    The JY_VLOG is a series of semi-daily videos about my life living abroad in China. Early videos follow my expedition up Everest, and future videos will follow me as I cycle around the world from Ningbo, China to Los Angeles, USA. But for now, the VLOGs follow my everyday life in China, and give you a glimpse thru my lens at what its like to live in Asia, and all the hilarity and drama that ensues. Ohh.. and I have a reef tank, fly drones and ride trikes… so if that wets your fancy, subscribe to see more every day.

    Hey guys. I think I need to chime in here. I support all my vlogger friends. I typically have been not deleting personal negative attack comments because I like to leave the comment section free to grow. So many people with different viewpoints can discuss things back and forth here, sometimes aggressively, and that is ok with me. You can hate me or like me, that’s fine. But that being said, I appreciate Winston ( +serpentza ), Matt ( +Laowhy86 ) and most of the other China Vloggers.
    Are our videos different??… of course.
    But variety is what makes the world go around. Bashing him in comparison to me or bashing him in general on my channel is something I am going to start putting my foot down about.
    I made a couple videos with him because I like him. He is popular, had a great audience, and I have things I can learn from him. And as I have made some video with him I appreciate him more. I consider him a friend, and as I look back on this comment section I have started to ask myself if I would allow anyone to speak of my friend the way some of us have in here.
    That being said, if you want to compare our styles, or speak of a constructive critique, that is appreciated. If you are simply name-calling or degrading, you might find your comment missing and this is the reason. I don’t want my channel known as a place where chastising a fellow creator is encouraged or welcome. I hope you understand and stick around, but if not, I appreciate the time you have given my video so far and wish you well.

      Titles like you will never be chinese ? And then they give very good reasons why they feel that way. Do you know any foreigners who have gotten a green card or citizenship in china , without investing major money ?? Any gripes they have are backed by very good reasons, and this comes from someone else who has been to china.

    I‘ve been watching SerpentZA's vlog for quite a long time(over two years). I appreciate his efforts in trying to show his perspective of "true" China to many people who has interests and indeed he's done quite a lot. But his style took a turning somehow to a more critical and misleading way(I know he doesn't mean to be negative ). As a Chinese who's also been to several other countries, I know it's not wise to say something conclusive about another country or culture basing on what I saw somewhere sometime. What really pissed me off a little bit about his vlogs recently are the pictures and titles he chose to put out as a cover, misleading and sketchy like hell from my perspective. I still watch his vlogs on occasion but I guess they might be more intended for some foreigners who's new to China or something. And that's why I like your channel better, more open-minded and pleasant to watch but still showing the truth rather than focusing on the perspectives. But I know you two just have your own styles, so I wish you all go luck anyway.

      The food Ranger has more than 500K subscribers and he uses zero Winston dirty tricks to attract viewers.

    • @jasonstone7431
      @jasonstone7431 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Actually I don't think Winston's "tricks" are "dirty" or something. If he had pulled any tricks to get attention, I think that's what many vloggers do. Generally, Winston is just speaking out what he think is true and that's his freedom but I think he should be prepared for what's coming for him especially after getting larger size of viewers in and out of China( sometimes he sounds like angry or confused about the negative parts of this but I think it is the outcome of sharing one's perspective rather than merely focusing on stories or descriptions like "the JaYoe Nation". I like the documentary stuff Winston and Cmilk made and it keeps reminding me why I subscribe them in the first place. Maybe it's like a marriage, after living in the same place for quite a period, they begin to feel a little overwhelmed or tired. And China surely have many lousy problems for people living here( despite the origin). So I couldn't blame them. As a viewer, I just hope they can lift their spirit and solve the problems with an open mind, maybe trying to know more Chinese friends and asking for their perspectives and solving problems together.

    • @youpiecurry8952
      @youpiecurry8952 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Jason Stone
      You're not alone. I had subscribed them both for many years. I started to watch their videos when C-Milks was still in inner-Mongolia. But their behaviors had changed drastically last year. Many titles of their videos becomes click baits or/and provocative and overgeneralizing. Both of them, especially Serpentza becomes very condescending and view their so called "true" thing always with negative perspective and generalization. Because of these and for other reasons, I decided to unsubscribed both of them two months ago.

    • @jasonstone7431
      @jasonstone7431 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah I really had the feeling of the drastic change in the last year from their vlogs. I can only imagine some shitty things must really piss them off somehow to let them want to voice out their feelings or send some messages to many "westerners" living or considering living in China. Of course that's not interesting for me and sometimes quite annoying because I can spot many biased or overgeneralizing points they continually made without checking or holding back a little bit. But on the other hand, maybe it is somehow useful to others who might get into trouble or confused by what they encountered in China because these original piece of information is rare on TH-cam even now( and there seems no Chinese sharing their stories and perspective here). But I really hope they can have more Chinese locals to check or expand their views if they really want to develop their vlogs into some sort of "channels" to help people outside of China to know China better. I feel they kind of wanting to achieve that so that's why they recently use more comparisons than before and make their videos more official rather than a casual vlog, and this kind of style got them into more trouble because it seems that their perspective might have much bigger influence on others and others are more likely to believe what they said(it can be called getting more "political" even though they're not talking about political issues). So of course there're more viewers upset(let's not count in many so called trolled Chinese comments) not to mention some viewers are just confused by their change of "mood". But I still thank them for their contributions to sharing more angels of China's stories and many of their ideas or stories are still inspiring no matter what. After all, TH-cam isn't very "friendly" about China especially there're more western propaganda channels than genuine information providers.

    • @yanp4735
      @yanp4735 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      1, Serpenza depends on TH-cam ad financially and he finds that his negative/overgeneralized videos sell better--more viewers more comments. I observed this too.
      2, he and his wife visited U.S for a couple of weeks, he bought a fancy car, stayed in house, sightseeing, and other cool stuff. Not like in China they live a life there, working, worrying about money. Now they want to move to US but cannot. His wife may give him pression, which he feels. He turns to frustration and anger with China.
      Above is my guessing why he changed since last year.

  • @TheAllen501
    @TheAllen501 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Actually the Winster guy had a lot of misconceptions and prejudice (not on everything to be fair), stuff that he interpreted his own way, and sometimes it could be just bullshit. Everything has a reason and there were reasons for him to get those "griefs". Same thing as myself, when I left a bad comment about America on youtube and I got attacked by some racists Americans. Also, it's the same when I gave objective opinions to some of the Chinese people on subjects such as LGBT, I also got frequently got attacked. Yes, I did fight against the main stream Chinese mentalities a lot of the times when I felt they were wrong and narrow-minded, it's not about where I originally came from, it's about the truth. I dislike some of the opinions of Serpentza, because it's about whether their misinterpretations are gonna be transfered to the whole world and mislead more and more innocent people and eventually contributes to more and more biased minds and hurts on my identification.
    I myself, carry this identification living in the West, very familiar with both of the two very different cultures and mentalities. People use stereotypes and treated me in a stereotyped way sometimes or asked me very stupid questions. It didn't make me feel any good. When I was in China before, a lot of the Chinese treated me very meanly. Some Chinese who had been working with Japanese for over 10 years said I had a typical Japanese charactor (I didn't know any Japanese at that time). Sometimes, I don't even know why I have to stand out and speak for those Chinese who have treated me meanly, maybe because of the visible Chinese identification that made the way that the whole world perceive me.
    Now I know a Japanese, and he behaved like very incredulous and vigilant every time we had a chance to talk, and some of the stuff he said was very weird and from what he said I could always feel he placed me on a level where I don't belong, simply because he thought I carried this identification. Anyway, it's very tiring to change one's deeply ingrained prejudice and I just don't wanna bother and thus have been learning to ignore, as long as there are no real "problems" occuring to me. Speaking of this, I DO believe that misconceptions and misinterpretations from these two guys contributed a lot to these awkard situations to myself and also to many other oversea Chinese. And i am sure a lot of the local Chinese have realized since long time ago that China has a lot to improve, especially the younger generations. However, the older generations have gone through extremely difficult times of poverty, famine and violence, the most famous among which is the so-called 10-year culture revolution when Mao zedong wanted the Chinese people to abolish all the Chinese traditions and no younger citizen was allowed to have a decent education and once they finished junior middle school they had to be sent to the least developed areas of China for primitive agricultural work. That's how the dictator Mao Zedong tried to control the nation's minds and sort of made the entire nation have some indecent rural habits.
    The Laowhy guy used to be a dickhead and had many more prejudices and bullshits than Winster. (It seems to me that Winster had become more and more like a complainer after he had met him). There are just too many white supermacist in China, they complain and threaten to leave years after years but never leave. And I am very disgusted by this, what makes me hate the most about the modern Chinese society is the complicated people relationships, the hostilities and competitions between Chinese and other Chinese. In this way, I hate to be Chinese and wished that I was born and grew up in a more nation of solidarity and kindness. I know you might not be able to sense this at all cuz you are American, but generally speaking, I believe that Chinese treat foreigners especially caucasians MUCH nicer than they treat the other Chinese. The Laowhy guy had sooooooooooooo many prejudices that he used to bring his super ugly wife everywhere and complained about everything he saw in a very obvious and condescending manner and launched out whatever ridiculous and bullshit remarks. So.... this is why, simply by seeing his face now, it makes me feel disgusted. This guy seemed like an asshole in many of his videos, and you can tell that he doesn't know anything. So.... definitely, people with Chinese identifications, whether they are more western minded or local Chinese minded, many people hate him, I'm sure. And it must have surprised a lot of ppl by seeing you three going together, cuz you yourself most of the time present a very understanding, easygoing, lovable and pleasant positive image compared to the other two.
    For myself, the reason that many people hate the Laowhy guy and the Serpentza is NOT simply because Chinese ppl have glass heart and are intolerant of diversed perspectives, it's because whether their personal perspectives and terrible interpretations represent the bloody truth or not. You just hear too many western jerks bullshit these days.
    My ex-BF was a caucasian Swiss and he bashed on China for almost everything, at the beginning I was sympathetic with him until one day he brainlessly uploaded a blog boycotting the Yulin Dog Meat festival saying that "Chinese blah blah blah", and there was even a Chinese flag on the thing he posted on his facebook. You know the Filipinos hate Mainland Chinese, right? cuz they covet the South China Sea territory for economic interests in the oil industry, the territorial conflict was originally caused by the US govt and Vietnam. China has a lot of political bullshit following it. Anyway, so this Filipino bitch and some of his other Filipino friends in Australia and NZ began cursing on Chinese. At that time, I experienced a series of discriminations in Canada, I knew some ppl hate me when as soon as they see my east asian face, simply because in these ppl's minds, there's always a "us" and "them", and I am sure the ignorance in the west and other parts of the world had been generated from dickheads like Laowhy. Guess if the Chinese ppl like him or not, and even those who support their opinions often take advantage of these dickheads, cuz these white faces say something that they want to say themselves.
    I broke up with that complaining Swiss guy long time ago. While he was posting a Chinese national flag and bashing that Chinese are underclass humanbeings by eating dogs, he didn't even know that eating dog meat used to be a European tradition and even today in 2017 three percent of the Swiss population are still eating dog and CAT meat as a traditional receipe. They Swiss people complain about everything, such as "This Thailand newspaper kiosque should sell Swiss version magazines!" or "Why the hell is the bus late for one minute?" or "Chinese are peasants ....." or "Americans are so fucking stupid, so stupid that it's even beyond your imagination!! Third world America!!!" or "That big ass girl, if she's not stupid American, I will let you sit on my head!!! Fat, cuz they always eat donuts, only the stupid Americans, they think they are the best!!!!" or "blah ... blah .. blah..."
    Don't bash if you don't wanna be bashed, really simple. They had griefs???!! LMAO... LOL!!!!

      I finished reading your long comments and can totally relate to how you feel (Thanks for taking long time to compose this, it would be better if the words were more organized). I personally came across lots of ignorant & narrow-minded white racists who have never stepped out of the small towns they live in their whole life, whose opinions have been greatly manipulated by their political mainstream media, who complain about everything in their life everyday, who never admit/accept any constructive comments about themselves/their life. “Move you stupid, it’s red light, didn’t you see?” “Those immigrants they are ruining America they shall be deported from US” “Chinese people they eat dog meat. They are so inhuman” Of course the most common one is “China is a communist country”. I hope to meet some open minded people that know how to respect other cultures. I know they exist here.

      Well, where are YOU getting your information from? 😉
      It can be hard to learn details if some shady stuff has happened. For example, you could read about Hawaiian passenger ferries that were sold to the military due to changed reef protection laws, and not find the bits about how it was all set up so the military could buy them for a bargain.
      So in the case of the Ancerville, Wikipedia states the ship was sold "due to competition from airplane services", without any source for that information.

      @@ztpan7587 Ja Yoe has family, and business ties in China that he has to worry about. He can't speak negatively about China or they will throw him in jail.
      SerpentZA also has a Chinese wife, and did have a business in China. He posted Many videos about China that said positive things. He has also spoken about problems in China. That is balanced reporting. And most people around the world expect that from truthful reporters. Nothing in this world is perfect.
      Because of the few negative things he has said about China, the Chinese police were hunting for him. Because of that, he escaped from China so they could not arrest him. He got his wife and child out too, but he probably lost most of his life's savings.
      To anyone who is not Chinese, it is obvious that the Chinese government is oppressive, and blocks free speech.
      I'm pretty sure that Ja Yoe is thinking about how to get his investments in his Chinese business liquidated and sent out of China without it raising suspicion. I'd be surprised if he hasn't spoken with his wife about leaving the country. From what he's shown of her in the past, she will not leave. That means it is up to him to decide if he is going to stay or leave without her. But he has a daughter to think about too. He will not say anything negative about China until he is out of there. If he does leave, he will still not speak negatively about China because his wife will stay there, and he won't do anything to hurt her.

      It is clear which one is being more honest, and it's clear that China punishes people who speak honestly about them.
      If someone wants to see the real China, they need to go to Taiwan. Mao killed most of what produced real Chinese culture on the mainland.
      China is ran by a totalitarian regime that is thin skinned and can't tolerate people pointing out its flaws. It hates free speech, and that is shown by its restrictions on outside internet access.

Some how there was element of high interest in your presentations, captivating. Today, 25th July 2020, I viewed a Nathan Rich vlog "revealing" Serpentza"s behaviour, comments on China, etc. I then read through quite a few readers who commented negatively on this Serrpentza"s attitudes on China. It's after all a v. large country, like U.S. Good video. Matt must visit some new structures like glass bottom bridges & that incredible sea bridge that connects H.K., Macao, Zhuhai bridge some day!

    Serpent was much cooler before 2018/19 or so lol, he seems like such a level headed person in this video. Cool video as always Matt.

    • @ebenezer2745
      @ebenezer2745 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      He was much 'cooler' before the Chinese government started introducing forced labour camps, destroying free speech in Hong Kong despite continuous protests by the people of HK, imprisoning journalists and threatening doctors for warning the world about Covid in the early stages (the list goes on...). I will call out Western governments for their awful behaviour and will certainly do the same for the CCP. If you endorse such a regime, as Matt does, you're complicit in their evil actions. Have a think about that you next time he posts a pro-CCP video...

      @Abigail Hi Abigail. Thanks for getting back to me as I love to shed light on this topic for the ill informed. I don't see a problem in an individual criticizing a regime that as we speak in running forced labour camps in Xinjiang. A regime that has suppressed free speech in Hong Kong. A regime that that murdered over a million Tibetans. A regime that (the list is endless). I openly criticize Western governments for their abhorrent behavior and will CERTAINLY do the same for the CCP. After all, two wrongs don't make a right. If you enjoy the torture of innocent people then you carry on. However, if the reason that you no longer like Winston is because he is against such practices then I truly feel sorry for you and your family. Big kiss Abi x (p.s. try living in China, learning Mandarin and conducting some research on the CCP from neutral sources - it allows a greater understanding of this subject. Good luck!)

      @Abigail What an intellectual and insightful retort there. Although, not sure forced labour is particularly humorous but I like your laid-back approach nonetheless Xxx

    the contrasts one can find in large cities are always very striking. It seems even more obvious in China as the more modern districts are brain new and very impressive. The view of the city older is very interesting

    I might have watched SerpentZA's video once. Don't remember if he was criticizing China in that particular video. I don't mind criticisms as long as they are either passionate or constructive. Consistently being grumpy is just depressing.

    Really enjoyed this vlog! I really like the alley ways and old parts of Shenzhen. The word 'dichotomy' is exactly right....and I'm very attracted to the gritty and grime, next to the skyscrapers. A question though....at the 18 min mark of drone footage...so many of the roofs are blue; do you know why? Keep smiling, and it is a pleasure to watch you.
