God Is Speaking-But Are We Ready to Listen? - Bishop Barron’s Sunday Sermon

  • Friends, as we return to Ordinary Time, today’s readings have a very practical and timely message. We find, in the first reading, the prophet Samuel and his mentor, Eli, working together to understand the call of the Lord. We, too, need to work to discern his call through our deafness and the noise of our culture. God is not one voice among many, but a hidden and mysterious voice that is difficult to discern even in the best of conditions. We are called to listen closely for God’s voice and to look for the modern-day Samuels.

I do wonder who the people are who give a “thumbs down” on Bishop Barron’s sermons. It seems a goodly number are those disenchanted with the sexual scandals of today. Yet the good Bishop addresses that very notion today (and at other times). Believe & Trust!! As I watched, I wondered who are today’s Samuels? Bishop Barron is one. Fr. Dave Pivonka is another. Chris Stefaniak as well. Dare I say anyone here who listens, believes and trusts is as well within his/her sphere. Let us be the salt and light so we can lead others to our Savior by our life and love. Grace and Godspeed !!

Bishop Barron speaks from the heart and offers truth here about contemporary RCC. Accordingly, I’ll offer the following: Priests need to be taught how to offer a clear, concise, and insightful homily at mass. I’ve heard all the rationales and reasons why lay people should not be deterred by poor homilies. Message received but with all due respect, while the height of mass is obviously the Eucharist, one cannot inspire future Samuels with repeatedly uninspiring homilies. I’m thankful to have access to the Bishop’s homilies. He was an inspiration for my returning to the church nearly a decade ago. 🙏

I apologize in advance for being "preachy" but I would like to point out that Ordinary Time is not a reference to a time that is ordinary; rather "Ordinary" used in this sense means counted time. Nevertheless, I completely agree with you that Bishop Barron's sermon is indeed extraordinarily good.

@@jeanpollock3206 The pandemic has not been planned by anyone. Since the 1950s over 60 zoonosis (diseases passing form animals to humans) have been identified. They includes, AIDS, Ebola, SARS, Zika and Covid-19. If Trump had not recalled all those public health experts the Obama govt had stationed in China to help the Chinese improve their health issues and to promote international cooperation Covid 19 wouldn't have devastated the world at all. It would have been nibbed in the bud. Sound governance is very important. Please do not speak from ignorance.

The way I hear this message as it applies today is that in the midst of this chaos and destruction of our social fabric God is speaking in lifting us up through the Christians who I follow who have been turning to God and sharing messages of scripture on a regular basis. And for me this applies to the leaders and the voices I trust in the political realm who are deeply faithful in Jesus Christ. So these people having no way to calm the Discord instead are turning to God and they're for spreading the message of God. People like Candace Owens, Jenna Ellis, Jack Posoiebic, Kailey McEnaney, Mike Huckabee, Paula White who is Trump's spiritual advisor, and so many others where I go on Twitter. I have been so uplifted by everyone speaking the truth and power of the scriptures. So even though we are kind of in a civil war God is strengthening our faith. I get so depressed and discouraged by the current affairs and then I listen to a bible message like this to calm myself and feel my faith grow and the feeling of peace and comfort. God bless Bishop Barron. And God bless my fellow Christians here who are also feeding themselves the Spirit of Love through Christ Our Lord. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Agreed, dear Bishop, the Samuels of our time have emerged and are speaking out. There is hope in the midst of the chaos and chastisement. Many priests and a few bishops are visibly standing with and for the faithful. His church is alive and as formidable as ever. The darkness has grown considerably as has the power and effect of the light. It must not be hidden now but yielded and wielded.

I enjoy your weekly Sunday Sermon immensely, Bishop Barron and I'm convinced we have a bit of Samuel in you. We need your catechetical instruction, and that of others, to help deepen our understanding of God and our relationship with Him. That said, I would encourage all to start their search within their local parish - there is a priest, a deacon, a religious, or a member of the laity who is hearing the voice of God and who can help you with the same. We need to be in communion with one another at the local level, rebuilding our churches from where we stand. Maybe a new mantra for 2021 attached to everything you do online - go and serve the Lord and bring it back to where you stand. Love the work you do, and praying for more.

Great sermon dear Bishop Barron, blessed be God 🙏.
*As regards, Samuel sleeping in the sanctuary, I would like to add that it was a practice in Asian churches untill a few decades back.* Devotees with special prayer intentions were allowed to sleep inside the church, some even inside the sanctuary area.
I am the one who slept near the altar of St. Anthony Church in our village, for about two weeks , that was in 80's.
Yes , that sleeping on that hard floor and subsequent change of my prayer life, really changed my life.
Hence sleeping of Samuel was indeed a real fact and not denoting any lack of spirituality. 🙏🙏

    We are all Samuel.
God is shouting to us from melting icebergs, rising oceans, children in cages at the border, acidifying oceans, the affects of worship of icons - money, power, prestige, stuff. The pandemic rages and kills because of our own ignorance, our own lack of carrying for each other. And on and on.
It is not just "special" people, it is all of us who can hear and must act.
The only hands God has are at the ends of our arms. Time to stop asking God to do our will. Time to listen and start doing what is right and moral. In other words, God's will.
