Everyone (including me) thought Sakic was totally mishandling the Duchene situation, but just being patient payed off. I think that's the route for Winnipeg with PLD.

The problem is, by stating that he wants to play for MTL (and pat Brisson confirming it is just icing on the cake), he just tanked his trade value for the Jets. Who would pick him up knowing he wants to sign in MTL in 2 years? The ONLY way to get any value for him is either:
A) to trade him to MTL... which if I'm Kent Hughes... why? if he wants to come here, I'll just wait the two years, not spend any assets for him and let salaries naturally fall off my team to create space during those 2 years.... Why would I spend assets for him now when I have no space on the cap and am not in win now mode?
B) Trade him at the deadline in two years as a rental. You'll get lower value because everyone knows he wont sign if it isn't MTL but you should still get something decent provided his play doesn't tank.
@@starkiller34 , Yeah, but we're looking at the now. What Sakic proved, and what we should realize is that things don't stay static. Changing circumstances change perceptions on a player's value. And while we can't predict what the specific dynamics will cause that, we do know that it will inevitably happen. So, wait it out.
Take a look at the Eastern Conference. Last year, there wasn't much competition for playoff spots. But looking at the off season additions and subtractions, key players on LTIR for a good chunk of the start of the season, and we can see a real dog fight shaping up for at least 3 of the 8 playoff spots, probably 4, assuming that out of the 5 teams that look like they have a "lock", one will stumble out of the gate.
We could be looking at 7 or so Eastern Conference G.M.'s looking to add a key player from Christmas onward to the trade deadline. And that's just the East.
Reacting now will miss the "sell high" market later.
@@starkiller34 Something like Dvorak and Anderson for PLD would be an optimal outcome for Hughes, simply because then he gets two birds with one stone; the Habs get PLD, AND some cap space. Then, if Hughes is a bit of a good negociator, he'll be able to sugarcoat it in a way that this is what the Jets could get, or they could get nothing and the Habs sign him in the off-season in two years. Then, Hughes could well free up the space by sending Dvorak and Anderson away for high-ish picks, or patch up holes in the roster come trade deadline (as long as it is moves that could be benefic at a mid- to long-term agenda). Hughes is clearly in the power spot here, Cheveldayoff apparently wants a player the Habs won't trade (The Athletic seemed to suggest either Caufield, Suzuki or even Slafkovsky) and the longer the Jets remain patient, the less they'll get in return.
That PLD / Laine trade just looks better and better for the CBJ each time it comes up in discussion.

PLD to Montreal only makes sense if the Habs were trying to be a playoff team in 2022-23 but they're not, so why pay any price at all? Dubois will be a UFA in two years and Montreal's rebuild will be much further along by then (and the cap issues might be resolved) so at that point they may get him for "free".
Sooo the Jets should just lose *THE GUY THEY TRADED LAINE FOR* ...for nothing?

Adam Fox forced his way to NY, so did Trouba. Tavares left for home too in FA and the Isles got nothing in return. My point of view on this is that hes telling jets management that he wants to go to FA beforehand so theyre not suprised

John Tavares fired his agent Bryan Deasley BEFORE the draft after Bryan was terminated by Siskinds Sports Management. He represented John as a 17 year old BEFORE the NHL draft.

i think the jets series loss to the blues in 2019 affected them psychologically to no end. they were so high on themselves after the 2018 run that they almost felt invincible the following year. I think covid put a stop to the internal bleeding but I think in 2019 a lot of those guys figured the team had already peaked as guys started to leave. I'll never forget how on edge wheeler was after that series.

That season they were taken by like 75% of fans and experts as “cup favourites” and they underperformed (according to their potential) all season long , Then the finale with St Louis was the cherry on top , I think there were issues in that lockeroom way before the loss in the playoffs

Which is fine because they were a really good team, but to lose in the first round after thinking you were building something hurt their egos. I’m not a big Dubois guy but Adam was kinda under selling him saying he’s a mid tier player. Guy is a good second liner who can fill in on a top line and plays a playoff style of hockey.

I don't think that's quite true, they could trade him on terms akin to a deadline trade, though that obviously lowers the return if the team isn't expecting to be able to keep him. But since Montreal also has no incentive to offer assets actually equal to his value, there really aren't any "good" trades here for Winnipeg, in all likelihood.
The audacity of PLD is ridiculous. I agree with Dangle, WPG should fight back and let him sit if he wants. Every other team should have this kid on their "no-fly" list, he's given up on 2 franchises in like 3 years.

As a jets fan, I am so disappointed and frustrated with the Dubois situation. He is so entitled for a guy that has proven and accomplished nothing. I was so excited to have him and now I am so ready for him to leave. He has been shown so much love here and has totally fucked us
It really makes me sad. Doesn't help how outsiders view the team and city. I just wish they would start to rebuild the team already. It's already over at this point.

Jones would only go to Chicago or Dallas while Dallas basically pulled themselves from it and Columbus still got an absolute haul. I am a Vancouver fan, but I like the Jets, if they got Beddard I would be pretty happy with that. And you can't really blame them for a bad Defense, after Buff retired it was basically like Lidstrom retiring from Detroit. You cannot replace guys like that.

PLD is a top-line center calling him a 2nd or 3rd line player is just disrespectful. He had 1 bad season when he forced his way out of CBJ. 20, 27, 18, 9, and 28 goals with 48, 61, 49,,21, and 60 points. If he's all in giving 100% he's a massive problem for the other team. Don't be surprised if he threatens 70 points if he actually plays.

Sandin doesn't care about contract, he just wants a spot in the lineup and right now he doesn't see one (it's been reported on). He would sign low if muzzin gets traded.

Montreal is not in a position right now to take Dubois on without unloading Suzuki or Caulfield and the Jets rightly do not want Montreal's scraps. The Habs need to stay the course and if he is available in a couple of years then decide
Jets should trade him to arizona or Philly for being ungreatful, maybe it will teach him a lesson, then he can sign with the habs in FA a couple years from now. Like who does he think he is with these demands?

Please go research Stromes doggos, one tragically and quickly passed away earlier this year and that was Wrigley, but they honor him weekly because he was an amazing doggo. Their new doggo is Benny and they were already in the works of getting Benny when Wrigs passed. Truly sad, my heart goes out to them each time they post. ❤️

Pretty sure this isn't a ploy by Du bois to make sure he stays in WPG-just to squeeze a few extra bucks out of them Steve. That doesn't make any sense on so many levels. I do agree they should play hardball with him,& tell him-fine you can sit out & get 2 yrs older or play for us. I wouldn't want him if I was Montreal anyways-especially with such a young team. He's a good player,but not worth the selfishness,or headache. A good 2C-not even on Kadris level,but seems to think he's Mcdavid,Sid,or Mckinnon. Except those guys care bout their team,teamates,& team success.
He pulled this on his Jr team also. What a disastrous locker room WPG will have for everybody else-especially the young players-if Du bois,Wheeler,& Scheflie are all there next yr. No wonder Stasny went off,on his way out the door. I'm sure hiring a 68 yr old defensive minded coach will go over great with these 3 selfish cancers. And WPG seems to think some contender is gonna bring in Wheeler,without them retaining salary? Even if they have the cap room-no contender will put 8 million on their cap,for a declining player with attitude,& effort issues-whos probably about a $4-4.5 million player now.

I'd like PLD here in MTL if the Habs can unload CP, Gally, Hoffman, Drouin and Dvorak. I still want them to be drafting in the top 5 next draft. Also I wouldn't mind at all playing PLD on wing temporarily or permanently if he develops chemistry with Dach and Andy. On paper that would be a beast line. And I'd go with a 7.5 × 7 yrs contract with very favorable NTC structure for the Habs.

Dubois is actively tanking his own trade value, there’s no world in which he’s helping the Jets with any of this. Dubois is an RFA, Gaudreau was an UFA. Big difference.
Jets sneak into the playoffs and beat Colorado in the first round. Helle completely goalies them in game 7. Jets beat the lightning in the finals! Dubois sits the entire playoffs. Mason Appleton wins the con smythe! Calling it🎤
Non leafs fan here. Love you guys and generally think you have your heads on straight, but as an outside perspective there's NO chance the leafs get a return for muzzin. That contract makes him a net negative asset when considering his play and age. And that doesn't even BEGIN to touch on the leafs being capped out and teams not wanting to do them a favor and bail them out. Sorry, but it'll cost to trade Muzzin.

The Return is getting 5.8 million off your books and used on players that don’t get hurt every single last month/playoffs for the last three years…….his best days are behind him and the money can be spent elsewhere. What’s hard to understand about that????

You can go look at the WAR stats. Muzzin and Mcdonaugh are extremely similar. Mcdonaugh has the sig worse contract .

So it was ok when Tavares kept the Islanders thinking he’d resign and in the end they got nothing. At least Dubois is giving notice and Jets have a chance to get assets.
They would get assets if he just requested a trade, but by saying I will go to Habs in 2 years no matter what…. No one will make a value offer for him including Montreal because they can just sit and wait for him. No one else is looking for a 2 year relationship just to see him walk.

The Duchene trade didn't 'rebuild' the Avs. It got them Girard, who was injured for most of the playoffs and Byram. The Avs cup is them drafting well in the top 10, sticking with that core and adding pieces around it until it meshed. There was no 'one trade' that put them over the top.
Getting rid of duchene helped the locker room alot. It let Mackinnon become the Top dog. Girard and Byram are part of the deepest defense in the league. It drastically accelerated their rebuild. Just becuase Girard was injured in the playoffs doesn't negate his value to the club over the last few years

I think the best thing for everyone is for Dubois to just play in Winnipeg for two more years. Habs want to suck now anyway so there's 0 chance they are going to overpay for Dubois.
