Aussie here. And someone trying to learn how to lay Besser blocks (what you'd call "cinderblocks"). After creating my first wee wall at the weekend (8000x400mm), came to TH-cam looking for additional tips and tricks.
Firstly: your trowel guy. Work of art. If I could trowel like that, I'd die a happy man. Secondly, really enjoyed the clear commentary and camerawork. Voiceover guy does a great job.
Anyway, thank you for a really informative video. Good luck to all the amateur DIYers luck out there; may all your walls be straight and true!

I wish you were here in Phoenix, you do some outstanding work that will last a lifetime. You pay attention to detail which makes the difference. My idea if I were to build a home would be the block being reinforced at the sides of all doors and windows, then at minimum every three feet down the wall. This would rebar placed in the cores at all doors and windows, then at 36 inch intervals or less. Then bond beams every two feet up the wall for 5 bond beams on a 8 foot high wall. My home I live in is 4x8x16 block and was very well laid. There is no bucking and weaving of the block, nice straight mortar lines. It was built in a subdivision around 1966-67. Because the block was so well laid, had I been the contractor, the masonry guys would have gotten bonuses for their work, you can tell they took pride in their job. I see it in your crews as well, attention to detail is so very important. Outstanding work!!

This is mainly about masonry with some mention of rebars but in the early '70s I did a couple of years of rebar work on drainage tunnels, retaining walls and so forth; I'm often fascinated by the complexities of different kinds of construction work..., it reminds me of how ignorant I am about so many things. Good Work !!!

I live out in the country and everyone's always shooting. Yesterday a stray bullet killed my little dog in my backyard. So here I am learning how to build a type of fencing that I can do myself that's also bulletproof. Keep the bullets out of my acre backyard where my 6 yr old plays. Too paranoid now and with daily shooting going on I'm never going to feel comfortable w my kids running around out there until I know bullets aren't gonna be whizzing through low to the ground anymore.

One thing we do with vertical Rebar work is to put an end cap on all the stubs so we don't stick them in our faces when bending and working on the lines. I like the domed ones as they hurt less when i do a face plant on them.

I always have trouble with that and the back side of the blocks are usually to wide or the front side has no room to grout. same trouble with caps, they are usually not the same thickness apart or i end up not having any width to grout. if you have any tips I would appreciate it. Thank you so much.

My neighbor just had one wall built. Wife has video of the builders break bricks and filling the holes were the steel is before they filled the blocks with concrete. He was upset because he wanted to hang a gate. Claims he's going to knock of some of the cap and fill with concrete. Now my father-in-law has hired these same guys to build both of my walls. He doesn't believe my neighbors because one of the builders is an old friend from the 70's. My neighbor wants me to make sure they build them right so I found your video. 4 weeks wall one and we have a one trench with rebar and nothing else. 8 weeks and nothing done for wall two.

Even applying mortar to the blocks lol, so clean. My solution for an amateur? Get some thin wood, eg 12mm skirting kind. And a couple 2x1 ... Scraps basically. You line up your skirts on both sides of the block in about 10mm in from edge on each side, make the skirt x2 block lengths ..fix 2x1 on each end. So.. grab some mortar, slap it in, rub off, cut both sides of mortar, lift the frame off, move further down wall ..boom level mortar all the way as you work.. maybe hard to explain on here but it works a treat for me and is so clean, so fast. You only need foundation, first layer nice and level and away you go. Works with any brick, block etc but in fairness, he was using bars etc, but im sure anything's manageable.

But I also passed on some advice to anyone who wishes to 'give it a go' but is god awful with a tool in their hand. It's super quick and less fiddling with the mortar to ballance out the block work. I say work smarter, not harder ...

Do you ever have to tie the new block wall to the existing block? I'm closing up a garage door opening and not sure what product to use to tie the new block to the old. It won't be load bearing as there is a large horizontal concrete header with more block above that but it will probably be an 8 ft wall up to that header. I've been looking at tons of videos and don't really see people connecting new to old block.

I'm wondering if I should try building a wall for a pond I'm making into a hill. I'm guessing I would need more steel inside because of the water pressure?

Get you some Ideal tie wire reels, or the Kline equivalent. They'll last a lifetime and make rebar work easier. I still have the one that I used for 15 years as a concrete mason, and it was second hand.

Great video. Thank you. Funny, as I am wearing a high end head set and can hear all the kids and whispering in the background. 30 more seconds...

Do you need a permit for a block wall 6 feet high in LA county?
