    So, let me get this straight: He had a mistress for over 20 years, and 5 children by her. He finds out that his wife is having an affair and becomes upset. He has been financially supporting his 2nd family, but he tells her to stop spending so much money. He dies, possibly due to his long-time addiction, and she is convicted of his murder.

      "Crazy modern feminists" are responsible for changing the laws so husbands cannot legally rape their wives, and changing laws that permitted past sexual history of victims to be brought into courtrooms during rape trials, and making birth control legal, safe and accessible. Maybe you should thank the women you call "crazy modern feminists" and rethink deriding them like that!

    James was slowly poisoning himself. His addictions probably took there toll over the years and that's what ended up killing him. Arsenic, strychnine and cyanide are all known poisons. I think Florence was convicted because of her affair.

      I read the ‘Diary of Jack the Ripper’ book before it was debunked. It was a really good read and really well crafted - was written in a way where it made Maybrick extremely plausible to be JTR, but not ridiculously blatant about it. The only thing that bothered me was that he was ‘famous’. It just seemed too coincidental that this guy was part of a very well known criminal case. If the supposed author was a previously unknown guy it would have been really really believable in absence of the forensic testing of the journal.

    • @quickchris10comcast
      @quickchris10comcast 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mayberry not the Ripper. You simply must read Patricia Cornwell's book, closing the case on Jack the Ripper, which DNA showed to be an artist of the time, in whose possession were paintings featuring some of the crime scenes. They got DNA off the stamps on the envelopes Ripper had sent taunting Scotland Yard. They matched it to DNA on the artist's canvases. I forget the subject's name, but he had undergone painful surgeries to his genitalia as a child, to try to correct some defect. This would account for the psychological profile of the Ripper. Nothing so simple as run-of-the-mill betrayal would have created the Ripper.

    The double standards are outrageous... Like he had a mistress and five children with her, and when confronted, he told Florence to just accept it. But when she got a lover, he had the audacity to be offended? I am not saying she was right or innocent, but I am glad she was not killed and was able to write her own version of her life. I think it seems unlikely for James to have been Jack the Ripper.

    So when Florence finds out about his mistress and 5 kids he tells her to concern herself with other things? 😆 She should've went on and filed for divorce. I think she would've gotten enough sympathy to win and get her children....even back in those days! Ugh. While the husband was a scumbag I doubt he was actually Jack the Ripper. Between work and dealing with 2 families plus supporting 7 kids and poisoning himself where would he find the time to troll the streets killing and mutilating women? I think that was someone who lived in the area and did have knowledge of butchering animals, probably lived alone. Did Florence poison James? Yeah I think she did..or at least added to what her old man was already doing to himself. Biggest mistake was writing to her lover at all. I read a book on this case years ago and I seem to recall that Brierly guy testified against her in court. She was doomed and damn lucky she didn't hang for it.

    • @FunSizeSpamberguesa
      @FunSizeSpamberguesa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Unfortunately, divorce was really, really hard to get in England at that point, especially for a woman -- a man's infidelity wasn't considered ground for divorce (unless he got an STD from it), because Victorian England sucked. She'd have been a lot better off if she took the kids on vacation to America, and just never went back.

    What a complex tragedy! Another great one Brief Case! What fascinates me about so many of your cases are (1) the very short deliberation time of juries in the past, and (2) the rapid transit from verdict to execution or incarceration. Nowadays the juries in murder cases tend to deliberate for ages, no matter how clear cut the evidence might appear. As for final disposal of the guilty party - that is another story. If and when someone is executed nowadays, only the victim's family might recall the actual murder! Is justice delayed denied?

    This is such a sad, sad story. Personally, I don’t blame Florence one damned bit. With the “Jack The Ripped” association, she may well have saved countless lives. Her “husband” was a philandering cad at best, perhaps a serial killer at the worst. It is good to know her sentence was amended to set her free. Her trial by jury was far from a “jury of her peers”, not a single female thought or voice was that jury room. Thank you for another outstanding, “Brief Case”. Do take care out there.

      I don't think Maybrick was smart enough or well practiced in surgery or anatomy to have been Jack the Ripper. Definitely looks like the type who would have gotten a power trip making others believe he was. Idk, my bet is on Arthur Conan Doyle. He was a Mason, went to college to be a surgeon, his father died of a venereal disease contracted from hookers, and he obviously was genius when it came to mysteries and crime. Seems much more plausible than Maybrick in my opinion.

    Love these old cases. I am torn on whether she's guilty or not guilty. Yes, she could have murdered her husband making it look like he overdosed on his medicine or she was innocent and resigned to the fact she was in this marriage and that he died from his own addiction.
    It's just if she did do it I can understand why because he lied to her from the beginning and she was stuck, plus she felt isolated. He didn't really care for her just probably wanted a trophy wife.
    I think that guy deserved what he got whether by his wife's hand or his own. He was never going to change and probably would have wound up dead from an overdose.
    No, he is not Jack the Ripper because Jack hated women with the violence he did to them. This man had a wife, a mistress, and children whereas Jack would probably abhor this whole thing.

    I'm thinking she probably did hurry along her husband's inevitable death from his addictions. Though it wasn't really frowned upon for men to have mistresses, women in that era had to be very discreet and she certainly wasn't and you see that lack of discretion again in her attempts to add a little extra poison to his food, right in front of the maids and the nurse. Happy to hear she ended up with 15 years instead of life or death, but how sad that she died alone.

      Sorry, but I have to disagree. He didn't simply carve up his victims completely with no skill. How he took out some of the organs clearly showed he knew what he was doing. That aspect of Jack The Ripper had only very recently been put in doubt by somewhat dubious so-called experts.
      True, perhaps he wasn't a doctor or surgeon. But he had some skill. Perhaps a butcher or a barber. (Keep in mind that barbers at the time did far more than just cutting hair or trimming beards. They often performed certain tasks for their customers we'd today only associate with as being a doctor's territory only.)

    The judge was removed from the bench after the trial on the grounds of mental incompetence. He directed the jury to disregard all expert evidence put forward by the defence.
    Much was nade of her alleged infidelity, as if that somehow made her a murderer. Hypocrisy.
    Maybrick's addiction to arsenic was probably a result of its being used to treat him in the past for syphilis. Bet he hadn't told her about that.

    I wonder if she even poisoned him. He had a small amount of arsenic in his system. He had been taking arsenic based medicine and was addicted to it along with other medications. He probably was getting more drugs off of the streets of London than his doctors were prescribing and being ill had no access to them. Knowing that the arsenic based drugs helped alleviate his drug cravings he may very well have asked his wife to spike the meat juice with the arsenic that she used for her complexion. They may have told no one about this since they would want to keep his drug addiction a secret. The fact that he did not have enough in his system to kill him and his death was ruled to long term consumption of the arsenic, coupled with his long term use of arsenic based drugs should have been reason to acquit her...But then again she was an unfaithful wife in a time where unfaithfulness was only accepted when a man did such things.
    I'm glad that she got to live a long life, but it is sad that she never saw her children again.
