  • I discovered water in my lower unit when changing the gear lube. I had to change the water pump housing and impeller anyway so I pulled the lower unit and did a pressure test. I found the driveshaft seal was completely useless. I decided to change it myself.

great helpful video! I'll re-iterate myself two things mentioned here, 1 shaft clean clean clean where this sits.Another commenter mentioned the bottom seal spring can come off when sliding onto the shaft (and you will now know it). After i got mine together i put it under pressure, bubbles! what the heck. carefully unbolted the cover and slid it up saw the spring under the seal not on it. Removed the cover (all in one with seals) recleaned the shaft, and took two tweezers to work the spring back on, recleaned shaft and bit more grease on seal....success 2nd go round

Good practice if you are driving seals in verses pressing is to pack the back sides with Vaseline or marine grease. Occasionally the impact will knock the springs out. Good insurance.

I like the ladder holder, I think the 2nd seal is backwards I could be wrong. emory cloth will smooth out the impecfections in the shaft.

    Thanks for the great video.
Where did you buy your handpump test from or whatever it's called?

Any chance you could show a short video on how to remove the lower unit so I can change my water pump I’m having trouble finding the shift rod screw and I just don’t want to mess it up, but I really want to change it before the season. Thanks

I think you hit your seals to far down in the housing. They should sitt flush to the top not bottom. now they are blocking the bearing flushing hole over the needle bearing.. I would expect lower lifetime because of this.

Hi, thanks for video, I have exactly the same water pump replacement situation and discovered loose driveshaft seals... I shall order my set of seals today.
BTW: Did you finally change the Exhaust Housing to Shift Rod Grommet? If so, do you have any remarks on that change? Or video?
Thanks again & take care ;-)

Hi, I luckily haven’t had any more water intrusion since this seal change so I’m leaving the others alone from now. Maybe tackle next time I do the impeller. Good luck with your seal change. Wasn’t too bad. Just go slow and think and be deliberate. You’ll be good!

Just flip your socket upside down works perfect

Do you know if some year models have a single seal instead of the inner and outer?

How would there be bubbles on the outside with the vacuum test?

The pump works both ways. Sucks and blows. I had it set to pump pressure into the gear case.
