Thank you for your detailed review of this camera. I really appreciate your review of the kit lens as well. I think anyone watching your review will have a much better understanding of how - or if - this camera will fit into their lives.
What a lovely and clear review, thank you! I have been playing with a tiny manual focus lens with my X-M5. It's been a learning curve, but also lots of fun, and it made the camera even more portable and easy to always have nearby. Thank you for the great review!
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. I've also been considering manual lenses for the same reason. To make this absolutely tiny. Hope you keep having fun with it 😄
Wow. It's a really great review, and you making a lot of important notes, like having a proper light setup and composition set, rather than getting a flagman expensive camera. And that also viewers should consider their needs and specify their work style in order to choose a camera. Love that! (Coming from a perspective of a professional photo and video shooter)
thanks for this intro a pleasing tone - might you go through your settings for the software of the camera and some of the custom options in more detail
Thank you! I imagine there are some tutorials out already on the custom functions (by more advanced and knowledgable users than myself), and my next video will probably not be xm5 focused, but I'll write this down in my notes 😃
Yes quite understandable and there are other videos i just appreciate the language you use to talk about the camera - if it’s not too much to ask what 10 settings do you change in the general settings panels?
Great review - thank you for sharing your experiences. For your Q button blues you can remap that function to the AEL button on the back, which is much easier to access
Great video, hope you do well! Just one tip for you since you have glasses, play with the position of your lights to minimize their reflection in lenses, position them somewhere off to the side or above the filming area, just not behind the camera since that guarantees tons of flashes as your head moves in the frame. Cheers!
ah thank you! I realized while editing just how distractingly the light was glaring in my glasses. I'll definitely have to try a few different set ups next time and see what glares less 😃
@afternoon_coffee_house Hehe, I just wanted to point it out in case you missed it, it should have been obvious to me that you cought it though. It is clear you edit your videos with great care since you pointed out all the focus breathing in it😋
That is a really good review, thanks for the work. 👍It has raised a couple of "no go" points that now, after weeks of hesitation, I have decided I won't go for it. No stabilisation, plastic made, bad autofocus, bad battery life, no access to the battery without the extra kit if anything screwed on it ... well that is quite enough for me to think about maybe adding a couple of extra hundreds euros (yep I am from France 😉) on a camera that will fit my needs. I am quite disappointed because it is not the "miracle" camera the Fuji marketing and most TH-camrs are over selling ... but hopefully, I have seen your review, so thanks again ! I could even stay with my old Sony RX 100 M2 or Olympus OM-D5 ...
Thank you so much! There's definitely a lot to consider when getting a camera, and accessories you may or may not need complicate things, so I'm happy to hear that. The xm5 has been excellent for my needs so far, but it's not for everyone and sometimes sticking with what you already have is a great choice. Glad you figured out what works for you 😃
ah, thank you! I'm glad you liked the video. Unfortunately, I'm not sure. When I was looking at 15-45mm kit lens reviews, a lot of reviewers said that one of their "cons" for the lens was that you couldn't see the focal length on the screen, so I wonder if Fujifilm intentionally fixed that with the xm5 since users complained about it, and I'm pretty sure I had the focal length zoom pop up before I updated the firmware...I wish I knew the answer to that though.
Thanks! It being X-M5 specific could be the answer. Crazy to think they needed a whole new camera released in late 2024 to do this simple update. Looking forward to more content on your channel! I also have the Viltrox 56mm and love using it for portraits so would be curious as to your thoughts in a full video!
It must be a feature of X-series cameras having the latest processor and associated firmware (regardless of sensor) as to my personal knowledge you get it on the X-T50, X-T5 and X-S20, but not on anything with earlier processors. I presume it’s also a feature of the X-H2 and X-H2s on that basis. But, sorry, apparently not a feature available on the X-T30😢
@@Spikesw15 you're right, I just watched another video where the reviewer had an X-T5 and I could see the focal length on the zoom. Thanks for saving my time of going through Fuji settings!
I had the same problem with the kit lens! Just got the XM5 two days ago and almost thought it was defective until I stumbled upon a Reddit thread explaining about the firmware 🤦🏾♀️
On the matter of stabilization, this camera is a prime fit for the Crane M3S. Not a huge fan of the 15-45 but it's the right weight class for a body and gimbal combo like that.
thanks! Glad you like the channel 😃 hope you enjoy your x-m5 when it comes. And my other channel is "Sarah Park-Matott" it's 90% freestyle skateboarding haha 10% other skating
I have been looking to get into cameras (upgrade from iPhone) and I was wondering if you are able to move the quick menu to a custom button? As a total beginner I have no idea about what isn’t possible haha. Thanks for any response!
I actually saw it for the first time after I pre-ordered the xm-5. The S9 looks awesome, and it's even full frame, but I ultimately decided to stick with the fuji and not cancel😃It's on my radar for hopefully one day being able to test out though!
Can someone explain the odd attraction to red add-on shutter button thingies ? They have a history of damaging cameras and limiting function but amateur photographers find the little fashion accessories hard to resist.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I briefly had a tx20 and really hated the shutter button. So, I wanted to try out a soft shutter this time and have loved it so far.
The soft release button is not a good idea imho. Not if youre camera at all gets regularly shoved in and out of a bag,, or even clothes. It creates an anchor point on a sensitive mechanism not designed for the lateral forces.I see the appeal of them but ive also seen them damage damage cameras over the yrs. it just has to hit or pull hard enough and that's it. Anyway. my two cents. if you use one just be careful. cheers. Looks like a great camera.
@@afternoon_coffee_house You can get a mini shutter button that is dome-shaped, just covers the shutter button and most importantly, sits flush with the shutter release which reduces the chances of it catching on something. It can source it at squarehood.
Features-wise I did really want a mechanical shutter for photos and the 6.2K open gate recording. I was also drawn to other systems like fuji & lumix when I first entered the photo/video niche but afraid to miss out on that autofocus, but now that I'm more relaxed and confident, I felt ready to re-invest in the systems I actually wanted to 😃
@@afternoon_coffee_house I have a Sony A7RIII, and old Canon and Nikon DSLRs. The Sony is far better for near everything, but I don't know why I prefer the other cameras 😅. I have heard a lot of times things like "Sony doesn't inspire me" "I prefer Fuji because I took better photos with Fuji even if the AF and technical quality isn't the best", etc. And I'm starting to understand that at least for photography.
I used my fx30 for that. But, it was indeed my last shoot with it. It's boxed up and leaving today 😃 Now, my two main cameras are the x-m5 and the pocket 3.
Thanks a lot for your reviews! Considering this one for photo and video or DJI Osmo Pocket 3 for video and my iPhone for photo. Still can't decide which way to go. From the one hand xm-5 have much better photo capabilities, option to upgrade the lenses, 6k and better Log profile. But the lack of IBIS is really bothering me, plus the autofocus from videos I've seen looks weird, and misses from time to time. On top of that, the price is going to be like 2 times more, compared to the osmo, and if we want sharper deeper quality and top lenses is going even higher. But, the overall quality of the footage on xm-m5 is better so I still cant decide, I go with the picture quality or portability and small size + better price. What is your thoughts on this? Idk how to decide still. Watched so many videos about both cameras but can't find example of xm-5 with a gimbal though...
hmm...it's tough to make a recommendation without understanding how you want to shoot or your priorities...however, image quality aside, I think they're very different devices. If you love videography and photography, I think the xm5 is a system that you can grow with over time. You can get the kit lens, learn the controls, sharpen your skills and upgrade to say better lenses as you improve. If you don't mind the extra gear, you can get a gimbal. Or you can adjust to more tripod shooting if that's okay with you. The osmo pocket 3 on the other hand, like a phone, is more of a "all-in-one"..."I want a device to just wake up and take the shots" kind of camera. You can learn with it and grow a little bit. But, it's meant to be an all in one device, so it's limited in controls, features and the ability to grow through say new lenses. But, this camera could help you prioritize carrying it around and getting the shot. It's also going to be better for lots of walking, pans and camera movements thanks to the gimbal. It really depends on your priorities. I haven't watched many reviews since I bought it, but I do know a Japanese channel (Akiya Movie) who was commissioned by Fujifilm to make one of the promotional videos for the camera--not a review. But he does use a gimbal for a lot of the shots in that short-film. th-cam.com/video/rU9ZZ3i5TlA/w-d-xo.html That's the only video I'm aware of at the moment. A lot of the exercise and walking shots were gimbal shots.

07:52 You are skipping the world's most underrated camera brand, Olympus. Olympus' entry level cameras have incredible IS, at this price range it's unbelievable
ah that's a great point. Olympus does make great ibis for incredible prices. I'm only familiar with the micro four thirds sensors, which I would consider a slightly different niche in the market. But that's an excellent place to look for IBIS at a better price point. It should be higher on my radar too! Thanks for the good addition 😃
Over 18mths ago Fuji releases the S20 essentially a PASM xt40 which rightly so receives meh reviews and soon surpased by much improved specs of the xt50. Then they decide to re-release the S20 without IBIS and a viewfinder in smaller body. And stick on the worse kit lens in the fuji line up. And boom M5 blows up. Go figure.
haha the right marketing can make all the difference in targeting the market, but I think the X-S20 was like $1,300 just for the body, wasn't it?...I would say that's a slightly different market even in terms of just the cost of entry. I probably wouldn't have switched to this camera at that cost either even if it had ibis still.
It's not a fair comparison to the x-s20. You're comparing an "M" series camera to a "S" series Fuji. Price and size alone make it an unfair comparison. And the 15-45 is a good lens. It has its uses. It's better at 16mm than the Fuji prime 16mm/2.8, lighter and a couple of hundred cheaper.
oh I agree. I'm not sure why they chose the film sim dial for this. Maybe to keep it feeling more "simple" for a more beginner targeted niche? You can map the front dial for film sims too, so I would have liked it to be something else myself.
