I find that at least with wasps if your calm around them they just get on with what they’re doing and ignore you. I had a nest in my garden and would regularly feed them and help keep them cool.

I thought the yellow hornet queen was going to take the larvae from the paper wasps nest once it abandoned it for extra food for herself and her larvae.
What I find immensely fascinating is the fact nobody taught them this, and they all have different nest building methods! And the way she fed them too... Man its so cool to see!

Our Dolichiovespula maculata queens in the USA also put paper fibers on top of the cocoons for some reason. They disappear though so I guess they are reused for something useful.
It's probably a way to store some material while giving a layer of extra protection to pupae, as long as there aren't workers to protect them. That's my guess anyways.

Would they have survived without intervention? I wonder how many queens don't generally make it, since the video said they can exhaust themselves before the workers hatch. The Paper Wasp must have set up shop elsewhere, after losing two fights and being at the Hornet's mercy both times.

I've never seen someone hand-feed a wasp or hornet before. And they were so calm. Very neat.
