I had a Kangal. Or, He had me. I lived in the south of france. He just walked in to my house one day, and stayed. He had escaped from being kept on a rope by a hunter, who was unhappy with him as he wasn't a good hunters dog. They are really useless hunters dogs, because they will not stay back. They see a threat, they deal with it. He was skinny, his tail was bald and broken. After 6 months he was the most beautiful example I ever saw. He could love like no other dog I had ever had. He would climb on to my lap if I was on the sofa, or walk on to my bed and just collapse on me with a big sigh. I have had many dogs in my life, but Radja, my Kangal was the most wonderful experience I ever had.

As a Turkish, I am amazed by Sheila's comprehension of Kangal's. It is heartwarming. Kangals are indeed exceptional dogs. The area they come from is a small town called Kangal in a city called Sivas. Which has a freezing weather in the winter. And the people in that city, in the villages are immensely proud of them. They symbolize the hardship and the community aspect of those hardworking people.

    I had one.
    His name was Coraggio.
    He lived 13 years.
    He was a sweet soul.
    Very well composed, and sure.
He could’ve handled any breed or species K-9 easily.
His growl was a low, lion like sound.
He scared the piss out of most dogs, and strangers.
    We bonded quite well.
I held his paw on his last breath.
    I miss the guy.

My grandad has a farm in Bursa, Turkey. It was a good 30 minute walk from the closest village but when we were little and wanted snacks and stuff we would walk to it. I remember one time me and my two cousins were heading back from the village late so it was pretty dark. Just when we left the outskirts of the village we started getting surrounded by 3 or 4 street dogs who wanted what was in our bags and seen we were small so thought it was easy pickings. Out of nowhere my grandad's kangal Rambo started chasing them all away then immediately ran back up and inspected us one by one. He must have followed us from the farm to the village in the morning when we left and waited for us to leave the village all day. Cried my eyes out when he passed.

This dog has protection in his genes. I live in Erzurum, Türkiye. Everyone keeps kangal to protect sheep and cows in the mountains. There are many wolves and bears. Let me tell you a story. The kangal dog, which had been searched for missing for 2 days, stayed with the sheep that had given birth on the mountain to protect it. Two days later, the sheep and kangal were found in very healthy condition. It was also in the news. Kangal never leaves anyone from the herd behind.

      So true...
I encountered and petted one in a village many years ago. He was hurt so bad and trying to recover. I asked the reason and I was told he tried to protect the child of the house against several other dogs around five. Killed one of them, but others hurt him real bad, but drew attention on him and saved the kid. Vet. stitched him up. It was a big badass intimitading male but was very friendly to people.
May or may not save you but will definitely die trying no matter what !

@@waynv1835 I cannot say anything about the Caucasian Shepherd, but as a Turk, what I will say about Kangal and Malakli is a fixed opinion. Turkish shepherd dogs are extremely loyal, brave, protective but difficult to train because they value freedom very much, they are not pets, they are part of the family. If you gain the trust of the Kangal or other Turkish shepherd dogs, they will protect you to the death and have a very serious character. In Turkey, people in the countryside respect Kangal dogs very much and consider them as a friend, a part of the family.

i remember when i was a child, my grandad's kangal has fought off a bear one night. I was around 6 or 7, we were visiting grandparents farm house during summer. My granddad had this huge apple orchard with some pear trees in it just next to the house. During early night time when we were playing hide and seek around the house with our cousins and other children, i heard something in the trees. I got close to see if any of the kids hiding there, first i couldnt see what it was because of the darkness. when the moment i realised something huge was in between the trees shaking them, our kangal ran passed me with an amazing speed and charged to the bear. It was like an instant, and bear was 30-40 meters away from me. My dad, uncle and grandpa came running when they heard the dog barking. Dog fought with the bear and bear ran off eventually. He was badly injured from the encounter, but my grandad took care of him and he survived. He became a hero for me after that. Rest in peace Çomar, i miss grandpa and you dearly.

She knows a lot about Kangals.
When a Kangal is around you it does not have to put his pawns on your shoulder and look in to your eyes you will feel that Kangal is a very different type of being with extreme intelligence and personality. When you spend sometime with a Kangal you would understand what she is talking about. Kangals are different in a way that it is hard to describe you need to experience it yourself by spending some time with them. You would feel that they are almost like wise calm human beings with extreme intelligence.

We have a big mixed dog. There’s a lot of guesses for what he is, one is Kangal/lab mix.
A Rottweiler attacked my sister & our dog broke off a steel wire like it wasn’t even there, charged the Rottweiler, & as a 100lb puppy, sat down on the Rottweiler, held him to the ground, and protected my sister. We have big coyote/wolf/wild dog hybrids. He has scared them off our property, he is gentle with our hens & protects them from raccoons & possums. He’ll circle behind small kids and herd them to adults. He’s scared off a burglar too. Really appreciate him.

In Turkey, before the industrial farming and ranches were introduced, usually children would become shepherds of the village (it is still true for some underdeveloped parts of Turkey). My father was one such shepherd of his mountaintop village in Sivas when he was a little kid. Herding more than 100s of sheep whole day on the mountains kilometers away from the village where a wolf pack can descend,an eagle can swoop and lift a child, or a hungry bear can attack. Of course, the loyal, loving and diligent kangal dogs would make the first line of defence against such threats. Once during a cold winter, several wolves attacked around the house of my father family. Their kangal defended the turf with ferocity, fighting against 3 wolves at once. He defended long enough for my grandfather to call for help of other villagers, and they routed the wolves after killing 3 of them. The kangal lost both her front legs and had severe damage on her body, so they had to put her down. It's still amazing to know my father survived that day thanks to a kangal.

I've had 6 dogs and disagree. 5 dogs: No real "problems". One: Not "bad" dog, but one who was clearly psychologically ill in a way. Kind of bipolar. He always had that fear, that we could never take away from him. A big distrust, always there was the danger of him attacking a) male dogs b) humans, also the owners. Situations which we could foresee, but the dog required a lot of organisation. Training did not help and give him security, I'd say at the age of 7 the situation just got accepted and worked around. TBH, I guess 9/10 owners already would have had killed the dog in earlier years. Dog was sometimes happy, sometimes kind of tortured soul. Often changed within minutes. It wasn't easy to live with a dog who at some point "loved" you, in another moment behaved like you are his worst enemy. Couldn't enter the garden at times and had to wait for the dog to calm down.

We have 4 big Kangal dogs in our farmhouse in Turkey. Our dogs protect our other animals in the farm as well. Even though they are giant dogs they don’t need to eat a lot of food. They also love swimming. I take them to the lake twice a month. There are many people wanting to buy our dogs but there is no way we are doing that. Kangals are very special dogs and when you look at them you must see their soul.

I have owned a Kangal for the past 11 years. He is territorial and may bite if someone comes in his yard. However, he will not wonder off property. When I introduce him to workers he accepts them. Off property he loves all but drunk big men. He has never bitten anyone but has showed his teeth. He loves me and wants to be my side 24/7. I don't need a leash to control him. He does what I say. He doesn't alert to other dogs or fight. However, a 7 year old Doberman tried to mount my Buddy but quickly withdrew when Buddy showed his teeth. A smart move for sure. I love my Kangal.

Kangals are bred to look like "sheep" (face and coat color wise) so that wolfs aren't able to spot them in the flock to plan attack points.
These dogs are gentle giants. They never bark without a good reason. When two Kangals defend a flock against wolves, one watching the flock the other more in front line. They know wolves are smart, so are the Kangals.

Kangal dogs basically like an overweight, tough but kind and cute uncle with some serious military background, with abilities that rip apart bullies in seconds, but prefer not to. The who takes you everywhere you have fun and spoils you.
Most of stray dogs on streets are mixed kangals in Turkey, its obvious by their appereance, and if you somehow have chance to meet them, you will realize that they are well behaved and mature dogs, not threaten any innocents despite their size.
Really i admire them. Their personality makes them special.

We just recently added a Kangal to our farm, and he's by far the best dog I've ever owned. That's not to say just anyone should go out and buy one. I definitely think they're suited to certain environments. But he is so intelligent and loyal, right by my side at all times without a leash, even just as a puppy. He's calm, doesn't jump, and constantly scanning his environment for threats. He loves his goats and is gentle with our water fowl and poultry as well. He watches out for me, just as much as he looks out for his livestock. He is understandably hesitant of newcomers, but once he realizes they're not a threat, he love them too. Love the breed!

The Kangals are being bred in Namibia as protection for the goats raised by villagers that cheetahs prey upon. They are trained to just chase the cheetahs away, not to kill them. This program was initiated by the Cheetah Foundation because the villagers were killing the cheetahs (an endangered species) to protect their goats. This way the villagers can live with cheetahs in the area and still know the dogs will keep their goats safe.

When you told them to stop they would right away. When we were away nobody with bad intentions would bother to come to the ranch. They were aware of the the dogs. They were hardly known here in Alberta until recently but in recent years along with Pyrenees and Merema, Kangals have become very popular for guarding cattle as well as sheep.
My experience is they are perfect for people who want livestock protection without a dog that is hostile to visitors. But they can be unerving to people not used to dogs and particularly LGDs. They are more cat like and their cues can be confusing.
Here in the Alberta bush they are capable of holding their own against Black Bears and Cougars. They also kill coyotes. I find a good pairing is with a smaller and speedier breed as a companion. The smaller dog will bait a young coyote to chase it and then run towards the Kangal who will instinctively kill the coyote.
Not only are they good around people but they have a natural drive to socialize with livestock. They will greet cattle to gain their trust. A good Kangal will pair with the cattle to defend the calves. The lower ranking cows will encircled calves acting as a wall against a predator while the dominant matriarchs and bull will work with the dog to chase away or even attempt to kill a threat.
But most of the time they play with calves.

Kangal was originally called "Kangar", named after the Kangar Union of Oghuz, Cuman and Karluk Turks. They were the war mastiffs also used for shepherding flocks crucial to nomadic Turk survival. That's how they came with the Oghuz to Anatolia. Since Turks started using the phonetic letter "L" after becoming muslim, gradually Kangar became Kangal.

Years ago, I had a dear hunting buddy (Allah rahmet eylesin) living in the Adana area, who had a Kangal for protection on his small farm (beautiful animal). One day, my work colleague decided to go hunting with us; when we arrived at my friend's farm, the Kangal (for some reason) didn't like my colleague and literally bit and punctured the tire on his SUV. Needless to say my colleague did not hunt with us. A short time later, we discovered that my colleague was indeed a schmuck at work, stealing and embezzling...what did that Kangal know...?

My family back in Turkey had a pure breed Kangal from Sivas. That dog was very capable, smart, and very calm. They took him to special vet to get his ears cropped and kept him in the village working as a guard. Wolves and cotoyes could not come close to chickens nor sheeps. He was larger than the dogs you have.

Saw them for the first time in 1996. We were traveling by car between Kas and Anatalya . We saw a flock of sheep crossing the road and could then discern a large dog standing between our approaching car and the sheep. We moved forward to go through the sheep but the dog refused to move and slowly curled back his lips. We stopped. The flock moved through to graze and the dog backed off the road watching us the whole time. What a guardian! When we got to Antalya we saw some children and pups on a side street we were walking on and stopped. The young mother of the kids answered our questions about Kangal dogs as the mother of the pups watched us. The woman said we could sit and of course the pups approached us. The dog mum just watched us as we played with her pups. She knew we were no threat to her pups at all. Beautiful, strong incredibly loyal dogs.I saw one years later back in Australia and the owner said he had 4 dogs which protected his deer farm in the Yarra Valley.

There is a video of a ram attacking a shepherd. She had two dogs, a Kangal and an Australian shepherd. The video is shot by an approaching car, and you see the Kangal approach to take care of the car, but the Aussie goes to help too, that’s when the ram attacks the (human) shepherd, you can tell the Aussie knows he dropped the ball, when the shepherd takes a second hit from the ram.

Hey everyone, Turkish guy here. I want to point out some of the facts about Kangals and other Turkish breeds, there are a lot of misinformation lurking everywhere.
    1. Kangal dogs are indeed wolf killers, there are seperate lines specially designed to hunt and kill wolves which are called 'kurtçu kangal' which roughly translates to wolf hunter kangal. HOWEVER, wolves in Turkey are quite small compared to American and Tundra wolves.
    2. The famous black mask and curving tail is a MUST for the breed for the named as Kangal. Though, most Anatolian Sheperds and Malakli dogs also do carry these traits so its actually hard to identify them but not impossible. Kangals are smaller then Malakli dogs and Anatolian Sheperds. Their face is smooth from nose to neck and has a wolfish look. Anatolian sheperds and Malaklis look more like mastiffs.

Have a 2 Y.O. boy, and he's an incredible friend and guardian. He loves people, particularly children. He works hard at getting along with every other dog he comes in contact with. However, he has a violence of action I've never seen in a dog, and unfortunately if another big dog shows aggression towards him or one of us, he goes into a rage. Our acreage and close neighborhood are his territory, and he protects it. Coyotes, fox, racoons etc... are killed whenever he can get ahold of them and Hawks, Falcons and Eagles don't bother anymore because the barnyard animals are his flock. However, he was an absolute tyrant with needle sharp teeth as a young pup, knowing precisely what to do to solicit the most attention and interaction. He's still very playful and likes to bite when playing, knowing just how much he can get by with. The 18-month-old Granddaughter is the apple of his eye, watching her with Lazor focus and intensity, trying to play but frequently ends up lying next to her wherever she lands and sleeping at the foot of the crib. Children in the neighbor come out to see him sometimes when we walk, and it makes his day.
