Loved this conversation Glyn, thank you. I’m delighted that we’re even discussing the capabilities of a phone against those of a very expensive camera. When you mentioned EVFs compared with phone screens, made me wonder what a 20 year old’s views about all this would be. Thanks again, have a great week.
Great session. On catch up because I was travelling. CameraPixels is good for Focus Bracketing, and I use Helicon. One point to check with Shiftcam is any lag over Bluetooth for Shutter Release. It’s the main frustration for me on the street with SmallRig trigger but not so much for other genres. Also not keen on MagSafe on street with theft hence I haven’t used Shiftcam. Now using Nikon sometimes on street with 40mm lens to overcome this lag limitation. And a YES for any editing stuff.
At the end of the video I couldn’t believe that almost 90 minutes had flown by! I loved the new words: “faff” and “chuffed”! I have moved to mobile photography from mirrorless and I’m loving it! Have a great week!
Hey Glyn. Sorry I missed this when it was live. As an iPhone only photographer, I loved this conversation. I had so much I could have said in the chat. Regarding the lenses, for me personally, I do enjoy using them at times when they could benefit the shot. For instance, instead of using the 2x (48 mm) focal length, I'll put on the Reeflex 2x Telephoto to get a view that is close to the 2x but I can still take advantage of the 48 MP. The same applies to using the Wide Angle because the Ultra Wide camera, like the Telephoto, has a smaller aperture which lends itself to poorer image quality. And the 240 mm… I use it a lot. I shoot Bayer RAW with it and the photos are amazing. Since I haven’t had any DSLR kit for 8 years now, carrying around some lenses and filters in a case the size of a book doesn’t really bother me and, like you, I always have my tripod in my truck. I don’t miss the heavy camera bag at all.
I am watching the playback, so I couldn’t submit my entry, but YES for a mini course on the retouching in LR for the picture that you shared at the beginning of the show
Good video. Thanks. I've done quite a lot of mobile photography recently. Was all set for the Samsung S24 ultra but wasn't impressed with the early reviews. In the end I went for the Oppo Find X7 Ultra which has definitely been the best mobile device for photography I've owned. Unfortunately it wasn't officially released here in the UK.
Hi Gyln very much enjoyed the show. This is just my opinion but I felt you both were going the wrong way in compering one or the other, l felt you both missed the middle way. That I believe to be The Sony rx100 range. I have 3 the mk iii - v - vii , I strongly believe you should try the rx100 mk v for your seascapes, it won’t fit your back pocket but it will most certainly in your front jeans pocket. Do your self a favour read the specks, and give one a try. At the now age of 80 if life has taught one the thing it’s the middle road that’s wins every time. But that’s just my opinion. “ps keep up the good work you are a true star😊
Edward I get what you're saying but I'm not going to be investing in a whole new phone system just to use it as a camera. It sounds great but I honestly don't see how it would improve on what I'm already getting out of my iPhone.
Yes, the phone is an awesome tool, but luckily not always and for everyone. Use it! But let's not limit you. If everyone in the world would only take photographs with the lenses that are built in iPhone, we would always have photos in same focal length (or cropped versions of it, but still same focal length). I would not want to buy another phone just for having a different focal length and most phones have something between 20-50mm on it. Dedicated cameras with exchangable lenses give us more variety. It can kill creativity but it definitely also adds variety overall in the whole industry.
I kind of get what you're saying but the lenses in the iPhone gives options from 14mm to 120mm (on 15 Pro Max and 16 Pro Max) so how is this any different to changing lesnes on a 'real' camera when it comes to everyones images looking the same???
@ but it is digital zoom. If I am not mistaken someone of you two mentioned that digital zoom is not what you prefer using. I have the iPhone 14 pro and even switching from the 24mm to the 77mm comes with a noticeable downgrade in quality. As well as with the 13mm of course. Also most people Already use 24-28mm because most people just start the app and take a photo. In my opinion the market is already a bit oversaturated with that focal range. Maybe that is also the reason why 35mm is so popular. I love shooting 20/35 on Sony with the g and gm lens for example. It looks always a bit different than my iPhone photos and I guess it is also about focal length.
@@flol3266 with the iPhone, when you switch from 14 mm to, say, 77 mm, you aren’t digitally zooming… sort of. In the Apple Camera app, if you have a good amount of light, it will actually use the 77 mm camera (and it’s a separate camera with its own sensor, not just a lens), but if the light isn’t bright enough, there is a point where the phone will digitally zoom the Main camera because it has a larger aperture than the Ultra Wide and the Telephoto. If you use a third party camera app, it will not do this. It will use the camera you actually select. The reason the quality goes downhill when you use the Telephoto camera is due to that smaller aperture. You just aren’t getting the same amount of light to the sensor.

Yeah it always amazes me how quickly these go by. Great to hear you're enjoying the mobile photography too.
Have a great week too 👍🏻

It’s horses for course.
