    The lead flashing is fitted at the same time trays are installed, it is not possible to fit the lead afterwards. Everything must be laid on a mortar bed (lead, trays and all masonry). The black inserts to which you refer are pieces of slate, the process is known as "slate pinning" and ensures reinstated masonry is wedged and solid.

    Is the lead fitted at the same time as the tray and mortar bedded in? Or could you put the lead in after installing the trays? Also on the first tray there are 4 black things inserted above the brick.. what are these?
