  • Sure, you've probably gotten angry before. But have you ever gotten gouge-out-your-own-eye-and-turn-it-into-a-monstrous-goddess-of-vengeance angry? Odds are low, I think.
    The moral of the story is: respect the elderly if possible, or failing that, simply remove the concept of age.

      ***** The myths say that after Ra was born from Nūn, he was blind. He filled his mouth with water and spat out Shu and Tefnût. He then made them go chase the darkness away and created an eye to monitor his children's movements. After the eye returns it sees that Ra has another eye in his face. The first eye becomes very jealous of the second eye, so Ra gives it more power. The first eye is the sun and the second eye is the moon.

    • @pettylisa5599

      Eye of Horus - crafted from moonlight by Thoth and Hathor after Set ripped out Horus' eyes
      Eye of Ra - represents the moon and sun, he ripped out the sun-eye to keep an EYE on his kids, Tefnut and Shu.

    • @nocturne2029
      @nocturne2029 7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      There are some conflicting sources but the eye of Horus looks different and is either Horus' eye which was ripped out in his battle with Set or something created after his battle with Set. It's used as a charm for protection, which is neat because almost every crazy-well-preserved artifact found in Egyptian archaeological sites features an eye of Horus. I also think it looks cooler. Cool eh?

    • @goetiagirl
      @goetiagirl 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      ok. to set the record straight. theres 2 eyes of horus, right and left...and according wich one you draw it has a different meaning, related to the qualities bestowed upon the sun (right eye) and the moon (left eye). Theres 2 very different ways to read mythology from Egypt, you can read the roman interpretations from the schollars that were sent to gather folklore info back in the day...or from the ancient cult directly, kemetic.

      It would likely be a video on how aesthetics lead to popularity/ cultural appropriation. There isn't a ton on Anubis, but he is a god of mummification and prominently preserved in the most famous discoveries. His figure is very striking and evocative, so much that everyone from YuGiOh to League of Legends to The Mummy Returns rips off his look without any of his substance (posers... Looking at you "Susan".) You can think whatever you want about cultural appropriation, as there are pros and cons to it, but Anubis' modern renditions kind of takes the cake in terms of both awareness of the subject vs cool factor and marketing vs bastardizing the source material.
      (Yes he is my fav Egyptian god and yes 6th grade me threw a fit when I was finally allowed to watch the Mummy movies and saw what they did to my jackal headed mummy maker. No one else cared about such blasphemy; god of war indeed...)

    the worship of bast and sekhmet is generally a result of the seperation there was during the period when egypt was divided between two kingdoms generally referred to as upper and lower egypt with one having bast as their major feline goddess and the other sekhmet. both feline goddesses were highly respected and worshiped so when egypt was unified they both remained as part of their pantheons (I said pantheons and not pantheon because egyptian mythology = weird) with bast's animal becoming the domestic cat and sekhmet's being lions this allowed the continued worship of both as separate goddesses.

    You mentioned at the end of the video that there might be additional symbolism regarding the Eye of Ra, and I think there actually is. When I initially saw the eye and you calling it the Eye Of Ra, I got very confused, because to me it had always been the Eye of Horus. The Eye Of Horus is an important symbol because it represents healing. It comes from the myth in which Horus killed his uncle Set in revenge for killing his father Osiris. In the battle, Horus killed his uncle, but lost an eye, which was healed later on by the ibis-headed god of writing and medicine, Thoth. I'm unsure if you covered this part of the myth when you covered Osiris, Isis and Set, but that's how the story ends there. It's actually very interesting that this symbolism is present in two different myths, and perhaps says a lot about Egyptian mythos as a whole? Just a thought.

    • @nocturne2029
      @nocturne2029 7 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      The eye of Horus actually looks a little different than they eye of Ra. It's the one that is shaped more like the actual eyes in Egyptian art and has an eyebrow, a line extending the lash line (very popular in Egypt) and a little line under the pupil, connected to a curly line under the whole of the eye. I think it looks cooler than the eye of Ra, personally.

      True. Tried Wiki'ing it, and their cosmology is a HUGE acid trip. Apparently The eye of Ra is the same as the eye of Horus, because Ra IS Horus, except when Horus is Osiris brother, that is when he is not Osiris son. Also, there's two different Horus's if they are not just the same as well. Now, the eye of Ra is apparently not a depiction as much as the actual female goddess of Sekhmet, except when shes Bast, or Hathor, or Wadjet. That is when one or more of these are not the same goddess, or the eye of Horus, or on the crown of Egypt as the cobra. The depiction in the video is apparently The eye of Ra AND the eye of Horus AND Wadjet. Because they are all the same thing, because reasons....I think.....I'm confused now...

  • @solareagle1802

    I think it's very interesting that both Odin and Ra are both missing an eye, heads of their own respective pantheons, and sacrificed the now missing eye for great power. I bet there is an ancient connection between the two, even if it is now potentially lost to time.

Also, the Eye of Ra is often confused with the Eye of Horus, which is also super cool and was used mainly as a charm for protection (which even some archaeologists admit has a crazy frequent history of being found on really well-preserved stuff). I'm kinda blanking on what the Eye of Ra was used for, however. Also! Sekhmet, alongside being a goddess of badassery, is also closely associated with menstruation! Yay!

    So I just got back from Wikipedia and I'm a little befuddled on something. There seems to be a confusion between the Eye of Horus and the Eye of Ra. Both are the seeing organs of sky gods, but one is the familiar symbol while the other is the angry man eater, respectively. The two eyes seem to kinda be associated, but I thought I'd note that they're distinct entities. Also funny is that the Wikipedia images for Ra and Horus are just the same guy with a different hat.

      I personally prefer the way the eye of Horus looks, and also prefer its meaning. You know they'd put it on things for protection too? In fact, archeologists keep finding it on really well preserved artifacts. I believe they'd also put charms of it in their hair for protection (much like the fish charms children would wear for protection from drowning) but I could be wrong.

    Myths always amused me, especially the god's specialties. "Goddess of war and vengeance" - straightforward enough. Then "goddess of war and protection" - quite logical, since its the same goddess who got back on her medicine.
    Greeks weren't as logical though - they had two different war gods: Ares, god of war and war and Athena, goddess of war and wisdom (which is quite baffling, since wisdom in times of war is more often considered cowardice than not), AND, the fun part, goddess of victory being a separate... er, goddess. Kind of like those people who show up at the end of the group project and take all of the credit.
    But my personal favourite would be Hermes, god of trade, thievery and delivery service.

Ares was associated with hatred and bloodshed. Ares also had a few positive traits as well. He hated people who mistreated prisoners of war, and he was one of the least sexist of the gods, never raping anyone and becoming the father and patron deity of the Amazons.
