I find it fascinating that you can see where they put all the dead ones. (Bottom right) incase anyone didn’t know ants release a hormone when they die which means other ants know they’re dead and put them in basically an ant graveyard. I saw an experiment where someone put the hormone on an alive ant and it took itself to the graveyard (once the hormone was gone it returned to doing alive ant stuff dw)

That's just where they store their trash to keep a clean nest and get rid of the sand they're taking out. They don't usually 'bury' their dead, just discard them with the rest of the garbage the colony makes away from the nest so it doesn't draw in predators ^^

I wonder if there is someway of tagging ants so you can keep track of the same ants visually during this. Like, do the diggers take a grain of sand and haul it themselves all the way to the dump? Or do they have a conveyor system. The diggers hand off to haulers, maybe a chain of haulers that move it while they mostly stay in a small part of the tunnel as individuals? I'm just curious how they organize around the task. They are ridiculously efficient.

@Brennan Shy ants keep their nests as hygenic as possible by having designated areas to poop and bury the dead, if you watch the right, while digging they move 2 corpses in the pile and they bury them, likely to prevent the decaying body from spreading bacteria and mold

doesn't this show how smart ants are? if you think about it they could've piled the sand into a corner but instead they piled the sand in a certain way such that the pile would reach the entrance of the huge sand thingy so that they wouldn't waste too much energy going to the bottom
