You should have used a native RF Lense on the Canon. Sony had a native lens and the Canon was using the EF 50mm f1.2 which is not a very good lens. I have the RF 50mm f1.2L USM and it's extremely superior to the EF 50mm f1.2L.

Fun intro 🤪😂 I’m shooting both of these 2 very good hybrid cameras for almost a year now. They are very similar but over the time my usage shifted as I was progressing with my work (commercial and corporate videos).
Here’s the experience I can share:
The A73 was my first full frame camera, I got it with the Zeiss 16-35f4 which is excellent, compact, stabilized. When I needed more reach I used the aps-c crop. Then I got the excellent Tamron 28-75, I shot really cool stuff with that but I needed a second camera so I gave a shot to the EOS R when released. No more debate for me, I had both the most popular bodies. I quickly got a whole bunch of used EF and top EF-L glasses on eBay which is a cool thing with Canon.
The ergonomics of the EOS R are better, so I started using it more just because it was more enjoyable, and I was picking up the A73 mostly for what I was only missing in the EOS R, the 1080p at 120fps. Then 3 months ago I bought a Ninja V and starting editing ProRes 10bit 422 footage. This helped me significantly to reach another level with my productions, and brought me more clients with bigger budgets. My best investment yet in 2019! Then this also broke my relationship with my A73 and its limited 8 bit output. So I bought an X-T3 because it would output 10 bit 422, just to try it. Not only it replaced the A73 with a much better codec for my 120fps needs (200mbps/10bit420 internally), but also it gave me a phenomenal 4k60 ProRes on the Ninja V. I just sold my A73 a month ago, no regret. Now I’m looking at a more pro level cinema camera, but this will be for another discussion.
    My thoughts after 1 year:
The Sony A73 has been a much better photography camera than the EOS R for me (for me): It is smaller, faster, good AF and easy to edit in raw to get the colors you want in stills.
The EOS R has been a better video camera for me (again, for me): ergonomics are ultimate, internal codecs and output options are better resulting in a better image quality in my videos with more flexibility in editing, good L lenses are more affordable than E mount, digital IS combined with lens IS are far superior to the very mediocre IBIS of the A73.
Finally the X-T3 besides the major drawback of being a cropped APS-C has replaced my A73 (exact same small body size) with better 120fps and also better stills, and brought 4k60 10 bits to my arsenal. As it does not offer any sort of stabilization, it’s on my gimbal most of the time.
I will look at Sony again if they release (one day) the A7S3. I would probably give it a try if it has a 10 bit 422 output and the same specs of the A73 with a better IBIS or Digital IS (that’s the future guys, look at GoPro7 or Osmo Action). That’s it. And this would be already a major step from Sony. Honestly we should not expect 4k60 no crop and 10 bits internally because that’s what they give you on the brand new $10k Sony FX9. Sorry.
In conclusion, based on my personal experience and needs, I would recommend the A73 more for photography oriented work, and the EOS R more for video oriented work. They are both absolute monsters and incredible value.
    I hope this helped.

Just to give you an update 2 years later lol, I now have 2 Canon R5 and still have my Eos R that I use as a fixed third camera and "action" camera with a 10-18 Efs. It is still perfectly working and has been 100% reliable in harsh conditions like saltwater, sand, mud, and snow.
I got my first R5 the day it came out, and since then I haven't watched any reviews or TH-cam video on any newer cameras, it's a total endgame for me. I know there has been a lot of controversy about the overheating, I've never had that issue (and I'm half time in South Florida). Still running Ninja Vs for ProRes, and besides a ton of Dji stuff this is all I've been using for almost 2 years now. Never looked back, never looked elsewhere, not even at newer Canon cameras as they keep updating the R5's firmware all the time with new features.

Your AF tests 29 to 30 frames per second on both cameras on medium drive speed !!! Which cameras were you using again ?
    Canon:-
With Servo AF enabled (continuous autofocus), Canon claims the EOS R's max burst speed is 5.0 fps, however we didn't test that in the lab. When shooting Dual Pixel RAW files, the camera drops down to Continuous Low mode which is rated at 3.0 fps for standard files and 2.2 fps for Dual Pixel RAW files.
    Sony:-
In Continuous Hi+ mode, the Sony A7 III's top burst speed is a claimed 10 frames per second, and that's with continuous AF/AE. In the lab, the A7 III tested very close to that spec, at about 9.9 frames per second with just JPEGs, and about 9.7 frames per second with uncompressed RAW files.
Both cameras after a 3 second burst, canon 6-9 shots, sony 27-29 shots. So even with your test where the sony lost 4 shots you still have 16 more usuable shots compared to the canon.
If you want to do a proper AF test have the model walk 10 feet, take as many shots as possible and then see how many are in focus at the end.

I have both. Bought the A7iii as soon as it came out to use as a gimbal camera. But I couldn’t stand the color and low bit rate for 4k. S-log’s range seems great until you go to grade that over-compressed codec. I picked up the EOS R, and now my A7iii is mostly collecting dust. Even the in-camera codec on the EOS R is better to work with, and c-log is so much easier to grade than s-log (IMO). The crop is annoying, but in a few cases, the extra range has also been GREAT to have.

I got it for better dynamic range and 4k shooting (things CANON is holding out on, cause they are focused on the semi-pro consumers). I am really not liking this camera. It's like IOS to Android (which I use both). I don't feel like I should have to spend forever setting up menus and turning stuff on to get a damn photo. Feels counter productive. Just to say I use Canon 600d (two of them) and a Samsung NX11 - which I will use until they pack in :-)...so no bias from me. Sony was way better than the Canon. I opened 2 tabs in my browser to make detailed comparisons and the Canon was softer...far more detail from the Sony - this could be the glass (likely?!) and the dynamic range, especially the highlight comparison... definitely the Sony was better. The colours are so similar, plus editing will often change all of that, It all boils down to what glass and system you are coming from and are invested in...I suppose.
I wonder if in doing testing the cameras used are not identified until the end and are given a letter - Camera A and Camera B and some images are in B&W to hide the colour difference...just an idea but good to see the comparison. Keep up the good work.

re: sony being warmer. I have done some tests with my 5D-ii and a7Riii and have found the lenses had more effect on the colour balance than the sensor. (But having said that, the Canon produced warmer tones than the Sony when using the same lens)
The fact that the Canon was producing consistantly warmer images in your dynamic range tests suggests that the apparent warmth of the Sony image was a quirk of the location and lighting for that shot.
As for 'image quality', the Sony looks sharper than the Canon, but that probably comes down to the lenses used, I would put money on things being a lot different if you'd used an RF mount lens. (as much as I love my 50/1.2, it is a bit old and shouldn't really be compared to the new wave of super-sharp glass)

    • @lucuslopez6866
      @lucuslopez6866 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes I agree that glass will have an effect on color balance more than the sensor. But it also depends on the software in the camera. If you compare 5d ii, 5d iii, and 5d iv I'm sure under different lighting each camera will render color differently, some might be warmer and some cooler. I dont think it will always be consistent 100%.
So it is possible for Sony camera to reproduce warmer tones than a Canon under certain lighting conditions. And its possible for a Canon camera to reproduce warmer tones than a Sony under different lighting conditions.

Why @the slanted lens is BIASED in his comparisons, and why he always wants to bash SONY: at 4:28, you see how he is not stating the obvious he is saying "Just a little bit of colors shift on her face" ... REALLY? just a bit ?? how about her shirt and pants ? Look at those weird red lines and noise. Those red lines makes the image unusable.
at 2:49. You're comparing 30MP sensor vs 24MP sensor and you say you don't see tons of difference? There are clear and obvious differences. First, look at her cheeks, on the canon it has yellowish/greenish color while the Sony looks a bit more neutral. Then look at the overall image specially at her eyes, the 24MP sensor is quite sharper. Why not admit that?
Also when you compare the shots of her walking towards the camera. You're comparing 11 FPS vs 5 or 6 FPS? If Canon could shoot the same amount as Sony, we might be able to see quite a few out of focus. You're comparing 30 photos vs 15 for example, if 3 out of 30 out of focus, you still have 27 good focused images. On the canon, you have 15 only even if they are all in focus. See the difference?

The canon she’s the face is in focus and it’s nearly perfect every time the hit rate is better on the eos r. The iq of the eos r with r lenses is pretty close to the a7riii. The colour on the Canon blows the Sony out of the water.

I have bought all the high end primes and zooms with three systems. The AE-I, EOS film and started my digital life with Canon with the 1DS Mark ll. The body alone cost $8000.00 on that camera. Now I have Canon 5D Mark lll bodies and have waited patiently for this pro Canon mirrorless camera to come out and this was the best they could do? Have only one card slot was the big message to me to pass on this camera now I can’t wait any longer. I have had my shutters replace twice and I am close to 1,000,000 shutter counts in both bodies. The electronic mother boards are starting to do funky things with both Cameras and I will not replace any more parts. I need new cameras and will have to take a bath on the lenses when I sell them. My Canon cameras will now become paper weights.

Over 30 years of shooting canon starting with a AE-1 and ending with the 5diii. Tried a POS R to replace the 5diii for almost a month. What a turd of camera. Crap ergo, senseless bar on the top, no joystick, single slot, eye AF is a total joke and a AF system that has a hard time hitting every shot at a GLACIAL 3fps. a7iii is a better body in every single way.
a7iii has better AF, BY FAR. Even at higher speed (9fps vs 3fps) it has a better hit rate
a7iii has a better sensor that has better DR .
a7iii has eye af that actually works and animal eye af that is fn amazing. It will take canon YEARS to catch up to sonys af system.

MC-11 is simple and works very nicely with Sigma lenses, but the MetaBones has the basic / advanced switch that can also really change the behavior., so maybe worth messing with that before putting your cash down on the barrel for either body. I have some lenses that are great on one adapter and terrible on the other. I have to admit I got frustrated with having to think about mode/adapter to use and am leaving my Canon glass at home most of the time.
I am sure adapting EF lenses to RF body is a lot better than the third party shenanigans I have dealt with, but I imagine you will end up native RF or FE mount in a year or two anyway.

This is not even a question. The Sony is a mature product vastly superior to this 1st Gen Canon camera. Only blind fanboys will pick the Canon over the Sony

      Just compare the specification.
60 frames per second with full HD Canon is a joke. Nikon - 120 frames per second full hd.
      12 serial images Nikon.
      Canon - 8.
      + Nikon lenses are sharper.
And Canon is much more expensive.

Ergonomics canon? Have you shot the pos R? Shot canon over 30 years and I found the R to be even worse then Sony's (which I didnt like either). The pos R has HORRIBLE button placement, that stupid swipe pad up top, no joystick and a rear touchscreen the only works if you are right eye dominant . The thing was trash to shoot.
Canon saw all the press sony was getting for having bad ergo and was like "hold my beer, we can beat that"
Because even bad press is good press.

Rubi Doo the buttons doesn’t bother me , but yeah do miss the joystick ... its kinda stupid removing it ....
