      I was atheist at one time, but was always hopeful that there was something more. Finding God was like jumping off a cliff into the dark abyss only to be caught up in the arms of Someone who loves me. God bless you!

    God said in Isaiah, “Even to your old age, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you.” You never get too old for God to carry you. As much as you love carrying your small children, holding them, protecting them, making sure they feel safe and secure, Your Heavenly Father loves carrying you. When you’re tempted to worry, feel overwhelmed, “I don’t think I can make it through this sickness. How can I make it through this loss? These people at work are not fair.” Instead of worrying, just say, “God, I thank You for carrying me. I don’t see a way, but I know You control the universe. You’re my provider, my protector, my deliverer, my way-maker.” The fact is God is carrying you right now, but if you don’t recognize Him, you’ll live stressed out, upset. No, you’re in your Father’s arms. He’s holding you tightly. Nothing can snatch you away.
    Thanks for reading this comment, I hope you are blessed and uplifted by it. We are a new and growing channel, your support and blessings is much appreciated. Thanks and God bless you. Amen

      Wonderful stories/myths but all from mans imagination, the question is there a god/creator is still unanswered either, what the catholic church/barron does is hijack the possibility and turn it into something ridiculous, it stunning how barron can invent so much and get paid for it, the catholic church ability to talk about what it cannot possible know is stunning

    I love the metaphor and narrative about God waiting and watching at top of the road for His children!!! I was that returning son and I did not return as humbly as the prodigal son. Coming back in the right humility creates the true celebration and this took a number of years!! Ironically, today, I felt this celebration through a supreme gift that came my way preparing me for this homily!!! Thank you. Bishop Barron for your description and eloquence about the depth of Our Father's Love!!!

    Outstanding thank you! I remember the day it dawned on me of how to parent. It was a day I was so angry at my child I didn’t know what to do. I prayed for God’s guidance and I looked up and saw the cross. I thought I am God’s child and Christ died for me a sinner, a disobedient child because of love. I realized that is how I should be as a parent. Constantly love and forgive.
    This homily wraps my prior experience into a nice neat package and helps me understand why I saw that cross at that specific moment. Thank you!

    I am a 77 year old catholic and former seminarian. Never have I heard the complete biblical meaning of this parable. Part of my soul aches that my Church has programmed me to the redemptive algorithm of the older son: « Follow the program, and heaven is for the taking. There will be no godly reason to hear no to the Father’s house » In a way « You owe me, God. » Somehow, I feel angry at my Church and yet so deeply grateful to Her for her gift of gifting this man, this priest. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. And now, I am up for learning something different: gifted gifting.

      @@davido3026 First, dear David, if you are christian, I hope you’re going to pray God that He helps you have a more decorous behavior online, ok? “You need help” is not a charitable expression, nor are the unnecessary multiple exclamation marks. Second - nowhere in the parable we get the idea that the older brother wanted to follow in the younger brother’s footsteps. My point is that this parable works only at the spiritual level, not at the practical, commonsensical level, where the principle “the more you work, the less you get” doesn’t make any sense.
      Because there are many people out there, who, like me, left their nepotistic country (for me: Italy) looking for a work environment that values merit. And I found it, thank God. So we need to be careful not to confuse the great message of this parable with an anti-meritocratic stance.

    OUR MODERN Church IS the parable of the prodigal son. We have squandered our inheritance, rejected what has been jealously guarded and passed down to us through the tempestuous centuries. In our arrogant pride we discarded the seamless garment of Christ. Our Father waits for us to return - to the Ancient Mass the Usus Antiquior, the traditional social doctrine, and the teachings of the Doctors and Fathers. These 3 pillars stand and fall together.

    My aunts baby has been in the hospital for 3 months now on the verge of death. I am Catholic at heart but it’s difficult to understand or even fathom the idea of why God gave the gift of the baby, but now that baby is dying. Anyone have any thoughts?

    • @sandyv2195
      @sandyv2195 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't know, but I feel your pain. One thing I do know is there are so many painful things I will never understand in this earthly life that I MUST trust in God and lean not unto my own understanding (Proverbs 3:5). God bless you, your aunt, and the sweet baby. Praying for you all. 🙏

    • @glynissequeira5544
      @glynissequeira5544 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do not know. God knows. Ask God.
      What makes you think that the baby will die?
      Why do you not think that the baby can live, that prayers can be made to God to heal the baby and God may heal the baby?
      Matthew 8 : 2
      A leper came to Jesus and knelt before him, praying, "Lord, if you will, you can make me clean". Jesus said, "I will; be clean".
      (see James 5 : 14)
      The parents of the baby should call for the elders / presbyters / priests of their church, and let them pray over the baby, anointing the baby with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the baby.

    Lost & found. Man found lost sheep, woman found lost coin, but the older brother did not go and find the lost younger brother. In any case, rejoice for each person that is found & return to God. Such a intriguing parable.

    5:35 In this aspect, divine life is like effect of a current crossing a barrier. This effect adds value, not the amount of material at any one location.
    The job of the garden hose it to provide a pathway for the water. If you grip it too tight or step on it, the flow stops. By reducing the resistance on the hose, allowing more water to flow out, you increase the flow.
    Blood circulates through the vascular system of the body. If a blood vessel or artery is blocking the flow, this can casue negative consequences for part or all of the body.
    The more electrons that cross a filament, the brighter the light emitted.

    You explained well how the end of this parable goes against looking for merit in your spiritual life. BUT something that no one ever mentions is that this parable works ONLY at the spiritual level, not at the practical, commonsensical level, where the principle “the more you work, the less you get” doesn’t make ANY sense at all.
    Because there are many people out there, who, like me, left their nepotistic country looking for a work environment that values merit. And I found it, thank God. Don’t tell me that the gospel is against THAT, please.

    • @tryingnottobeasmartass757

    • @tomlabooks3263
      @tomlabooks3263 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tryingnottobeasmartass757 It obviously isn’t. That’s why it works so well at the spiritual level. But while other parables also work at the common sense / economic level, this one doesn’t. That’s probably why it’s a more complex parable to unpack - which Bishop did brilliantly. That’s my simple point.

  • @EcstaticTemporality
    @EcstaticTemporality 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I think this story reveals two incidences of pride that beleaguer and characterize humanity: pride that you think you’re ready and know-it-all (e.g. some teenagers), and the defensive and lacerating pride that speaks from an ultimately wounded heart wanting what you see as fair justice (i.e older brother in the story). What the two have in common is the idea of “what is fair”. Christ uses this very ubiquitous notion to show us our shortcoming and failings, sure, but also God does not hold the same fairness which leads to pride. Rather, God’s love acceptance of his sons (to superimpose the father of the story with God) isn’t determined by possession, accumulation, or even control. In fact, God does the opposite. He lets go, and gives “inherence” in this story but also forgiveness and pardon to such an extent to throw a party! God’s gives so much he consoles a grieving son who believes he does not share in his father’s glory and love. That is what swells up in the older brother. He is hurt, thinking God does not value him or his labors. God reveals He is not the God of possessions but the God of Life!

    Americans are always complaining about their "rights", failing to realize there are consequences to their actions. Freedom is not "free". We all have responsibilities for our actions. We should be grateful to the Father for giving us this wonderful country. Yes, we are not perfect human beings, but we need to forgive each other and strive to make life better for all. Thank you, Bishop Barron, for a wonderful homily.
