All the info should be on the video. Set your fall for your patio so that the bubble on the level touches the line . Then once you achieve this level .set your eco drains so they are about 5mm lower than the patio level so the water doesn't hold but instead falls into the drain .hope that makes sense to you and good luck 👍
Another really helpful video! How many of those 600 slabs can you get out of a mix Justin? And also how long a working time do you have on a mix roughly before it’s no good anymore? Thanks
Maybe about 3 tiles or so never really count em . As for the time with the cement it will vary on the weather condition but say 14 degrees by around an hour or but you can just turn it over in the barrow to fluff it up
I remember the issue with the levels at the front Justin, but done a good just as always. On another note, what’s your go to blade for the rubi bridge saw ? The last rubi blade I had wasn’t that impressed with and pricey too !
Using free blade from rubi at mo and its brilliant to be honest best blade ive had . Normally use the Henry's blades at elite stone tools but gonna try phil from pulvex blades who i have been told are very good .issue with rubi blades is they arnt cheap over £100 which isn't great is it mark👍
Hi just got a tradesmen to price my patio, I've got all materials there porcelain slabs, sharp sand 2 1/2 bags, and the foundation was already layed, from previous builder he never returned. However this tradesmen doesn't want to use the sharp sand says it won't stick to slabs, but surely that's why slurry is used, just like to no your opinion. Lastly as someone who's layed some 2x2 council slabs in the past, would porcelain just be too difficult, this question is open do the guys, however if they're too busy, any guys with experience I could use some advice.
To be honest as a builder of 35 years I wouldn't use just sharp alone . My go to mix is a ratio of 50/50 sharp and soft sand to bite with a shovel of hydrated lime. I never understood the reason to prime the slabs ! If they are really dry just water with a roller. Sticks like SHxT. No come backs ever . And always tap the slab just off centre like a clock face and never the edge's or corners as it will rock!!
Excellent demonstration on mixing the cement Fray!! Would the mix be exactly the same for using on bricks/blocks, or building a natural stone wall? Would you use sharp sand or builders sand? Also, would it be made wetter? Or just about as you did in the video?
@brickrightbuildinglandscaping thanks!! Love your videos!! I think I have pretty much watched every one. Keep up the good work, guys!!! Fray, you're coming on in leaps and bounds. Both with your work and in front of the camera. Awesome team!

Hi can you tell me what the paving primer is I live in Canada and the yard Im buying the porcelain from do not sell it I have accounts with tile adessive stores I asked them they didn't know either is it just thin set tile adhesive with more water added ?
@stevehunt9114 Hi Steve It's called paving primer here in wales most merchants sell it . If you can't get it use and SBR mixed with cement to create your own primer. Good luck mate 🏴🇨🇦
@stevehunt9114 it's a product when painted on to the back of a slab when mixed with cement enhances the adhesion to the mortar bed .so the same as a paving primer
Lol was sunny last week in wales had to do work in my mums garden pity she's about 2 hours from cardiff or I'd tell her to ring you guys to do patio for her the local workers did a bodge up for her shed base she had to have taken down as her shed was 2 foot too high cos they didn't wanna do any digging 😔
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping and you think as good as the newer marketed "primers"?? Always got SBR and don't like spending more money on primers 😄 Great vids! Cheers!!
I notice some guys setup a tile each side to use to run a string line off and lay to. Youre laying just with a level, do you not struggle whem the porcelain tiles are not completely flat, often they are bowed slightly (bellied)
Dear Brickrighters, I found that a paint roller is very fast, comfortable and accurate to spread the slurry. I did so for my own 60m2 patio last week. Best regards from Germany Wolfram
Aco with an A not Eco drains Justin 😂 small squegee Justin for primer, you’ll never look back mate, just the wooden handle with the black rubber on them
The mic sounding good mate! Yes! Fluffing up your bed is how I do it on a wet bed! Seen a lot lately about not putting the point of your trowel through the bed, absolute bull 💩 Good tip on reading the level with pressure, not easy to explain One thing though…..wtf is an Eco drain 🤣🙈
Hi you kept saying the very first slab was level, is It perfectly level, or is it touching the bubble for the beginning of your fall, total novice I'm afraid.
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping Thanks for quick reply, so are you kind of splitting the slab into two sections, eg, the top section of the slab is level, and the lower section begins to slant, is that correct, Thanks.
Hi since you've been great answering all my questions so far I was hoping to pick your brains further, I got a tradesman to look at my job, porcelain patio, already got the porcelain and had 2 1/2 bags of sharp sand. He doesn't want want to use the sharp sand, said it wouldn't stick, but surely that's where the slurry comes in, and instead he wants to use builders sand, what is your thoughts do some tradesmen have there own way of doing things. I was going to tackle this job myself, but for someone who has layed some 2x2 council slabs, I was maybe biting off more than I can chew lol, truthfully in your opinion would you say porcelain is just to hard to lay for a near novice, promise this is my last question and I won't keep stalking you,Thanks.
Indian builders would’ve laid whole patio in time he put three slabs down lol! No, seriously, great to see careful workmanship on display and no shoddy corner cutting!
One of the best instructional videos on laying slabs/tiles. Excellent. Thank you.

Set your fall for your patio so that the bubble on the level touches the line .
Then once you achieve this level .set your eco drains so they are about 5mm lower than the patio level so the water doesn't hold but instead falls into the drain .hope that makes sense to you and good luck 👍
Awesome job. What did you say at the end? you've had a tin foil, it sounded like to me lolol
@@richierich4810
Tin.foil.😂😂😂.
I said I've had a tit full 😂😂🙌
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping Oh haha 😂😂😭😭
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping thanks Justin I’ll have to take the plunge I think !
@markbriers4302
🤣🤣 sorry made me laugh that considering it a plunge saw Mark 👍
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping haha ! I did think that too !
The flashing blade mate cant remember his mate tho haha
Sbr we love it
Hi what cutting blades do you use on your porcelain I all ways like to find out which blades are better thank you
Elite stone tools just google them 👍
That was john with the big beard an big hat from Wiltshire 😂
🤣🤣🤣 brilliant 👍
Did you dry bond before actually setting them in place with the mortar ?
Yes we spray the area out with the bond to us and the customer can confirm its good 👍
Hi just got a tradesmen to price my patio, I've got all materials there porcelain slabs, sharp sand 2 1/2 bags, and the foundation was already layed, from previous builder he never returned.
@@gibbsy071
It's my opinion that it's the correct practice to you sharp sand for mortar on a patio along with the slurry 👍
Hi ben
Thanks mate .
For bricklaying its building sand and a wetter mix .
For stone work id use sharp sand with a drier mix 👌
@brickrightbuildinglandscaping thanks!! Love your videos!! I think I have pretty much watched every one. Keep up the good work, guys!!! Fray, you're coming on in leaps and bounds. Both with your work and in front of the camera. Awesome team!

Hi can you tell me what the paving primer is I live in Canada and the yard Im buying the porcelain from do not sell it I have accounts with tile adessive stores I asked them they didn't know either is it just thin set tile adhesive with more water added ?
@stevehunt9114
Hi Steve
It's called paving primer here in wales most merchants sell it .
If you can't get it use and SBR mixed with cement to create your own primer. Good luck mate 🏴🇨🇦
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping Thank you for your advice whats the SBR
@stevehunt9114 it's a product when painted on to the back of a slab when mixed with cement enhances the adhesion to the mortar bed .so the same as a paving primer
Lol was sunny last week in wales had to do work in my mums garden pity she's about 2 hours from cardiff or I'd tell her to ring you guys to do patio for her the local workers did a bodge up for her shed base she had to have taken down as her shed was 2 foot too high cos they didn't wanna do any digging 😔
3 days of sun means 9 months of rain now 🤣🤣 or shame about your mum mate hope its all good now 👍
Is straight SBR good as a primer?
@@WolfTrap1000 I'd mix it with cement
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping and you think as good as the newer marketed "primers"?? Always got SBR and don't like spending more money on primers 😄 Great vids! Cheers!!

Have I mist something you have not mentioned the mix sand to cement
Hi Neil
Its for parts sharp sand to one part cement 👍
I notice some guys setup a tile each side to use to run a string line off and lay to.
Youre laying just with a level, do you not struggle whem the porcelain tiles are not completely flat, often they are bowed slightly (bellied)
Couldn't set a line up as we left the original manholes in temporarily were to high for the lines .
Yea some have a camber in tiles 👍
Sound quality is superb , still can't understand what Fray says though !!!
Hmm yea will have to get a mic on fra aswell then .Thanks Scott appreciate you mate 👍
Hey just a quick question regarding the mix quantities ?
We use 4 sharp sand to 1 cement 👍
good audio!
Ever thought laying on fibre reinforced screed? You can buy it ready mixed. Saved days and days in labour on site and is a stronger mix.
Yes ive actually used the screed before was very good 👍
Spot on
Cheers Dave 👍
Needs a damp proof at the wall and a 3 inch gap ,
No damp proof needed as for the gap maybe 👍
What tiles did you use for this please?
Marshalls arrento porcelain 600mm x 600mm
Dear Brickrighters, I found that a paint roller is very fast, comfortable and accurate to spread the slurry. I did so for my own 60m2 patio last week.

Thanks Wolfram
Appreciate the advice and hope your patio went well .
Danke. 👍🙌👌
Dear Brickrighters, thanks for your reply. My patio went all well with the last silicone joints today.

Seen a lot lately about not putting the point of your trowel through the bed, absolute bull 💩
Good tip on reading the level with pressure, not easy to explain
One thing though…..wtf is an Eco drain 🤣🙈
Thanks matty appreciate that .
Eco drain mate its the new aco 🤣🤣🤣 its welsh for aco 🤣🤣 nar its what ive always called it 🤣👍
arent u supposed to make the sub base have a fall
Yes its got one
Hi you kept saying the very first slab was level, is It perfectly level, or is it touching the bubble for the beginning of your fall, total novice I'm afraid.
@@gibbsy071
The slabs left to right are level .The other direction down to the eco drain has the fall touching the bubble as you say 😊👍🙌
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping Thanks for quick reply, so are you kind of splitting the slab into two sections, eg, the top section of the slab is level, and the lower section begins to slant, is that correct, Thanks.
@@gibbsy071
That is correct 👌
Zoro’s companion was Tonto 🤪😂
Why don’t you pull a line down to the drain ?

Just to let you know. The arrows on the back of the slabs/tiles have nothing to do with the direction they should be laid.
