Ford had developed a 2005 F-150 Lightning to compete with the Ram SRT-10, and it was going to have a 6 Speed Manual, it was cancelled right before production though 😢
Wow I remember watching this video when I was a sophomore in high school back in 2015 thinking to myself I would love to own a manual swapped truck one day, it might not be a ford lightning but I ended up swapping a tr6060 on to my rcsb 05 GMC Sierra recently !! I also have videos myself of how it turned out feel free to check them out if you’d like ! I just wanted to say thank you for being part of my inspiration !
Those 2nd Gen lightnings definitely needed a 6 spd manual. I couldn't believe how quick they were with that 4R100, they took forever to shit at full throttle
The sad thing is that the days of getting even a regular pickup truck with a manual transmission (especially full size) is all but gone. I bet there is a market for this kind-of conversion. I hope you are able to take advantage of it and get very wealthy in the process. Once again, very nice job!
@@user-zd8vg1nl5g no but it is a sport truck. They handled amazingly well for a full size pickup stock and with a few mods can really drive like a sports car so the manual would def help with that
I give you tons of credit because this had to be a pain in the butt to get sorted out. These trucks should've been manuals from the factory in my opinion. I am considering buying one of these and a trans swap is on my radar but I don't want to get in over my head. 🤔
My head unit has the ability to have a custom splash screen on start-up. That's an image I found on the internet. I like that it looks closer to factory with it that way.
Eric Narvaiz new head units come with a logo option I know my Pioneer 2019 unit has that option prebuilt. It basically has every single known car manufacture logo that you can choose.
This fellow old farmer had me help deliver square bales and he had a 2000's f150 4.6 5speed 4x4 and it had a motor out of a mustang idk if theres any difference. Had no rev limiter and was geared high. Regret not buying it. Lol
Nice work man... I have a lot to redo and fix on my 6-speed conversion. Still have no reverse, my transmission needs a rebuild, and I need to re-engineer my transmission mount. What shifter are you running? Looks like it has a MUCH smaller gate and shorter throw. I'm interested in getting one like that, as it feels like I a rowing a boat in mine. Keep up the good work man!
Skyler Unruh That's the custom shifter that I made. I designed the throw and spacing to be exactly what I wanted. It turned out great. I hope to start selling them soon.
AaronDC8402 Please let me know as soon as you start producing these... i am very interested in picking one up, depending on price of course. It looks leaps and bounds better than what I am using. Can you tell me, is it made of T6061 billet aluminum or of some grade of steel? Just need something that will hold up to heavy abuse, lol.
+AaronDC8402 Wow, for something that you custom-built, it looks factory in quality and I agree, the throws look very nice and short, unlike many factory Ford manual transmission shifters. What a great job you did on it. It is one thing to design something that looks good, quite another to design something that works. These two things don't always come together but you found the perfect balance of form and function. The shifter looks like it could be out of one of the older, manual transmissioned Explorers or F150s but it definitely performs much better with the shorter, more positive throws. It looks so factory that I am surprised it's not but I know it isn't and that it works much better than anything Ford would have brought out if there was a manual trans available in an F150 today.
It's a slightly loaded question. In a drag race, the auto was faster. The manual is a more efficient power transmission, so more horsepower makes it from the engine to the ground. The manual swap also shaves about 150 lbs out of the truck. There are situations the manual would be faster. I did the swap for the control and fun of a manual trans. It was also a fun project.
Any other mods to this truck? Or just tran swap? This looks faster, and way more responsive than automatics (duh). Just wondering if any other mods too??
It has a ported supercharger, 6lb lower pulley, long tube headers, high flow cats, bassanni exhaust, intake, and probably a few other little things I'm forgetting.
When you unplugged the auto transmission did it throw an engine light that you needed to have turned off, or was the system happy without any computer changes
The top one is an AeroForce Interceptor. It connects to the OBD2 port and can show any PID available from the ECU. Middle is an air/fuel ratio gage. Bottom is a boost gage.
@@AaronDC8402 Thanks! That is what I needed to know. No clearance issues or anything? Just order ones for an 02 lightning? How's the truck been since completed?
@@19jody72 It's been perfect, mostly. I only got about 25,000 miles out of the first clutch. It did great up until all the friction material was gone. Never slipped until it started riding on the rivets. I've got a Centerforce twin in it now. It's doing great. We'll see if it lasts longer.
@@AaronDC8402 That is great! Exactly the feed back I wanted to hear. I appreciate it. You don't happen to have any hookups from the any of the transmission shops do you? $3299 is what I'm finding. It is what it is though. Then I have to get the bell housing and clutch. My engine dynoed 435/495. WAY more than I need for a daily driver travle truck. It's going to be a nice little build I think.
@@19jody72 Tremec has a strict retail price policy. You should see that the transmission is the same price everywhere you look. I'm a fan of American Powertrain. If you want to save a few bucks, I would consider the TKX transmission. It's a 5 speed, but is built with very similar architecture to the Magnum. It's a little lighter too. If the TKX had been an option when I did my swap, it would have been a tough decision on which one I went with.
It's the Tremec Magnum which is an aftermarket only transmission. It is not available in any production cars. This is the "Ford" version with the 2.97 1st and 0.5 6th.
You could definitely convert it to a manual. It would probably be easiest to use a manual transmission from a super duty truck, but that will not be a very sporty transmission. I know that Jeep used a T-56 in the 4-door Wrangler. I'm not sure what transfer case they put behind them.

In my humble opinion, this is the way all SVT Lightnings should have came. Great idea and nice job!
Ford had developed a 2005 F-150 Lightning to compete with the Ram SRT-10, and it was going to have a 6 Speed Manual, it was cancelled right before production though 😢
Of course. If the xrunner came stick and the chevy extreme, lightning should've definitely have one.

the manual is just so alive compared to the auto
Very nice. BTW, did you change the steering wheel. I don't remember Ford Trucks having that wheel other than the ranger/Explorer!
It's the stock Lightning steering wheel. All other F150's had the two-spoke wheel, I think.
I'd love to do this to my '01.
It should have came like this from the factory
the ford lightning came out with a 4-speed automatic, no standard came out.
That's right, so I made my own.
I did my conversation but I think my clutch pedal feels to high had you had the problem what did you do to fix it
I didn't have that problem. You're using a hydraulic clutch, right? What master cylinder and slave cylinder combo?
excellent truck man with manual transmission its twin awsome
Did you have to get a viper trans to do the swap?
No, I used a new Tremec Magnum from American Powertrain.

It's a 2001.
Where did you get the center console
Console came from either a navigator or expedition. I don't remember which. I had a local upholstery shop re-cover the arm rest.
Did you have to use an adapter to fit the transmission in the lightning?
Any mod motor to T56 bell housing will work. I used a McLeod bell housing.
@@AaronDC8402 Ok thank you for the information. I have one more question, for the transmission did you use the t56 XL or the regular one?
@@driverboyy1459 I used the regular Magnum. The XL puts the shifter too far rearward.

Other than the t56 magnum what else do you need to make this happen 📝
I like that truck
did these trucks come with stick as option? or is this just crazy custom work?
They were never available as a manual. it's not too crazy of a swap, but there are some custom parts involved.
What year is the shifter console.

I don't remember exactly. It's from an Expedition, maybe a 2002. There are 2 styles, wide top and narrow top. This is the wide one.
