BRICKLAYING..HOW TO INSTALL A CAVITY TRAY ABOVE AN EXTENSION.... EXTENSION PART 9

  • THIS IS OUR FIRST DAY ON THE EXTENSION JOB . THE ARCHITECT SPECIFIED WE PUT A CAVITY TRAY RIGHT ACROOS THE FULL WITH OF THE HOUSE . AS IT IS DIRETLY BELOW 2 WINDOW IT IS POINTLESS SMASHING A HOLE RIGHT ACROSS THE HOUSE AND MAKING IT WEAKER.
WE OPTED TO JUST GO BETWEEN THE WINDOWS . IT WAS VERY AWKWARD TO PROP BUT WENT QUITE WELL . WE USED A PETROL STHIL SAW FOR THE CUTS AS THEY DO A FULL 100MM CUT. WE WERE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE BRICKS AND MANAGED NOT TO BREAK ANY WHICH WAS LUCKY AS THEY ARE DISCONTINUED ......ENJOY

Class act. Taking the extra time to ensure the joints are fully filled on the replaced brickwork, so they are just as strong as before. Most brickies wouldn't bother.
Wonder if a few cheap little screw jacks would make things easier for supporting the wall as you are working? Quick to adjust, light enough to drag up onto the scaffold and save the risk of damaging bricks.

Pre formed plastic trays are awesome for stepped and horizontal trays. Stepped we buy with the lead on with correct pitch. Vertical we buy blank and cut are own lead in as it's easy to cut in straight lead with no wastage and works out cheaper.
Plus you only need to cut out one course instead of three.
We dry pack with slate as we go so no way of brickwork above dropping.

Yeah grind out a bet joint with smaller grinder in block work to put cavity tray in nail and rejoint in place alone whole span, replace all insulation above and under. Could help noticing the first half you put in was tipping making the strecher above and half above that tip also but i guess only a brickie will notice that .
Good suggestion usung ridgid trays but realistically would still need to install insulation corectly and dont think just taking out one course would provide adequate manovability for that

This is strange one because yes if there is another story above the lintel there should be a tray damp but in all my years of this kind of work I have never been asked by an inspector to put a tray damp in. You would have to go four or five courses above the lintel and unless you fixed into a bed joint of the internal cavity wall it would be pretty pointless. On this video I am struggling to understand what the bricklayer is trying to achieve as I have never seen a tray damp put in the piker between two windows.

Anyone watching this, trust me, this is bum information. You always use a preformed cavity tray, which can either be done in lead or you can use preformed plastic cavity trays that has a lead cover flashing attached so your soakers from the roof of your extension can tuck under the flashing to give you a forever water tight problem free structure. IG do a good one.
