    So sad that in the beginning she lost her daughter. Always seemed to be a very hard worker. Then she met this alcoholic dude, always run as far and as fast as you can when the guy is an alcoholic. She was constantly willing to pay his debts hoping he would change, but he never did. And then murdered her! She deserved much much better in life than what she got. God bless her soul and I hope her and her daughter are happy in heaven!!

      Yeah, London was a hard place to be a woman back then, let alone an unwed one. The story of each of Jack's victims was a veritable tragedy even before they crossed his path. That's why I've made the small effort to remember their names. Their stories and the times they represent should not be forgotten. RIP Mary Ann, Annie, Elizabeth, Catherine and Mary Jane. Same goes for Ellen here, no human being should have had to live like they did, only to die like they did.
      The fact that there are _so many_ reasonable suspects for Jack is also quite shocking and says a lot about London at the time. I have no idea how you get so many woman-hating murderous psychopaths in one location at one time. I'd suggest it was something in the water but it kinda looks like they drank gin instead of water back then. Must've been laced with something; I refuse to believe all these men were just evil by nature.

      It was easy to force confessions out of ppl, heck when we started relay on more physical evidence and not confessions and witness accounts. So less murders was solved when CSI technics become more advanced less crimes got solved in many countries. After all it was easier for the police to beat the crap out of a hobo and force a confession from him then do a real investigation.

    • @Gripen1974
      @Gripen1974 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @David Parry Heck you didn't need same amount of evidence back then and it was easy for the cops to simply beat a confession out of a suspect or simply pay some poor sucker to witness against the subject. It wasn't so much more brain but brawn which made the old police solve the crime, we seen that from UK, USA and Sweden at least prob also France and others wasn't any better.

      I wonder what percentage of crimes were solved back then, and how many cases were properly solved, with the actual guilty party found, as opposed to a scape goat just to close the case and appear the public.
      And then take those numbers and compare them to today's percentages. Would it be about the same, now and then, in solving the crimes and in the corruption and sentencing of innocents? Or has the advancements in technology really made that big of a difference in solving crimes?

      Its impossible to cut open your own abdomen and put a rope around your neck or vise versa.
      If I was a juror, along with other evidence his request for a larger than normal trunk sealed his fate. He wasn't as smart as he thought he was.
      I think the judge ordering the jury back to reconsider the punishment carried out was odd. They said the medical evidence was questionable, yet they came back so quickly the 2nd time with punishment of death.

A veritable myriad of which for good reason (sorry, there has to be a better way to say that...) As it turns out, there were a _lot_ of _really bad_ dudes around back then--so many, in fact, that I can't help wondering whether the Ripper murders were really the work of only one man.

    I've watched quite a few JR doco's and it sounds more like this guy just wanted people to think he was really JR. There were a number of men who claimed to be JR as well those others who didn't but whose movements coincided with the times of the White Chapel murders, the periods when there no murders and when the murders ceased completely. I guess this guy is a possibility but it seems out of character to Jack's way of operating to give himself up and confess to murder. JR didn't seem to have any conscience about his gruesome murderous ways yet William claimed the killing of Ellen was playing on his mind. One could argue this particular killing 'played on his mind' because she was his wife and therefore he had a personal connection to her, yet he had no problem beating her up. Also considering how many murders JR committed and the gruesome way yet almost surgical way in which he did them - not just killing but mutilating these women - I find it difficult to believe even killing his own wife would bother the true JR to the point he'd give himself up. Personally I think this guy isn't as strong a genuine suspect as some of the others but who really knows in the end?

    Hmmm, he killed poor Ellen to stop her revealing he was Jack the Ripper then went to a police station and gave himself up so he wouldn't be thought of as Jack the Ripper? It seems more likely that he had alcohol-induced psychosis.

    Nah, he wasn't the Ripper. He probably scrawled those messages himself. It sounded like he was trying to claim diminished responsibility for his actual crime. Adding that his wife was out drinking with him on her "last" night alive, was a red flag, for me anyway, because apparently she never did that before. At least no one came forth and supported that claim.

    Sounds typical of many cases we see back then. People marrying people for their tiny little fortune then killing for what is left (rings) or to cover up stealing. Quite the prize was he not? That poor girl used, abused and disposed. Wonder if he cut her abdomen because claimed pregnant, curiosity or cruelty. Appears to have premeditated before they even relocated as man who made trunk wondered why such a size.

    As a Dundonian, there are a few things about William Henry Bury.
    1. His unmarked grave is on the wall between Bell Street Police station and Bell Street car park.
    2. The shopkeeper spoke to Ellen about the Jack the Ripper killings in London and Ellen reportedly said something along the lines of "Jack is having a break at the moment". The shopkeeper found this very peculiar comment to make.
    3. The executioner claimed that William Henry Bury's last words were "I'm Jack".

    oddly, the major cause of death on the Oregon Trail, was falling under a wheel. Graveyards are full of such deaths, often mentioning this on the tombstones.

    • @annalisette5897
      @annalisette5897 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the major cause of death on the Oregon Trail was disease. I live a few miles from the actual trail. Lots of histories of wagon trains detail continuous deaths from intestinal diseases, typhus, scrub typhus and whatever else contaminated the trail after hundreds of people and animals had passed. One particularly unlucky train can be partially traced by the known graves. (This train was the 'Lost Meeks' who supposedly found the 'Blue Bucket (gold) Mine'. It was never an actual mine, nobody ever found it again and a number of us follow the clues via deaths recorded in diaries.)

    I also heard theories that Jack the Ripper was a immigrant from either 🇮🇪 or 🇵🇱 BC if not mistaken Brief Case, wasn't White Chapel at the time a place where a lot of immigrants lived? Also, their are theories that Jack the Ripper was a police officer or doctor since Jack the Ripper was never caught and the manner of the victims were cut, a very sharp knife was used. I think William Bury, although a strange character, was not Jack the Ripper and was probably an attention seeker. Good episode Brief Case!!
