I absolutely love seeing my 2 favorite mentors together! There will always be people who view the world through a negative “lens”. You only get 1 life, why choose to be angry all the time? Personally I’m thrilled that 2 guys from across the world take their time to teach us and share their work! I always learn something watching both of you! The nature poet Mary Oliver says….go outside, be amazed, tell about it! Cheers!

These chat videos are just brilliant, I love the relaxed format with two great wildlife photographers together. They make a nice change from the regular gear reviews and educational content, though it’s still there. You are both fantastic, I’ve learned an incredible amount from you.

Hey Guys, I have been a Nikon user for over 54 years, but I have enjoyed watching both of you individually for the last two years. But today was the first time I have had the opportunity to see both of you together in a chat. I enjoyed it so much, I had to go find the other chat on Jan’s channel. Consequently, I would enjoy and look forward to seeing both in another chat session. Bring it on guys, I can’t wait to see your next chat. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!❤

My most recent frustration. Me and a buddy (mate) got up at 2:00 am, drove 3-1/2 hours to arrive with beautiful light, where a few snowy owls have been photographed. We found one sitting doing nothing. It was very cold and windy . I was wrestling with a 600 F4 on a monopod and the wind was shaking it all over the place and we were freezing. We watched that owl for oh I guess about an hour. We decided to move on to see if we could find some better action. There were other owls in the area that we saw flying. When we returned to the original spot there were a number of photographers all with amazing shots. The owl has put on an epic show up on a nice perch flying right at them for some amazing flight shots . Me and my buddy were so happy for them 😭

Thanks for sharing mate, I have a very similar story to this that will haunt me forever, I went on a sub antarctic trip to photograph Albatross and Penguins, I really wanted to capture the unique Albatross courtship dance. I waited for hours in the wet and cold but nothing happened. I decided to go and photograph something else. You can guess what happened as soon as I left, yep they displayed :-( I guess its a good reason to go back ;-) Cheers, Duade

Great Video Guys, Love this chat from you two its great would love to see more of this more often its great its almost like a podcast that i'm talking and agreeing with you guys across the table, I love how the passion really does shine through the videos and it really does resonate with me as I look up you two almost like online mentors and teachers although I am already knowledgeable with this subject I always like to learn and hear more no matter what and even the whole thing about the camera picking it up and smiling it really does relate with me, and its great to see and hear such helpful tips and tricks and also just the layout of the video being relaxing, Can't wait to see more! G'day Fin, thank you so much for the support, I apprecaite it. Glad to hear you enjoy the format of the chats. The 500 f4 IS II is a great lens and I have used it on the R7. The lens does seem to engage the IS the entire time which can be offputting but it happens on all mirrorless bodies for some reason. The IQ out of the lens is great. The R7 does have some AF inconsistencies and has rolling shutter so sometimes using EFCS is the better option if you dont mind the shutter sound. I think the R7II will hopefully be a big improvement. Cheers, Duade

My thoughts about purchasing an R1 is though I’m certainly no professional,we only live once. There’s a lot of things a person can spend their money on and have little to show for it. A great camera will also capture memories and moments a person will always have. I’ve been doing photography now for about 18 months and I actually enjoy it. Life is always full of regrets, however one should never regret NOT doing something they’re passionate about. I absolutely appreciate all of the insight and information you guys provide, believe me it’s truly inspiring and helps keep the passion of photography burning in my heart especially when I see the wonderful results you are able to capture.

G'day Duade & Jan, I was delighted not having to wait months (or years) before seeing you chat together again 😀 Really enjoyed this fun episode 👍
I'm not so surprised Jan went beyond a million shots per year .. As a total amateur not even shooting every week, I nearly averaged 100k images per year with my R5. And I fear with the R5ii it will be way to easy to beat that number 🙈
It's only a shame the few shutter count tools don't note the difference between ES count and MS/EFCS count .. and the bigger chains buying and selling second hand gear seem to assume huge repair costs are needed beyond a total of 75k images .. which is really B$ these days.

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Yes, it's so strange when people ask what the shutter count is on my R5's I'm trying to sell and then don't believe me when I said it will be less than 10k, cause I don't use MS

    • @Duade
      @Duade  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Thanks mate, yes, we hope to put these out on a semi regular basis. Yep, shutter count is not really that relevant on modern mirrorless if you use ES all the time. Cheers, Duade

I love your chat with each other! It touches on so many things. I think also when we as photographers that share our images, people think we just go out and and knock out a ton of bangers in one sitting. Not realizing that we share only the ones we are proud of and leave out 1737838 bad ones that we took while waiting around for 3 hours. 😂 Seeing photos online can really give a person the perspective that pro photographers ONLY take good photos.

I try to view outings as a great day out even without photography.
It can be a mental and physical challenge packing gear for a week long trip into the Canadian wilderness, fighting heat, or cold, or flies, and getting up at 4 am, only to paddle 6hrs and get diddly. But then, I’ll just stop paddling, many kilometers away from the nearest human, and look around me. Sometimes there’s not a single sound except a little sigh of wind in the trees and the scene is hearbreakingly beautiful.
    It’s soul altering. 🙂

I’m praying the upcoming Nikon Z9II includes a wiping feature.
I have a tendency to fill up a 1Tb card in a few hours. I consider that part of my work ethic. It is a lot more work to edit it than it is to shoot it, but that’s what it takes. Jan has the right attitude about shooting for those images that no amount of anticipating or planning can account for- and Jan’s results speak for themselves. Duade’s results, too. If Duade’s erstwhile critic was a photographer who could do as well or better, then I suspect he/she would have more class than to talk that kind of smack.
Those of us who are openminded and are eager to learn have as much to gain, or more, from the mistakes or frustrations or obstacles you two share with us as we do from your successes.

Enjoy seeing the two of you together, great job. With respect to rating photos, I have a habit of sometimes jumping around when reviewing photos so I have started using "1" for images I have reviewed but rejected. In the past when I didn't rate an image I wasn't sure if it was because I rejected it or skipped over it without looking. When I am done with a folder I just delete the "1"s. It is always good to hear what others do because generally there is not one right answer or way of doing things.

My interest in photography began in 1977 with a film OM1 and has progressed to my latest camera the R6. My biggest challenge has been the switch from making every shot count to using burst mode then having the patience to sift through all the images. As to those people who denigate those using burst by the expression "spray and pray", don't understand what value burst has for those very short time behaviours as Jan described. Macro has been my main area of focus (pun intended) but you gentleman have inspired me to do more bird photography, however my ultimate goal, while it has wings its not a bird, the Richmond River Birdwing.

Hey Jan, before I forget, I just wanted to thank you again for the heads up on the BIG price increase with Adobe. Even after you mentioned, I still almost let it get by me.... But took care of that this morning with 3 days to spare :) You saved me $60 ! TYSM :) For anyone here who missed that, the cutoff is Jan. 15th. Until then, you can buy it for $9.99 a month with a 1 yr subscription. But the monthly charge will go up from $9.99 to $14.99 !
Skill ? Ehhh... I just want a great shot :) lol I used to say I'd rather be the luckiest angler holding the lake record, than the "best angler" who got skunked :) lol I take somewhere around 200 shots, for each shot I actually use. 300 to 500 for 1 to make it to my Flickr page.

Very good video guys. I recently went on a bird photography trip to Ecuador and took over 30,000 photos in 10 days. I had never taken so many photos in a single trip and I still haven't had time to edit them all, but I was happy, because there were so many incredible species and excellent photo opportunities. I remember wanting to take a photo of the Sword-billed Hummingbird in flight and I noticed that at one of the feeders the bird was visiting more, but always very quickly. I chose my position and waited. I missed photos of several other species, but I focused on the photo I wanted to take of this species, which has always been a dream for me. After a few attempts and a long wait I managed to take the photo I had always dreamed of, with the Sword-billed Hummingbird in flight and with the focus completely sharp. I was very happy. I am very happy with my R7 and I think I will keep it for many years. I am very happy with the photos I have taken and I have photographed people, macro and landscapes with it, in addition to the birds.

My change for 2025 is to stop trying to edit all the filmstrip. I now cull before in import to folder. Import into lightroom where then grade 1 to 5. Keep 4and 5. Then work the best few in Photoshop. Before it was done in lightroom and then sync the setting across the burst i had taken and left disappointed. No longer spend less time in photoshop producing better pictures. Keep up the content, enjoy it all even if it is not always relevant to me and my Nikon. Bring it all on.

I subscribe to both of your channels and think the two-person format is great - as per the one Jan does with Glen Bartley as well. Excellent format. As far as negative & destructive comments go - simply, don't give them "oxygen". I'm off on a few trips this year and will try to fit in as much bird photography as I can. I am interested in how you manage your SSD,s and backup while traveling and how you integrate all your photos back into your systems when you return home. I know Jan doesn't use Lightroom Classic catalogs but I do and I am interested in how to best and simply manage that while away and when I return. Hi Duade, Really like these chats and getting both of your views, you have both convinced me to use higher FPS coming from a 7d ii and a 5DS I thought that higher FPS and pre-capture weren't needed, however after my 3 days a the wetlands (which I absolutely loved but could off done better, although it was one of my first birding days) and now having these features I am certainly going to be using them especially as I am after a Robin in flight. I don't mind going out in any weather and if I don't get a decent image (most times I don't) I usually learn something and its not often that I don't enjoy myself regardless off the photography discipline and I certainly struggle getting enough bird photography fitted in.

Love this type of more casual talk. It gives lots of information in a way that it is easy to process.
To the R7, i own one and use it as my main camera. With the R7 II coming i would say the best option is to wait forever the release of the R7 II. Buying new cameras shortly after release means you dont really know much about the camera and it perks. When waiting you can get reviews of others and then decide. An other upside of waiting is that the R7 Mark I will drop in price as soon as the Mark II is available to purchase. Also the used market Price will drop.

There’s two types of photographers when it comes to holding down the shutter and taking hundreds of photos.
The first does it the hope that they might just get something that’s a good out of it. This is the classic “spray and pray” and this photographer may luck out every now and again and get a good photo.
Then there’s the photographer that see’s a great opportunity, because of the lighting, subject matter, the action and the interaction between subjects. This photographer will regularly come away with great photos.

Thanks for another marvellous video. I echo a previous comment in that I would not buy the R7 now. I use it exclusively currently and have hit my frustration limit with the variable autofocus. I end up taking thousands of photos, not because I'm trying to capture the right moment, but simply because it's necessary in order to get some in focus photos. This is despite using the Canon RF 100-500 L lens -- the autofocus is just too variable on the R7 especially for distant subjects. When we're this close to the R7 mark II (assuming it fixes this issue which is by no means a guarantee) it makes sense to wait and avoid the frustration.

This one is another joy to watch. :) The 'burst' comment prompted me to reflect on our priorities with our photography. The performance capabilities and results the evolving technologies can provide can also create dilemas for some photographers - a kind of 'who really got that shot?' as we become able to capture images that previosuly would not have been possible, or probably very unlikely. A photographer that is fully aware of all that is happening between ourselves, in the camera, and the subject, these are the ones that the honest and knowledgable among us might previously favor to 'luck', knowing and admitting to ourselves and others that they were at least in part by chance. We were 'there' and ready in every way we could be, but especially in action photography it turns out the moment we would select as 'perfect' escapes use because that moment lasts for only a very short time - so short it falls between when we press the shutter and when a image is actually recorded. We may not even see the moment when it occurs - a blink of the eye, so to speak. With the faster frame rates of todays cameras, the chances of capturing the perfect moment, or at least having more choices of which moments are captured in greatly increased. That really perfect moment may still be missed, but the differences between one shot, and five or six fps vs. todays performance is dramatic. It comes with an expense that pales with the cost of acquiring the capability - the time it takes later to review all those captured moments and select out the best of them. That is a trade off between the possibility of getting the shot you really want, including ones you didn't see at the moment it was captured, and a practical assurance of not even getting close to what you wanted - but it was there. That seems like simply a trade-off in time and how you want to use it. That choice could understandably be very different between someone for which this is a hobby and one that does it professionally and one who consider time and success. But also, there is the artiste, for whom everything the camera does now is something taken away from them, their knowledge and experience and technical experience, and how that translates into what they can claim as an influence in the resulting image. When a capability in our cameras can do something that is essentially impossible for us to duplicate repeatedly, it makes sense that we look at how we can evolve to use it, to get images we could not, or problably would not have gotten otherwise. These are images we can share with others, in some case images no one would be able see otherwise. Fast fps and burst capabilities are a significant enhancement that can really pay off in results and, as with many other capabilities, it pays to understand the tradeoffs and then make choices as you encounter the right situation for using them. You have demonstrated this, as with so many other subjects, some people have a predisposition that misses the real point, and they are inclined to fully consider what is presented to them, and might be in their best interests. Happy New Year!

G'day Duade, Happy New Year to you and Jan. Just back from a holiday down in Tassie, and editing photos of a young Galah while listening to this video. To answer the question of "why do you take photos" you posed early in the video, I am getting so much enjoyment looking through these images I took rolling around uncomfortably on the grass shooting at eye level to the cute little Galah who didn't care about me watching it feeding. I remember how much fun I was having rolling around on the ground, cursing the autofocus not locking on, or cursing myself for just hitting the shutter button too late to capture a cool pose, or the pain of craning the neck to look through the viewfinder while prostrate. But all the time I was thinking how cool it is to get so close to what most people would think was an amazing bird to even lay eyes on, and laughing as the young bird played and raised its immature crest. I also spent some time with Eastern Rosellas just near Hobart CBD, just getting close to these flighty fellows and earning their trust, then being able to shoot from close range was very enjoyable indeed. I haven't done much birding of late, but this trip reinvigorated me to get back out there and photograph some of our amazing wildlife.

Really an enjoyable video this mates, and looking forward to the next. About the rude comments. I think people that gives comments like that are people that are jealous, or think they are the best in the world. I too take a looot of photos when i am out photographing, but only keep 5, maximum 10% of them on a good day. And if i get one or two that i edit, then i am very satisfied. A thing that frustrate me a lot, is if i stay in a place, trying to get a shot, and a car passing honking at me, scaring away the birds,. Or some people comes start speaking in the wrong moment, exactly when the action starts. I still have some birds here in Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, that i haven"t managed to get a photo of, so that is one of my goals for this year. And some of this birds are very difficult to see, but if it is one thing i have a looooot of it's patience, so waiting is no problem. Often sit in the same place 3-5 hours, without getting what i want. But i know that in the end, it will work out even if it can take many days and sometimes weeks. Like when i managed as the first person in history to photograph the jaguar here in this state. I was sitting out in the cold and humid nights for many many weeks every night, and yes it can get very cold here hehehe. But when you finally manage to get what you wished for, you forget all the "suffering" you have gone trough. Only problem was that i got totally obsessed with it, so i continued, and spend around 2000 hours with it, but also managed to photograp more 4 individuals during that time. So it was worth it for sure.
Once again thanks for a great video from you mates, and wishing you both a wonderful week.

Great to see you both again - happy new year! As for me, I have been lucky to capture shots of the Swift Parrot, Regent Honeyeater and Paradise Riflebird (one of my best) this year here in Queensland (not to mention my favourite, a Dusky Langur mother and baby in southern Thailand, my very favourite). However, many of my shots have been snatched (difficult not to with Swift Parrots!) and in 2025 I would like to get more considered shots. I do have health issues with carrying a tripod or monopod but am spoilt by the OM1ii/ 150-400TC combo so don’t need camera support when walking. However, maybe it’s time to sit in a hide for a few hours on occasion. Although getting down on the ground for waterbird shots really would be beyond me - I would need two fit guys to get me upright again! Happy shooting in 2025 everyone.

Wow, the million pics discussion was fantastic. So far, it would be the best pearl of wisdom for 2025. I fully agree, the hypocrisy of people claiming that all their images are great is laughable. Can't deny that spay and pay (oops) is a great strategy for wildlife, but at that level, what impresses me the most is not taking that many shots, but triaging and deleting them.

    • @jan_wegener

yes, deleting them is not a lot of fun, but a necessary evil for me and with it if I get what I wanted in the end

I enjoyed the comment about burst shots and wiping. Seemed a bit harsh. The only reason I don’t do a huge amount of burst shots is having to trawl through them all. I also know that I would need to do more and faster bursts if I wanted to get a decent bird in flight shot.

I really enjoy both your channel’s. To be honest I am neither a birder nor a wildlife photographer. I am a hobbyist photographer who mainly shot while on vacations, holidays, and spending time with the grandkids. I subscribe to both your channels for the shear enjoyment and knowledge I get from your channels. Looking forward to your next videos.

great video with your casual chat format. for those that remember film cameras, i think the success ratio was 1 winner per hundred images. and finding that image took so much time with the contact sheet, light desk and loupe. so we thought more than twice before shooting 100 images. and considering the cost, today’s shooting is a breeze. a few thousand images per shoot is nothing and costs only time. thank you for insight on photo gear. certainly beats me doing all the testing. looking forward to more videos from both of you. regards.

A delight to see you both together sharing your thoughts. One of the frustrating thing that I faced yesterday was buffering on R7 but a little different. For the primary sd card slot, I use a fast card and the secondary I use one of my older cards. The primary I have set for CRAW and secondary as JPEG with simultaneous writing as a redundancy. Even though shooting at short bursts, I noticed buffering, probably because the secondary card was slow to write.

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

That card must be extremely slow if buffering when using JPEGS? It may actually be the RAW card buffering?

My first swappable lens camera was the Panasonic G9 micro four thirds. I purchased it in 2018. At the time, I was mostly a filmmaker with ocassionally photography. It was good for a hybrid camera for my needs.
However, when I was trying to get the best bargain deal possible, I didn't know at the time, purchasing on Ebay would result in me receiving a "Grey Market" camera made for sale only in Australia.
When I received it, I noticed it on the box right away. I thought back then, that's cool, as long as it works just fine, and it did. I thought to myself, I'll just pretend that I'm filming and taking photos in Australia, haha!
When it came time to get it repaired due to the main board shorting out from using an external battery too powerful for it, no repair shop in the U.S. would work on it. Luckily, I was able to purchase a replacement main board from Hong Kong that was brand new, and I was able to repair it myself.
It took me a good 4 to 5 months before anyone would purchase it refurbished for a fair price. I upgraded to the Panasonic S5iix, which is the only one on the market that meets all my needs.
Maybe one day, I'll get out to Australia for some wildlife photography, pending enough money saved up. It would be cool to meet both of you and go on a wildlife photoshoot. That would be pretty amazing!

Thanks for sharing your experience, grey market was huge here for a number of years and still is to an extent, but now Canon offers a 5 year local warranty I think people are willing to pay a bit more for that peace of mind. Good on you for having the skills to fix your own camera. Cheers, Duade

I don't know if Gary Player was the first to say it, but he gets credit for it a lot..."The harder I work, the luckier I get." Occasionally a shot just sort of falls in your lap. But even when that has happened to me, I've looked back and realized that it was still the result of a lot of work to be in the right place at the right time. The thing I really hate when shooting birds are those days when it seems like all can get is butt shots, no matter what I try to do.
I got one of the early R5II's, and had it overheat. I posted the report, just to try and help the community, and said that I sent it back because I just didn't want to deal with an ongoing problem. I took a LOT of flack from people, like I had made it up. I have a couple of friends who had some early issues, but kept theirs - but they got their cooling grips and it doesn't seem to be a major issue anymore. But I was still a little surprised to hear that Duade uses the R6II as his primary camera.
I don't like to come to one person's YT channel and leave links to another. But I just saw an interview with Rudy Winston, who I'm sure you will recognize as the much-beloved Canon employee. I had heard that he had been "laid off" by Canon, and I don't know if he's back with the company. But in this interview he talks about the new AF capabilities and gives a lot of specifics. I think it's particularly good information for those who shoot birds. I hope you don't mind the link - I'll delete it if you do. th-cam.com/video/eIxK8B-_Kn8/w-d-xo.html

G'day, thanks for the feedback, and sharing your experience. I totally agree about that quote, the more you are out there the luckier you are. Once you learn behaviour and can start to predict what might happen it helps a lot.
Yeah I tried the original R5 and R6 in the field and they just overheated so when the R6II came and it never overheated for me I have just stuck with it for video. I use the RF24-105 F/4 in the field and it does everything I need as a light kit. Inside I use a faster 35 1.4 which does have annoying focus shifting which I was hoping would be added as a lens that the camera can correct but maybe I need to get a better lens for inside. Thanks for the link re the AF, I will check it out. Cheers, Duade

It was never a resolution, but I made my own calendar with images I've taken over the year and sold it to friends and family. I wanted to print my work to see how it looks outside of a screen and this was the best way to attempt it. Turned out better than I imagined and also I learnt a lot about editing for prints and how to improve it.

Just started watching and I'm thrilled to see you guys together👌
Without watching yet, I just want to tell my experience. Started with the R8, and I think it's a decent/good camera. Tradet it in and upgraded to the R6MKII, which is almost perfect imho.
Bought a R5, also because I started to do weddings and needed a second body. Appreciate the overall picture quality. But for low-light capability and because of the burst-mode, I usually use the R6MKII more for wildlife/birds.
Since I wanted more reach, I've had a hard time deciding, but traded the R6MKII for the R7. After 3 months using the R7, I've sold it again and bought a R6MKII again, since the AF is way better and since I have the RF 200-800 reach isn't that big of an issue.
Me personally, I would wait for the R7MKII. And if it had better AF and no rolling shutter, I would go for that.

I'm not a professional shooter so I put my R6-II through as much as it can handle. I tend to shoot in Duade's style of shooting in bursts. I've never ran out the buffer on either my R6-II or R7 shooting that way. It sounds like the R5-II needs that battery grip with the fan if you plan to do long videos. I've heard it's hard to get though. I'm excited to see what Canon will do with the R7 when the mark 2 comes out.

I'm personally looking to get the R7 mkii to compliment my R5. I'm hoping canon realizes how incredibly successful this camera would be if they approached it as a mini-R1. Solving it's rolling shutter and auto focus issues so that shooting exclusively in electronic shutter makes sense. I will keep my R5 as my primary body for landscapes and general purpose, but for wildlife and outdoor sports specifically I would love to marry it to my 100-500 as the ultimate lightweight action setup with an effective 160-800mm field of view at 7.1 aperture with near R1 focus performance. Fingers crossed canon gets it right this time.
