    I find it hilarious that the ship of 'dorky smart nice boy' and 'hot strong badass girl' has literally been with us as a ship since the concept of shipping has existed to the point that the fucking Goddess of shipping was the first to like it. That's how you know a ship dynamic has staying power.

    Awww that was actually like, a really sweet ending. I think it’s fitting that Atalanta ends up with a guy who knowingly acknowledges how capable she is, she realizes this, and elects to be with him. Also, their “bang in Zeus’s temple” ending is peak newly wed nonsense and I’m here for it.

    Headcanon: the bear who adopted Atalanta is Callisto, the nymph follower of Artemis who was seduced by Zeus (while disguised by Artemis, which has created a lot of speculation on whether this meant Artemis and Callisto were lesbian lovers) and after getting pregnant, got turned into a bear (sources differ on whether it was Zeus, Hera or Artemis who did this, all having their own reasons).
    My headcanon goes further: first, after discovering Callisto was pregnant, Artemis believed the nymph intentionally broke her vows and banished her from the group, before going off to Mount Olympus to cry to Daddy Zeus about how Callisto had betrayed her. This was how Zeus found out that the nymph in question was pregnant - with HIS child... and Hera was able to deduce from his expression what was what, and this lead to Artemis realizing the truth, that Callisto had been tricked and technically never betrayed her.
    It then became a race between the three gods to find Callisto. Zeus and Artemis found her first. Zeus took his new son, Arcas, and hid him away from Hera, while Artemis, thinking quickly, turned Callisto into a bear. At first, she claimed that it was to punish the nymph - but she only said this to soothe Hera. Artemis' real reason was to give Callisto an excuse to re-join the huntresses: since she was no longer a virgin, it would be sacrilege of her to join their group. BUT, if she were a bear, a wild animal with no cause to follow any vows of chastity, then of course she could join them!
    So Callisto happily rejoined the huntresses, happy to be back with her friends (and potential lesbian partner), although she was still sad about being parted from her baby... and that's where Atalanta comes in. Since the foundling is a girl, she's completely eligible to join Artemis and her huntresses. Thus Callisto has found comfort in taking care of a baby.
    So yeah, Atalanta got to grow up with both a bear and Artemis as mother figures. Also, Artemis never had Atalanta take any "virginity vow", just in case... and that worked out when Atalanta's father claimed her and insisted she marry.
    I also read this on wikipedia regarding Atalanta and Hippomenes getting turned into lions: "This view has been criticized, however. In her book The Amazons: Lives and Legends of Warrior Women across the Ancient World, Adrienne Mayor argues there is no evidence to support the notion that the Ancient Greeks believed male and female lions could not engage in sexual intercourse. Rather, Mayor contends the transformation of Atalanta and her lover into lions occurred at a moment of emotional and sexual bliss, which can be interpreted as divine sympathy for a couple who defied traditional Greek gender roles, and thus turning them into lions enabled the lovers to hunt and mate together for all eternity outside of Greek society, which would not have accepted their relationship."
    So my headcanon also includes Atalanta and Hippomenes as pet lions to Artemis. The goddess can't accept men into her group, but she has no problem with male animals being around.
    This means that Artemis has a pet bear and two pet lions. :D

      @Mech299 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      An excellent theory! Punctured just slightly by the fact that Artemis was the Virgin Goddess of Hunting. It's not that men weren't allowed, just that men usually lacked the self control to avoid chasing after the fairer sex, according to the myths.
      It's why Hippolytus was so noteworthy, he was a hunter of Artemis by choice, and perfectly allowed. He only died because a queen tried to seduce him, was rebuffed, and her husband got Poseidon to kill him. And given that Artemis was the *VIRGIN* Goddess, her having a lesbian lover is equally as antithetical to her existence. More likely Calysto was just an extremely good friend and that's was what motivated her to help Calysto out. But her no longer being a virgin, even if it wasn't by choice, means that she couldn't be part of the hunting group anymore.
      Artemis has been VERY strict about that, as evidenced by how she turned Actaeon into a Deer just for accidentally seeing Artemis naked.

      @@Mech299 Thank you, and you made some excellent points yourself! Although I read that in those ancient times, "virgin" simply meant an unmarried woman, which would leave some wiggle room open for lesbianism - but that's been "scholarly debate," haha.

    I remember reading a version of the myth where Meleager and Atlanta were actually in love with each other so she was very torn up about him dieing. Hippomene’s reminded her of him when he was hunched over and hiding the apples because that was the same way Meleager looked before he died. The apples also brought up some memories and Atlanta either decided that this was the person she was going to marry and purposely lost or.... was too distraught to actually finish the race.

When the golden apples are dropped she stops to pick them up to bring to Meleager's grave because she thinks he'll like them but then the surface of the apples show her memories of better times and the last one shows Meleager's death in front of her and she's so sad she can't finish the race and weeps from the painful memories while Hippomenes walks towards her with a big goofy grin on his face after he won the race. Oh, and some hunters murder her brother bears.

    While I don't disagree that the Greeks were extremely sexist, there is at least -one- more Ancient Greek figure who is capable of being badass and posessing two x-chromosomes- an entire tribe of them, actually- the Amazons. Also, the thing I love most about her, is every vallentiens day you can get chocolates from your female servants *And Astolfo* Or Give chocolate to your male servants *and Astolfo*. Atalante's is Literally an apple covered in chocolate with two arrows sticking out of it, and she out right says 'Here, keep it and feel free to use it in a foot race. Dang it. Why did Meleager, the one classy male hunter of the group, half to get murdered. I was really shipping him and Atlanta because of their relation with each other in the story. But of course, he just had to die and leave Atlanta up for grabs to a man who didn't seem to have very much in common with her. Even if he lived through, it may not have worked out. He was apparently married to Cleopatra, so that kind of a problem.

    • @blacksage2375
      @blacksage2375 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well yeah Greek and Roman mythology are not really the same thing, and its not clear she's actually a myth per se so much as a creation of Vergil specifically in the Aeneid.
      Also there's the butt kicking part, like Camilla seems like a gloss on the the Amazons... but like the Amazons doesn't seem to quite get to actually achieve something.

    • @NapaCat
      @NapaCat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Camilla, Cyrene, Atalanta, the Amazons; the female hero trio + the matriarchal warrior nation!

    • @fuzzybee3788
      @fuzzybee3788 ปีที่แล้ว

      It feels like Camilla is inspired directly by Atalanta, one is raised by a bear, the other suckled by a mare. They both outclass their male aquaintances in hunting and in either combat (with Camilla's Aristeia) or racing. Then they both get misogynistically prescribed the supposed feminine trait of being attracted to shiny things as Camilla gets shot by an arrow after being distracted by a dude in shiny armour. Also I would add Medea (my favourite psychopath) to the list off those who get to kick ass, although whether she can be considered heroic is somewhat dubious

    Mallegar and Hippomenes were chill dudes with Atalanta being a girl in this time and all. Nice to see not all the guys were all stereotypically against her, as she was clearly skilled and capable. Myths that often see the guys as dumb or ignorant even when faced with a battle-able woman kinda get old when it's like, there are literal female deities out here, is it too much of a stretch to believe some women could be like them too?
