    hi how many block would i need to build a wall in this same method ? it will be 30 feet long and 7 feet high, and how often would you recommend putting pillars in for strength ? great informative vids by the way. when travelling through wales i always feel sorry for the poor bugger that put all those dry stone walls up hundreds of feet up mountains and all straight too,😅

    Is there a particular term for this sort of layout, instead of it being the traditional vertical block layout? I ask cos I am putting a planning application together for a retaining wall, which will have a fence fitted to the top and this is the sort of layout I need to do, to give me the sufficient depth of the block to bolt down the fence post clamps.

      10.5 newton 1,s be fine. A bit strong for the regular 7.5 newton 1,s. For strength could have used 140mm blocks on flat less cement beds

    Hi, love the video. I'm about to tackle my first wall, same blocks laying flat , about 13 long 5 high. I have only ordered one bulk bag of builders sand. Will that be enough and how many bags of cement do you think I will need? Thank you in advance 👍

      Yes that be plenty of sand, 5 bags of cement would do fine and put a tiny amount of fairy washing liquid in, it makes the mix better 👍

    Would this method be sufficient for a 14 metre by 1 metre retaining wall? Would it need reinforced or just as you done it, looks solid.

    could i build a low retaining wall roughly 1m high using this method? and are those the solid cement blocks your using?

      It's the easiest way to build a wall anyone can build this way, there solid 4 inch concrete block ye 👍

    Laying block on flat what's the difference in labour compared to block built side up? Asking as I have been asked to build a wall for a customer.

      I only build on flat as a retaining wall, I build on edge with pillers if it's just a wall buddy on edge is quicker but not as strong 👍

      The base is made of sand cement mix with chippings 👍

    Are these blocks roughly 90mm thick and 400mm long? I’m American they have similar blocks at my local Lowe’s the measurements are 3.625 in thick, 7.625 in tall, and 15.625 in long. I’m going to be building a similar wall this summer and I like your wall I want to mimic it.

    Hi, did you use medium or high density blocks? I've seen you cut the block easily with a hand tool. What tool was that, please?

      I'd say medium, and I use just a normal hammer and boldster

      Normally would leave weep holes in the first course of blocks but this wall was for decking to sit on

      Hi mate, we've made the mix a bit stronger because we going to be putting decking on top so needed strong to hold heavy weight

      @@steveSmith-pd4st morter mix far too strong when the masonary expands as it wll do the mortar wont allow that and cracks in the blocks could appear a gauged 5 to 1 ratio would be better

    I was thinking to build a garage using your method bricks laying flat, how high could i build a wall when bricks laying flat

      You can build pretty high when laying on flat but if you go over say 3 meters I would put a couple of piller in 👍

    Can you use this retaining wall as a dwarf wall for a conservatory?

      Yes you can but you'll need to dot and dab an insolation plasterboard on the inside otherwise your better with a 100mm cavity wall 👍

    I need to build a small retaining wall to prevent around 10l of soli moving would i need a concrete base or could i build up off a thick bed of morter on top of clay soil. Its about 2.5 metres long with max 3 breeze block high

      It would be better with a concrete footings but for 3 courses of blocks layed flat you'd be fine 👍

The concrete looks slightly uneven so not sure if I need new footings? Ideally I’d like to send you some pictures so you can have a look

    How do you know that the line is level between the two ends when before laying a row of blocks

      Getting the concrete footings level is the most important then every course you build check with a level and if its out of level put more or less on one side to get levels correct 👍

      @@thewelshbuilder2454 , I ain't no bricky but going to attempt to build my own wall. I have the foundation in . if I have a block at each side ,how will I know if they are right level with each other before putting a string line up . Hope this makes sense

      You don't need to be to fussy with the first course but once you've done it put a level in the middle of the wall and then lift the level left or right till the bubble is level and that tells you which side to put more bricklaying mix under the block or brick

      They are layed on the side for extra strength as there's decking going on top 👍

      If you build it like this it would be definitely stronger and easier to build if your not a bricklayer

    Hi, can you please give a name for the particular/type of blocks that must used to build a single floor extension side wall please.
    I’ve been hearing this and that and it’s confusing me.
    Is there a particular block, that has a name that should be used?
    Someone suggested. ‘breathe blocks’…..is that suitable ?
