire immunity (works like a percentage, so 400+100 resist would HALVE fire damage). This would just be rounded up to 1% damage if 1000+ total resist.
- I also tested the fireball using mobs in the smoldering lake, who cast the giant fire balls. I cut that part out but if you look at 3:40 you can see what good MAXIMUM FIRE RESIST does, absorption is REALLY weak.
- But it's alright, you can block one of the lava pools. No spells or buffs needed. Just a Black Iron Greatshield and a Sun Princess Ring! The shield reduces the lava damage by 99.6%! HURRAH!
- Iron flesh when used in lava stops the hurt sound effect, it's just oddly silent.
- The dragon tooth does not stack with itself, so one only. If I remember right in DS2 you could use 2!
So basically.... when the hell is absorption used? It sure as hell isn't PvP or environmental damage. Most defenses/rings get trashed in PvP mode. Some mobs I fought with fire damage didn't use the full fire absorption amount either. So I got no idea...

In short, the lava is attacking you, as if with a fire-infused weapon, several times per second. And those attacks come from a direction, so you can block them.

Most pyromancies are easy to dodge anyway so it doesn't really matter unless your being ganked by 4 people at once and one of them is casting pyromancies at you while the other 3 are stunlocking you. Like a bunch of fucking casuals.

I wouldn't actually call this useless data as we now know from the data presented that elemental resistances can be outdone by physical defence in most situations...and that dark souls 3 needs a resistances patch

black knight shield +4, red bug pellet and flash sweat. You can run get items and get back no problems. Lava always flows one way so once you pick up an item, RUN!

0:52 this, is actually incorrect, while yes, the entirety has the most fire defense, for max FIRE defense, you actually want to put the black iron helmet, havel's armor, winged knight gauntlets or havel's gauntlets, and havel's leggings.
Oh, and also 5:53, I've actually done some research and testing myself, and the shields with the highest dark absorption is the deep cathedral shield, the highest lighting resistance is the lighting lothric shield, and the highest magic resistance is the crystal lothric great shield, with the deep having 99.6 in dark guard absorption, the lighting having a 95.7 guard absorption, and the crystal having a 91.3 magic absorption.

Ah, you had me worried you didn't know about blocking lava. But you came through in the end.
You can also buff a shield with Great Magic Shield to give it 100% fire block for the duration if you just need to be in the lava for not a super long time.
For facing the other way in that lava, or going in any lava for that matter, you can also use Stomp from Dark Sword and Fume, as those block omnidirectionally. Using a Black Knight Shield with a fire-infused Dark Sword and buffing the shield with great magic shield, you can get all the items without much pain.

I have watched this video a few times and I think I understand. It looks like fire absorption does not occur in lava or environmental. The defense is what matters. The 'Max Physical' You tested with the fire had a much higher fire defense. And when you went dragon mode in lava, it made it worse because the defense was worst.
But if fire absorption wasn't factored into environmental damage, then the maximum fire absorption armor setup wouldn't have beaten the maximum physical absorption armor setup. You're right about the rest though. Both fire absorption and defense matter, and the dragon is lacking the latter.

I am uneducated, what is wrong with dark souls 3.
I'm starting to feel like damage calculation was made so complex and confusing just to cover the fact that its broken and unbalanced. Fromsoft really shouldn't underestimate their data mining fans, even if some persist to find meaning in the pointless. It just seems weird after bloodborne, which kept things deliciously simple and effective. granted that game tones down the number crunching rpg stuff in favor of more reactionary combat.
Well, many ideas are actually good, but their implementation in practice is what leaves players with much to wish for. So, I don't think the complexity itself is for the main purpose of hiding something that's unbalanced, but in reverse: they overdid it, some of the things kinda suck and are imbalanced, system itself is for most players intuitively and technically of high complexity, including some weird quirks, making it hard to understand and confusing... but they could still help to explain it better, so the lack of explanation and certain things working differently than stated (or on the verge of being truth) is something one could sometimes be actually angry for :-/
im years late, but the math checks out. absorption doesnt work on the lava, but fire defense does. the full physical defense build had more fire defense than the fire absorb build, so it did better against the lava than the naked dragon build.
whats really janked is why the lava counts as an attack, and why that attack is directional

It's because wearing armor pieces (any armor) adds undisclosed resists
i mean it should usually make sense. wearing metal armor should make a fairly large difference.it just gets fucked up when you wear a loincloth and it's like 50% as effective as huge ass armor.

that particular mechanic doesn't even have any relevant relation to the video, though. it doesn't add "undisclosed" resists. armor pieces just add flat physical DEF (or, in another perspective, prevent a DEF penalty from being applied to your base stats).
flat physical DEF affects lower damage sources more than higher damage sources, so the hybrid phys/fire damage of lava gets reduced by a fair bit - which is traditional for Souls split damage.
havel's has both good phys resist and fire resist so it reduces it the most. contrary to popular opinion, absorption is pretty valuable if you're not a perfect dodger, so all of the comments about "lol DS3's armor system sucks" are pretty low-tier bait. it's the first time the armor system is close to being properly balanced, something Bloodborne also accomplishes. i only hope Sekiro continues the tradition.

Of course. From, in their *cough* infinite wisdom knew how overpowered magic resistance would be because they knew that tons of people would use and rely on magic in this game. And they also knew how amazing absorption is, so 20% is just too much for the measly cost of 40 strength and a shit ton of vit (the...best... stat in the game).

Like the teleporting dogs, enemies with poise and unlimited stamina, no way to get items without dying ect.

Yeah because spamming dudes in armor through all of Dark Souls 2 was definitely not cheap or the ridiculous hitboxes on everything. Dark Souls 1 has ghosts that cannot even be hit by normal means and there is nothing that hints at their weakness. Skeletons just keep getting back up while you run around aimlessly searching for a necromancer, Blight towns framerate combined with the abhorrent conditions make it easily the cheapest area in the series ever. Teleporting dogs is a framerate issue and a side effect of the Bloodborne engine, just unfortunate. What are you even talking about with the poise and stamina thing, all humanoid enemies can run out of stamina and be guard broken as well as get staggered first hit by everything just like us. Your last point just makes no sense whatsoever.
Brandon M. Bruursema the armor dudes were atleast fairly easy to kill. Most of them were way to predictable to be considered a serious thread. Well except the heide knights (you know the guys with the buckethelmets).

I do it all the time, to escape from espionager, fill bedrooms with lava.
You have to cast aural decoy to distract the lava then you can walk past it that’s how he looked like he could just block it
