Thanks for watching! 👍🏻 UPDATE: Keep in mind that I did run those tests with the 24-105mm f4 (slow lens), that was the only AF lens I had back then. With faster apertures, like with the F1.8/F2 lenses, the AF is okish if there's enough light. Often the AF can't follow the subject when the depth of field is too narrow (tested on the first generation of Lumix S cameras). I don't know anything about the AF performances of the S5 Mark II and IIx.

We're using an S1H for a big, long doc, and this tweak means I can do the one-man-band thing with confidence. Once the focus is locked in, it stays. There was one guy we interviewed recently who really put this to the test... .always moving and turning his head, tons of back and forth... and while the focus lost him at times... it's always returned, and still nearly 95% of the interview is usable. I'm using speed 0, and sensitivity -3. Grazie di cuore... e ciao dal nord (veneto)!

I'm sure Panasonic's engineers are highly capable, but somewhere between designing all this and writing user instructions, things get lost. I did this first time I got my S5 and yes, it works. I do this also with my Canon to touch to focus. It's just natural for me when I see a box that is yellow to confirm it so it's green! Nothing new for me and I've always loved the auto focus on my S5. Love your videos!

I'm surprised nobody knew that. Although I didn't know I could confirm it with just a joystick button thats pretty cool. I still have mixed results even with AF Confirm. If you're planning to using it as a vlog camera when you're always looking directly towards the lens the performance seems fine. However, when I used them at weddings and interviews where the subject isn't always looking at the camera and a lot of head movement I still get focus hunting, unfortunately. I still enjoy using my camera but the autofocus is still not that great for certain situations.
Hey Michael thank you for watching! I've uploaded another video with more samples, where I constantly confirm the subject tracking when the camera loses the subject... it's far to be perfect but I find it usable. Anyway I much prefer to work with real manual focus lenses... I've made this video for the fans of AF 😜
I have been doing this from when I first got mine, BUT I don't do it the way the you do.... I ALWAYS have the the 'half press shutter' ONLY enabled for focus confirm/exposure set. When shooting in a manual video mode, as any good film-maker should be, I only ever use my Red button to start/end filming, or the app on my phone. Nice video btw. :)
It's working good enough with native Panasonic lenses...I've no idea if it's working properly with non native lenses, sorry. Let us know your experience with non native lenses please!
The camera conspiracies guy talks about the Panny ‘tap to focus’ trick all the time, but you explained it better I think! Still I see some out of focus moments and pulsing at times…but you did say ‘good autofocus’ not ‘great like Canon or Sony’ haha. It’s too bad too- as a manual focusing S1H owner, I think Panasonic’s cameras would be the best on the market if they would just get on the phase detect train!
Ok, if I got it right, you mean you touch the where you want to focus the subject to track. To focus seems like that's what it is. If so this doe snot seem to be an issue, simple to do do ths ton my phone alot.
@@LucaBono.Studio I can’t seem to get the confirmation box on the GH5 - what type of autofocus are you using - face tracking, subject tracking?? Maybe the GH5 just operates differently.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis I use the face tracking AF option on the S1/S5, I don't have the GH5...but some users reported that this system is working for them as well
@@LucaBono.Studio I have the confirmation box in the regular tracking mode on the G7 and GH5 by half pressing the shutter button as some people have suggested, but as far as I know - that is just the regular tracking mode on each camera. I’ll fool around a bit more and see if I can engage it in face tracking.
@Dan Correia no - there doesn’t seem to be a way to lock in tracking when using face detect. It just does the regular face tracking. And once the regular tracking mode is engaged, it works as usual. So, in effect - these are just the regular modes on the GH5 and the autofocus is its usual unreliable self. What a lot of commenters on here are suggesting with the micro 4/3 cameras appears to me to just be engaging the regular face or object tracking modes. The S series may be different as Luca demonstrated.
What if I don't have a subject to track, but only want it to focus in the object im fitting closer to? Also, I can't enable the AFC rocker as it says me to revert to AFS; is that expected.
Hi Luca, I have to decide between a7iii and S5, my heart says s5 but I also want to use the camera for filming family and kids. Someone said That S5 would be a nightmare to use for recoding running kids, would you agree.
Hi Sari! I think that the Sony A7III, or Canon R6, will be a better buy for you...the AF with the Lumix S cameras is not that great for fast actions, sadly. Thanks for watching and have great family moments!
Ciao Luca! Grazie mile for the tip! Do you know how it is using sigma ef lenses? The MC-21 adaptor works well with the autofocus? Or is necessary to used lumix lenses?
Ciao Diego! I don't think this will work with the sigma mc-21, it doesn't support the C-AF...I would use only Lumix lenses at the moment, the native Sigma or Leica lenses aren't fast with autofocus on Panasonic cameras.
Does that also fix the focus hunting too? Hunting is the worst thing in this system and gets even worse when I slow the footage down!happy to see your answer
@@LucaBono.Studio Per precisare, hai usato il riconoscimento faccia o il tracking? Con la S5 + tracking mi sempra che confermare non fa bisogno . Mi segue automaticamente.
Luca - Wow - no one else has picked this up - Lumix is an often maligned brand because of autofocus but a lot of times it’s user error and not understanding how these cameras operate - early focus modes where mostly aligned to photography especially the AFF and AFC - with AFC noted in the manual as being for video - now with the gh6 we have a more video focused product with only 3 modes with AFF being removed which is why it perhaps doesn’t perform as well in fast action photography - just subscribed to your channel cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
Hi Luca, your tests are amazing and unique. I would like to use the GH6 in AF and I would like to use it to shoot everything, without ever taking it off. I shoot V-Log, 4K, (ALL-I 600Mbps), 10bit, 4:2:2, 50p and I'd like to ask 2 questions please: 1) I put the level on AFC. I would like to use AF in everyday life. It annoys me when he occasionally stutters to seek focus. How would you configure Sensitivity and Speed? 2) When I go to Menu/AF Mode and use "Full Area", why do I have to use the focus handle like when I use "1 Area"? Thanks for your advice.
Thanks for doing this, definitely more usable even at 24 fps with this trick! Is it just me or is there also a noticeable difference between performance in super35 crop mode and full frame mode? It seems quite a bit more reliable in crop mode
Thank you for watching buddy! Yes the AF will work even better if you follow the tips and tricks from this video here: th-cam.com/video/PGqX3jqYOi0/w-d-xo.html
I've seen a few reviews to confirm your assumption. Crop mode outperforms Sony A7iii in autofocus. That is how good it is. Guess the processing power can't handle the info from fullframe and autofocus well at the same time.
I just got the S5 today. But, I am trying the joystick approach and it just creates a box with arrows on the sides. What function do you set the joystick to? In the menu, there are four settings for the joystick. 1. Defocus Movement - (which pops up the box with arrows.) 2. Fn 3. Menu 4. OFF Which setting do I use to get the lines on each side to "lock" the AF?
Hey buddy, congratulations for your new camera! I just left the default setting in the joystick...I've only to press to confirm the AF. You can also use the touchscreen to confirm the subject
@@LucaBono.Studio I tried that, too. When I touch the screen, it gives me the box with arrows/triangles. I don't get the lines that you mention. Maybe it's the AF settings?
@@LucaBono.Studio I found that when I use AF in the Tracking mode, that I got those lines. I shot a test with Tracking, and there was very little pulsing in the background bokeh. I will post my experience in the coming days on my channel. It seems that Panasonic may have finally solved the AF. Although, like many others, I would like them to look into pursuing Phase Detection AF as we find in Sony and Canon cameras. PDAF is the most consistent AF I've seen. I actually have the Sony ZV-1 which I use on some of my TH-cam reviews, etc. The AF is spot on. Thanks again for this video.

Haha how a working AF can make someone happy! Awesome! Working with the S1 since the beginning, and in photo mode it also makes a difference. Maybe I should give video AF a try now, well done!
Can someone help me? AF is giving me a box with arrows/triangles If I press the AF button.... Settings are: C1 AF set to C or S When I press the AF button nothing happens, instead if I play with the joystick I got the box with arrows/triangles. Thanks...
Well, it worked, but it is very cumbersome to reach on the back of the camera, find the joystick and press it on every recording. There must be a better way, especially for person vlogging themself alone?
Please please confirm.. DOES THIS WORK WITH EF GLASS VIA THE SIGMA MC21 EF-L MOUNT? I have both the S1H and S5.. with a range of Sigma ART glass.. (I know.. I know.. I bought into the Sigma EF glass as; 1: I got the S1H early when the L glass wasn't easily available and too expensive. 2: My other stills camera is a Canon.? Auto focusing on the Lumix S cameras is HELL! via the EF - L mount. PLUS in record the focus assist (zoom in) doesn't work on camera.. so using my ext monitor to check focus is equally hard as it's HDMI connection for Panasonic is lame and painfully delayed.. racking focus LIVE is near impossible. So again.. does this auto focus setting work for EF glass via a Sigma MC21 EF-L mount???
Hey mate! Sorry but I've no clue about it...I don't have the Sigma MC21 or Canon lenses. I think you should buy a true manual focus lens, so you can train the muscle memory of focus pulling. Cheers!
Will this work with the Eye tracking option? If not, does it do a good job getting the eyes in focus? That's my biggest complaint with my S1 and S1R, sharp eyebrows and slightly fuzzy pupils.
Yes it will work better if you confirm the tracking, I'm not 100% sure for the eyebrows because I use the Summicron R 90mm for portraits...I'll let you know

Luca!!! Thank you soooo much for this buddy!
You're welcome and thanks for stopping by! Cheers!
Thanks Mark! Cheers!
Luca, love your jokes, love your accent ❤️
Thanks mate! 🫶🏻
This is really great. Thanks Luca. But what about in the 1 area and 1 area + modes. Is there a way to lock your subject on?
Hey Toby! Thank you so much!
With 1 area AF you don't need to confirm anything 😉
love the accent brother good vid!
Thank you so much Jae!
Does this apply to budget Canon lenses, or Sigma lenses? Or only Leica ones?
It's working good enough with native Panasonic lenses...I've no idea if it's working properly with non native lenses, sorry. Let us know your experience with non native lenses please!
the autofocus is always better with native glass. If you can afford the S Pro lenses, get those
The camera conspiracies guy talks about the Panny ‘tap to focus’ trick all the time, but you explained it better I think!
@@mtbboy1993 Yes, I believe that tapping the screen does the same thing as pushing the button described in Luca's video.
Hi, is there a setting where you can turn auto focus off as I don't need it for my videos ? Cheers
I liked and subscribed before I even watched the video just from pure excitement!! Video was awesome also!
ahahaha Thank you Quentin!
Omg I never used this in 3 years of gh5 usage. Now with the S5 I will try this now haha. Thanks mate
Thanks for watching Paul! Have fun!
Great job Luca - I will give it a shot on the GH5!!
Thank you for watching Mark!
Then you should use the tracking box, in the AF modes
Yes the focus hunting is way less with this method, if the camera keep tracking you after the confirmation...
Thank you for watching Alexis!
Grande Luca, mi hai salvato!
Ahahah! Di niente!
You are a legend mate 😳👍👍👍🔥
Thanks mate!✌
Ciao Luca, bel video, sei forte 😉
Provero stasera con la mia S5, ciao.
Grazie Peppe! Fammi sapere come va!
Nice! I am going to pick up either the s1h or s5 and so this gets me pumped! Thanks dude
Thanks Anson! Get the S1H if you can, it's a much better camera than the S5
@@LucaBono.Studio Which one has better AF?
Bravo Luca👍🏻
Thank you for watching Robert!
Thanks for this video. One more question - how does it work with the auto focus speed options?
Hi, I left the autofocus speed and sensitivity to default and it's working good enough for me! Thanks for watching!
Any advice for people who filming sport ? my subjects are not so slow to catch :D
Hi! I don't film sport...but if I did it, I would have changed camera system. There are better options out there. Cheers!
WOW looking forward to trying this tomorrow. Looks good. I use gh6
Hope you enjoy it!
Thanks for your support Barry! Cheers!
How i can film myself with s1? In continuous af?
Hi Luca, your tests are amazing and unique. I would like to use the GH6 in AF and I would like to use it to shoot everything, without ever taking it off. I shoot V-Log, 4K, (ALL-I 600Mbps), 10bit, 4:2:2, 50p and I'd like to ask 2 questions please:
1) I put the level on AFC.
Got to try that on my GH5ii! Grazie mille!
Thanks for watching mate!
1. Defocus Movement - (which pops up the box with arrows.)
2. Fn
3. Menu
4. OFF
Which setting do I use to get the lines on each side to "lock" the AF?
Hey buddy, congratulations for your new camera! I just left the default setting in the joystick...I've only to press to confirm the AF. You can also use the touchscreen to confirm the subject
@@LucaBono.Studio I tried that, too. When I touch the screen, it gives me the box with arrows/triangles. I don't get the lines that you mention. Maybe it's the AF settings?
Send me a picture on Instagram @lucabono.studio
@@AllThingsFilm1 I got the same issue.... how did you solve that? Thanks.
haha awesome video buddy! I've enabled the 'confirm tracking' a few times without realising it, but I didn't know that it helps with the AF performance! So pumped to try this out!
P.S - you're a funny guy, keep making vids, I love em !
Thank you Josh! Yeah! The tracking confirmation helps a lot, I never really used AF in the past because I'm used with my cine lenses...but now I will use it more often!
Man, I've this problem of the real time translation with the english that keep me 100% concentrated...I'm more funny when I talk italian ahahah
Did it work? Can you make a test about it ? I don't want to shoot 60fps to get good af. I want to know how tracking a moving subject works with the camera on a gimbal following the subject..
@@jackhkf1419 the whole video was filmed in AF-C. By the way, for what you want to do....you don't need AF at all.
@@LucaBono.Studio Hi Luca! Can you watch Brandon Li's Motivated and Unmotivated camera movement video please? I would like to know if those shots were possible on the S5!
@@jackhkf1419 hey buddy, yes it's possible but you should use other autofocus settings to achieve perfect results...I'll make a little tutorial about it soon, it's complex to explain it with text without visual references.
lol what a small trick that changes a lot for the better! the key thing is to keep experimenting with our gear!
Thanks for watching!
Hello,thanks you!Which memory card(speed of writing) to use for 4K 60 Fps?
Hi Will, I use normal Sandisk V30 SD cards and I've zero problems with them.
@@LucaBono.Studio ok thanks
Hi Luca, what a great video and great tip. Will try it out over the WE with my S1H and the 16-35 mm f4 lens. BTW, does this only work for faces or for regular objects, too? Love your joy in your face at the end of the video.
Thank you buddy! Honestly I never tried it with objects...I use a different technique that works well for objects. I'll make a tutorial about it soon, you're not the only one asking this question 😉
Much better, although I notice a bit of pulsing yet, greatly improved! Thanks!
Thank you for watching Jaime!
Thanks. Going to try this tomorrow.
Thanks for watching Kumaran! Let me know if it's working good enough for you!
@@LucaBono.Studio hey i tried this and it does work, fantastic, thanks for the tip
Ciao Luca come stai , the one mystery I can not seem to solve is how to uncouple AE from the shutter button ?!? For some reason the camera locks AE when pushing the button. On my Sony I can uncouple this so I can lock focus with the shutter button but AE is freely adjusting at all times. Any Idea - I looked at the menue 1001 times -I studied the manual - I asked people - mi dispiace Luca, sono stupido ? :)
Haha how a working AF can make someone happy! Awesome! Working with the S1 since the beginning, and in photo mode it also makes a difference. Maybe I should give video AF a try now, well done!
Thank you for your feedback Andoni! I didn't really tried this technique in photography because my main problem was in video ;)
How to config this in lumix gh6? In my gh6 dont appear the box when i press the joystick 😔
What about using the touchscreen? Does it track after you touch the yellow box?
Can someone help me?
AF is giving me a box with arrows/triangles If I press the AF button....
Settings are:
C1
AF set to C or S
When I press the AF button nothing happens, instead if I play with the joystick I got the box with arrows/triangles.
Thanks...
good job Luca! :D
Thank you buddy!
Now I'm wondering if I can do this with Lumix Tether :)
I'll let you know!
Bella prova!
how can i confirm this? cant find it
Tap on the screen the yellow box or click the joystick
Well, it worked, but it is very cumbersome to reach on the back of the camera, find the joystick and press it on every recording. There must be a better way, especially for person vlogging themself alone?
That's why I've bought the S5 ahahah. Cheers!
@@LucaBono.Studio isn’t it still the same? What do you do use the Lumix sync app or the button on the front of camera?
Fantastic hack! Thank you.
Thank you for watching Shaka! 🤟🏻
Nice video mate 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thank you buddy!
Please please confirm.. DOES THIS WORK WITH EF GLASS VIA THE SIGMA MC21 EF-L MOUNT?
I have both the S1H and S5.. with a range of Sigma ART glass..
(I know.. I know.. I bought into the Sigma EF glass as;
1: I got the S1H early when the L glass wasn't easily available and too expensive.
Yes it will work better if you confirm the tracking, I'm not 100% sure for the eyebrows because I use the Summicron R 90mm for portraits...I'll let you know
only works with leica l lenses right?
No, only with Lumix S lenses or native Lumix lenses for m43 cameras
Would be interesting with which sensitivity it works best now...
It depends on what you're filming... generally speaking, lowering the af sensitivity and increasing the af speed will give better tracking autofocus.
Great video thank you got my subscription 👍🏻
Thanks mate, I really appreciate! Let me know your feedback with your camera and lens combination after you tried it!
No, I thank you.Amazing trick
Thank you for watching my friend!
Did everyone notice that the 24-105 f/4 has almost NO FOCUS BREATHING and as it focuses, it is VERY SMOOTH, too. I know Sony and Canon have "better" autofocus but I don't find their AF as smooth as that of Panasonic lenses on Lumix cameras.
Yes, the focus breathing is not existing in this lens 🤟🏻
Thank you for watching!
Posso usare questa funzione per mettere due volti in contemporanea?
