    This will be an in depth tutorial on how to make a pair of realistic cherries in Blender, without using any image texture at all (except background).
    The video consists of six parts:
    Part 1) (0.08) Create Shape. Model Cherry + Stem
    Part 2) (10.05) Add Background and Light
    Part 3) (17.52) Cherry Material. NB! Complete Node tree on start!
    Part 4) (42:40) Stem Material. NB! Complete Node tree on start!
    Part 5) (56:14) Add drops to Cherries.
    Part 6) (01:11:13) Compositing.
    The end result you can watch on artstation at: www.artstation.com/artwork/Z1aWx

      Amazed that this old tutorial still can help you get a grip on how the texturing work, but really glad it did :).

    After 40 years working in 3D product design I am now learning Blender. I must say. What a thoroughly enjoyable tutorial. Your attention to detail is truly outstanding and something that resonates with my own practices as a designer. I wonder if you could push your already incredible creation to its absolute limit by trying to add visual 'weight' and 'tension' to the heavier, lower water drops. It is just a suggestion and should NOT be taken as a criticism. Your techniques and tutorials are absolutely FANTASTIC. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I take my hat off to you. Really well done. Bravo. Dg

      Thank you very much and I really love the time you took on feedback :). This is one of my first tutorials and despite lousy sound and nervous speaker, it is o´still one of my most popular tutorials. The drops...yes, I could have done more with those and there are a few other things as well like nowadays all people are using the principled shader, which had make this lesson simpler as well. So, just continue to look at my newer tutorials as well and if you feel you are missing something.. especially in the area of material and shaders, don't hesitate to give me a comment or two :).

    I don't know if you're still seeing comments on videos from days far gone, but I'm running into some trouble with the stem. I will try again tomorrow, but when I "S" and "Z" then drag drag drag, the stems comes out of the bottom as well as grows longer on the top! Great tutorial, I'm an absolute beginner and appreciate the clarity you lead with.

    What an amazing tutorial!! I rarely ever comment on videos, but I'm here to say that this still works with Blender 3.0 in 2021. Your instruction is so clear and not only was I able to follow along, I understood the reasoning behind every step. Thank you for breaking it down into digestible parts for this beginner in Blender. The results came out great for a class project!

      Did not even know that this still worked in current version, but wonderful that you had some use of it. A few steps are legacy and you can get the same look much easier today using the principle BSDF... but with the knowledge gained here I think you could transfer it rather easy to a newer workflow as well :).

    Many tutorials by popular channels end up with poor quality rendering result at the end, which is quite disappointing. I'm very impressed that your result really looks perfect as you showed the picture at the beginning!

      Taek Oh Thank you for that comment! I know exactly what you mean and that was one reason I started all this. It demands more minutes in every tutorial, but I think it's worth giving that time and deliver "what you see is what you get" 😊.

    Very good!! What I would like, as a possible improvement, is to have the droplets "collect" more, as they seen to do in the reference image. So that they are a bit more smeared out and not so spherical. Also, there is a collection of water around the stem that would be nice to have. This is just picking on some small details though. Thanks a lot for sharing this great tutorial!

    • @jtornhill
      @jtornhill  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I admit I was a bit quick on the droplets. Will try a bit harder on the complete picture next time ;)

    My result, in case you're interested in: imgur.com/a/ZN2Dt
    It uses PBR materials (Principled shaders), 1K version of Tiergarten, fully procedural background.
    I also reduced the number of drops.

    • @jtornhill
      @jtornhill  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You got a fine end result :). Could be that you should change the DOF slightly on the first cherry to get it nearer the ref. photo, but it certainly worked with your way of doing the background.

  • @flourfree2K

    Great tutorial. So... the reference image won't be needed at all, as the background: you could simply mix the two colors using the Musgrave Shader. By the way, I guess I'll go for Principled Shader (PBR) materials.

    • @jtornhill
      @jtornhill  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks :)! Yes, I know that you could do the background differently. I think I mainly selected this to show that Blender has a "world shader" area as well. Think many people just add an HDRI and think that's it.. while you in reality have a lot of things you can change on the HDRI and how it behaves.

    • @flourfree2K
      @flourfree2K 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm using a color mix, so to save some file size. I'm also making use of the Principled shader and I used the 1K version of the TierGarten (so to save file size, again). After all, it's just a small reflection on the cherries...

  • @9blender126

    Video (04.48) you press the eye icon (display modifier in viewport) ,why/how it helps ? then you have pressed flat in tool panel . please explain . thanks

    • @jtornhill
      @jtornhill  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When doing some editing, it often disturbs having the modifier activated. By pressing the "eye icon" I temporarily inactivate the modifier, thus get a clearer image to work with in edit mode. If you want the modifier to be activated again... then don't forget to press the "eye icon" again :).

      @9blender126 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      sir, while rendering I lost all most all medium/small waterdrops, only large drops remains. but in render preview all drops remains intakes. what is the glitch might be ?

    • @jtornhill
      @jtornhill  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blender Blender Hard to say, but size could differ from preview to render, so play with size on the small. If that doesn't work... delete particlesystem for small and copy the large...using as a template for the small and the start to change size again to get the drops smaller.

    Hey, why is your viewport rendering so fast?

    • @jtornhill
      @jtornhill  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use the built in AddOn "Auto Tile Size", so if you don't use it...start with it :). It makes really a huge impact.

    • @jtornhill
      @jtornhill  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, not anything is "forgotten". 3.30 in to the tutorial that piece is done. The ref. image did not have that much of a shape and that is the one followed. However, I understand what you mean and I could have exaggerated it a little.

    you didnt use principled shader

    • @jtornhill
      @jtornhill  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do I have to ;)? The Principled Shader is fantastic, but has a lot of inputs. To avoid getting people tangled up in all those and to be able to explain what each thing does clearly, I did a choice not to use it here. I have other YT there I put it to use, so I'm not allergic to it :D.

    • @bestboy007
      @bestboy007 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ehm? one big shader for everything is 1000 times easier than 100 nodes. why else does every other renderer use one big node. maya, renderman, vray, everyone except damn blender.

    • @jtornhill
      @jtornhill  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree totally. It's easier to use the principled, but what I wrote was that it's harder to show the principle of shaders with it. What does IOR mean, why do we use textures, how do the SSS affect things and so on? To be able to isolated show what every thing does it's easier as a concept to take and break up the principled in many pieces. Often we don't need most of those things there. When you do know how everything works... well then, it's just to take the principled to the light because it has SSS, IOR, "Normal", roughness and everything else, exactly as you wrote and now you will also know how to use those inputs without even has used it before. As I also wrote, this is just one tutorial out of many that I have and the principled is used... but not here. It will neither remove all those texture steps that I do in this tutorial... even if it has all shaders (no textures)... and those are about 80% of what I'm doing. Hope that clarifies a little why I did it like this here.

    • @bestboy007
      @bestboy007 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i dont know any of it and principled id still easier? just set ior on principled. a extern node doesnt make it easier! everything you do with extern nodes is in principled... i dont get you.

    • @jtornhill
      @jtornhill  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A Principled will not solve any texture issue at all and that is what this tutorial is about. I change noise and musgrave. It will not solve any color issue at all, so I use "ColorRamp". "Principled" is only about shaders... nothing else. A Principled will also go to totally black if input from anything is higher than 1 (which happens if you for instance use musgrave texture and don't use clamp). A principled adds overhead if you just want to have a diffuse and a glossy... Yes, principled is good, but it will not solve everything and it has its issues. In our case those 100 of nodes you mentioned first is here just about 5 nodes connecting to shaders... ok 5 nodes is more than 1, but still.. the tutorial is about textures and colors... not much about shaders. You are totally free to solve it as you please.... but as I wrote... the "principled" is just a tiny thing in this.
