    FYI; That little allen screw on the right side? That goes thru the strap swivel and tightens into the cage.

      Hi Scott. Thanks so much for the kind words! 🙏🏻 it really helps.
      Honestly I still don’t find it comfortable or easy to talk on camera and it takes a lot to actually press record still. The less you think about it the better I guess 😂
      Thank you for watching and good luck with the R5 rig 💪🏻🎥🤩

    Having so many choices these days to build your kit is fantastic. Your RIG looks great and functional well for you. I agree, you build your RIG "to work for YOU" and the filming situation that's called for on a given day. Even with Panasonics leading edge stabilization, the S5 is a small, very light camera, and if you're not going for an organic look, "you need to weigh it down". I have the same SmallRig cage on mine mostly for protection, plus a side handle, and have different ways to rig it for monitors & audio, however I will always prefer using a Gimbal, anywhere, anytime, unless I can't, or it doesn't work do to form factor or solely on a Tripod. I do about 60% film 40% photography so I also need my rig to be flexible without having to build it, then tear it down all the time using a quick release plate.
    Cheers

    I rigged out my R6 with all the bells and whistles from Small rig, same handles as you did plus the Ninja V arri mount, as well as the small rig rail system, I went with the Tilta Matte Box and Follow Focus, and the indie - pro V-Mount battery. It's amazingly balanced and with the Fal-Cam quick release plates it goes from Hand-Held to Stix to back to Hand-held before you can say Bob's your uncle. If I could copy and paste it you would see a photo of it right here.

    Excellent rig! Very similar to my own, only difference being rails with a little SmallRig pillow thingy at the back for balancing against the body when needed and a shotgun mic. Oh, and a SmallRig cable clamp for securing the HDMI so it won't get damaged over time.

    Great video, as always, very clear and I liked seeing how you had thought things through. My one question is: power. Would you/will you add external batteries? Is there a v mount option that works with that set up? I’m guessing that’s where the rails might come in..? Anyway, nice work 👌

      That’s right. At some point I’ll add the rails and then a battery clip for v mount in the future but for now I don’t feel like I need it. I like how compact this is and the length of shoots I do seem to be fine on these normal batteries.

    Finally hit the subscribe button on your channel after realizing how often you appear in my recommended! Thinking about the S5 for personal use once I hopefully land an upcoming job. One question Sam, how do filters such as a VND or Pro Mist work with the matte box? I'd opt for filters over the matte box but curious if both would work.

    • @SamHolland
      @SamHolland  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Corey. Thanks for the sub 🤩🙏🏻 … better late than never eh 😜😂
      With the smallrig mini matte box, you can still use the screw on filters BUT it is a little bit fiddly when you need to keep tweaking it during filming. With a matte box you would use the square/rectangle drop-in filters. It does become expensive but you don’t get the vignetting or any issues you may get with a thread on filter. I did a full video on the matte box here if you haven’t seen it - th-cam.com/video/xctCMZl6gFo/w-d-xo.html

    Don't bother with a follow focus the S5 has a very capable AF system or just use your hand, it's perfectly OK. Side handle doesn't really work for me, I found it didn't offer any extra stability not really. The matt box however has a couple of surprising benefits. Yes they do make your camera look like a boss and that's enough for most and it's a valid reason as well. But it also does stop unwanted light getting into the lens, the French flag also stops rain getting onto the lens when it's raining. Get a half cage as well not a full one. Much better. Just my humble opinion.
