The handling on these are actually very good for a full size pickup truck from this era. They handle like a big car which isn't easy to accomplish with a factory pickup from the late 90s.
The brakes are in fine shape, they just can’t handle serious canyon driving. I don’t expect them to perform like my Corvette or Porsches, but the brake fade is excessive.

Great video!! I bought a mint condition 2002 SVT Lightning last year. It has 32k miles on the odometer. It's a California truck and I LOVE driving it!!!! It's 100% stock with no mods.
I built my own version due to how expensive the real deal is. I found a nice 04 f-150 2x4 xlt, the paint, interior, and cosmetics are nice. I bought a rolled 2020 f-150 5.0 10spd and put it in the 04, next comes the blower and fuel system. For 20k plus my labor so far it’s been a fun project, but also a lot of work. I have many loose ends to still tie up tho.
Amazing truck, i was working at ford as a lot porter when a low miles used one came on the lot. Service manager asked me to take it to the tire shop for new tires.....i made sure the old tires were junk by the time i got it there.
Seeing the kid jump into Hoovies car at the end reminded me of one time at a car dealership I used to work at. I was what they called a Service Porter up on the Service Drive. I was told to jump start a customers Cadillac sedan that had been brought in and was getting ready to remove the cover to the trunk release (electric but had a outside covered key) and discovered the back doors were unlocked, the front were electric. I could just get in the back seat and reach over to pop the drivers door. The ground was wet and I didn't want to have to clean my wet shoe prints off the rear seats so I took off my shoes to avoid making a mess.
Had the same odometer issue in my 99 mustang. They look like about the same cluster. Takes less than 10 mins to get out. Just some interior to pop out and half a dozen torx screws. Disassemble the cluster back and just take a soldering iron to the odometer pinout. Worked great
My father inlaw bought one if these, he did not like using it for truck things so when those needed to happened we swapped, that was a fun truck, it is still rolling around where I live.

If you are comfortable at all with soldering, you can fix the odometer very easily by resoldering one or two points on the circuit board. Plenty of TH-cam videos available on fixing that. The compass/thermometer in the upper center console has a habit of going out too, but also a very easy soldering fix. Congrats on joining the Lightning club.
My neighbour had a black one for many years. When working in the front yard, I always knew when Jim was coming home because you could hear the supercharger whine (I would then go and help him make the difficult turn, backing his fishing rig into a narrow driveway off a super busy street. He finally sold it (the rwd was not too useful on greasy boat ramps and he did a lot of fishing). The one rusty place I found was the rad support, which I noticed was very bad when I was underneath trying to fix one of the lower fog lights. It was a cool truck and always sat so right.
Thank the fan that hooked you up this time. Van Gogh can most likely save that Lightening rear bumper, and maybe do rust stop on the other few places, and get it all back 100%! As Always, May God Bless you and yours!

I worked at a ford dealer in San Diego and got to drive a manual version of one of these. I guess it was made specifically for some rich footballer that played for San Diego. Beast of a car but you could tell the transmission definitely came out of a commercial truck, quite crude and notchy.
@@Two_trucksDoes your reading comprehension suck that bad? Which part of this sentence "I guess it was made specifically for some rich footballer that played for San Diego" Did you not understand? IT WAS MADE FOR HIM SPECIFICALLY. Get it?
@@KinannExcept that isn't how it works. With boutique brands & exotics, yes. With domestics & volume brands? No. It doesn't matter what your status is. They do not build vehicles with options not offered for the public for you. The original commenter is mistaken about the manual.
The horse power bump actually came in 2001,it also added 3:73 gears, bilstein shocks, larger throttle body. I test drove a 2000 before buying my 2001,it was a noticeable difference in acceleration, ride, handling. I still have that 01 with 10k miles on it,never driven in rain and always stored indoors. It still looks new,and even retained the new car smell. I ordered an extra set of floor mats and 4 wheels when I bought it,those are still in my garage attic along with about every piece of literature available back then.
Once they're modified they're all basically the same. Kind of like the 07-12 gt500 the 07-09 makes same power as 10-12 once they're modified the same even though the later cars came with more power and better gearing factory.
Looks like an upgraded heat exchanger at 15:55. Much larger and thicker than stock which is really nice to see. This truck overall looks like a great deal for $15k. Rust is pretty minimal and it seems to run well. Would be awesome to see a smaller pulley, bigger injectors, and a tune on it. A tune would definitely fix the falling on its face that occurs with these good old 4r100's have in their stock form.
I have a 2000 lightning that I bought in 2003. It's the longest I ever owned any vehicle. I absolutely love that truck and have 161k on it. It's been the most fun vehicle I ever owned also. They really are great trucks. No nannies to deal with like traction control, etc. You got yourself a good truck congrats.
With all of the flash from those movies, I think it’s awesome when you see a lightning with the decal on the side. Such a subtle nod that feels so “iykyk” for such a GIGANTIC franchise
Looks pretty good underneath with regard to rust. Those gusset pieces that attach the cab to the rocker panels always rust badly. Hose them out really good--they fill up with mud and small rocks. Then (when dry) spray them with an anti-rust film (inside and out) like Woolwax, Fluidfilm, etc. I did that to mine and it stopped it from rusting any further.
The Gen 1 had a Windsor block, but was a racing block made in Italy. There are lots of aftermarket parts for the Windsor and they are regularly made into quarter mile racers that would lift the front wheels with a few upgrades.
The Windsor block wasn't made in Italy I'm pretty sure you're confusing that with the aluminum teksid block found in the 90s 4v 4.6 engines. The 351 was just a cast iron block they were stout especially compared to a 302 from the 80s era but I'm pretty sure they wasn't made in Italy.
@@midnight347 Are you saying Im forgetting an article I read 30 years ago? Yeah, I probably am. Other thoughts in the cobwebs was it was made stronger to handle more power than the regular Windsor block. I had a 95 F150 351W manual. Loved that truck.
Make sure the intercooler isn’t OEM or keep an eye on it! The early year ones would develop a leak and fill the turkey pan (lower intake), assuming it didn’t get sucked into the engine.

I worked at a ford dealer in San Diego and got to drive a manual version of one of these. I guess it was made specifically for some rich footballer that played for San Diego. Beast of a car but you could tell the transmission definitely came out of a commercial truck, quite crude and notchy.
Even the mustang had a notchy shifter its a ford
These never came manual from the factory
@@Two_trucksDoes your reading comprehension suck that bad?
Which part of this sentence "I guess it was made specifically for some rich footballer that played for San Diego" Did you not understand?
IT WAS MADE FOR HIM SPECIFICALLY.
Get it?
@@AlexLopez-jt5zc That might have been it then. That supercharger whine was something really nice. Pulled like a beast.
@@KinannExcept that isn't how it works. With boutique brands & exotics, yes. With domestics & volume brands? No. It doesn't matter what your status is. They do not build vehicles with options not offered for the public for you. The original commenter is mistaken about the manual.
Changing a heater core is an experience in one of those you'll want to forget... hopefully that one won't start leaking.
Dear Tyler - Don't mud it. Love, everyone.
Kind of like the 07-12 gt500 the 07-09 makes same power as 10-12 once they're modified the same even though the later cars came with more power and better gearing factory.
that supercharger is TIRED! XD
That's the sound of heat soak, a lot of straining along with zero air box silencer.
Tyler, PLEASE get this one detailed out and cleaned and PPE treated over at Van Gogh's.
It's WILD when you look at this truck and then compare it to the newest F150. Vehicles got bigger but that size change is CRAZY
Park it next to a modern Bro-Dozer and giggle at how ridiculous they are
Looks like an upgraded heat exchanger at 15:55.
GMC Typhoon says hold my beer!
Yes, Stuart's back!!! We missed him
Hoovie is the type of guy who eats his Alphabet cereal in Alphabetical order
I have a 2000 lightning that I bought in 2003. It's the longest I ever owned any vehicle. I absolutely love that truck and have 161k on it. It's been the most fun vehicle I ever owned also. They really are great trucks. No nannies to deal with like traction control, etc. You got yourself a good truck congrats.
That thing sounds heat soaked.
What’s that?
How do you hear heat🤨
@@Ambrose4k The bogging sound and it's lack of going anywhere slow acceleration. I have one.
@@DanThePan68 hot air through the intake, lack of actual supercharged acceleration. The bogging.
Shoutout to the viewer who hooked Hoover up with this classic ❤ they’ve grown on me so much over the years!
Whoever is watching this video, I hope this day will be a great day.
With all of the flash from those movies, I think it’s awesome when you see a lightning with the decal on the side. Such a subtle nod that feels so “iykyk” for such a GIGANTIC franchise
First to like it hell yea
And? What about it?
You want a cookie??

*Is this all you do?*
My favorite hoovies rig he's bought recently! What a beauty! 🤘
Had one of those trucks years ago... loved it and miss it sometimes. Fun as hell love the whine
I love that truck and I'm so happy to see vanngo back!!
