Great tips from the master to guys like me - an enthusiastic DIY'er with no skill! Makes life so much more easy - wish we'd had TH-cam and guys like you around 50 years ago. But then, my vocabulary wouldn't have got so varied!

That's a beefy wall Justin, like all the tips, sagging line and tingle to bring it up and the flushing joints stopping the block courses showing through the rendering👍 Hope your helper recovers asap a man down make the rest have to work harder to make up..💪

Justin We had a tongue and groove cavity wall insulation trade marked aero board in Ireland ( it was made from polystyrene beads ) kingspan took them over . We used to use a bit of it in the hand to wipe down the block walls , it would take every little snot off the wall and leave them smooth as silk prior to plastering way better result than rubbing a trowel over them. You can still do it with the new rigid board insulation if you remove the foil covering first.

Good tip not jointing blockwork if its being rendered, some people jyst dont get it.The spotboard stands i use from Brickiebits are good you can get the skis for the top to take two scaffold boards so you have a platform the right height to load out on.

    • @brickrightbuildinglandscaping

Nice job, helps me with my up and coming garage self build, never laid a block before, but cannot not wait to get stuck in, prep is the key I think and triple check everything as you go .... keep that line tight and take your time .... Question ? ... My garage will be 6 metre x 3.8 metre at 2.8 metre high, block on side, single skin, flat roof, would i need piers at any point ? Thank you.

Just about to start a project in the garden replacing wooden sleeper retaining walls with blocks laid on their sides as per your wall. Feeling slightly nervous to be honest. Will that wall be fully rendered or will it have some sort of coping stone or detail on the top? As mine is a garden wall I’m looking for a hard wearing option to cap the wall that will be resilient to people stepping onto it (I’m rendering the sides).
