Hello JayJr and Megan. Always interesting to see another Mario timeline! Very nice work with the presentation and editing!
While MatPat’s timeline is definitely (and quite obviously) flawed in many ways, there are also a few issues in the timeline here as you’ve presented it thus far.
I’m going to divide my initial criticisms on the basic division of the eras and where the games fall in them here, before going more in-depth on your later points.
    Genesis Era
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (past) is definitely set after Yoshi’s Island DS. Firstly, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Peach and Baby Bowser are all clearly physically older in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (Past) than they were in Yoshi’s Island DS, with Baby Mario and Baby Luigi even being able to walk and talk and wearing their dungarees rather than just diapers.
It’s worth noting that Baby Bowser also clearly knows Baby Mario and Baby Luigi quite well by the time of Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (Past), having interacted with them multiple times and even come up with nicknames for them:
    “Your turn, Super Diaper Bro!”
While in Yoshi’s Island DS, Baby Bowser hasn’t interacted with them enough to remember who they are yet, not even knowing they’re brothers, saying to Baby Mario:
“Hey, you over there in the red hat! I saw a kid in green up there! He was totally stealing your style!”
The Super Mario Bros. Super Show is not canon to the world of the Super Mario games. Not only did Nintendo have practically no involvement with the show’s production, but it has never been acknowledged within the Mario canon since its initial release. It clearly does not represent the world of the Mario games at all, and does not belong in the same timeline.
The Donkey Kong Arcade game is most definitely set before Super Mario Bros. We know that Super Mario Bros. is essentially a direct sequel to Mario Bros., as they were plumbers at the time, who found a pipe in the sewers taking them to the Mushroom Kingdom. In Donkey Kong however, Mario was still a carpenter in the city, fighting Donkey Kong on a construction site, clearly before he arrived in the Mushroom Kingdom.
    Mario vs. Bowser Era
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and Super Mario Bros. 2 are correctly grouped together, but both clearly take place after Super Mario World. Yoshi appears in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, while Yoshi and Mario first met in Super Mario World:
“Hooray! Thank you for rescuing me. My name is Yoshi. On my way to rescue my friends, Bowser trapped me in that egg.”
Super Mario 3D Land is set between Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story and New Super Mario Bros. 2, as we know from the presence of Dry Bowser, the design of Bowser’s Castle and the Super Leaves.
Luigi’s Mansion is definitely set after the events of Super Mario 64. King Boo’s presence in Super Mario 64 DS heavily alludes to the formulation of his revenge plan in the original Luigi’s Mansion. It’s clearly his first chronological interaction with the Mario Bros.:
“I am King Boo, the spookiest of all the spirits! I locked up the wimpy green moustache man. And I'll do the same to you!”
“You can never really kill a ghost! We always come back! See you again.”
Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon is also set a long time after the events of the first game, and is also explicitly set after the events of Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time at least, as Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon is set after Luigi moves out of Mario’s house (he’s still living with Mario during Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time) and during Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon Professor E. Gadd sends Gooigi back in time to the events of the first game, which of course must take place after the invention of his Time Machine.
    Vacation Era
This doesn’t really make sense as an “era”. Why would the characters take multiple vacations in a row? Especially when each vacation has different circumstances surrounding it.
Super Mario World’s vacation is explicitly so the heroes can recuperate from the adventure they’d just had in Super Mario Bros. 3:
“After saving the Mushroom World from Bowser and the rest of the Koopas in Super Mario Bros. 3, Mario and Luigi needed to recuperate from their adventures. Together they agreed that the best place to vacation was a magical place called Dinosaur Land.”
With Super Mario Bros. 3 itself being set not long after Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros.: the Lost Levels.
Super Mario Sunshine itself has a clear timeline of events shown when F.L.U.D.D. scans Mario in the intro, which further shows that Super Mario Sunshine takes place after Super Mario 64, which takes place after Super Mario World, which takes place after Super Mario Bros. 3.
Mario Party 7 was a cruise planned by Toadsworth, and based on his reasoning for planning the cruise it seems incredibly unlikely that they’d just been on two other vacations:
“You see, Mario and his friends are always busy fighting evil and saving the world and so forth, so I offered him a chance to come on a cruise around the world!”
Luigi’s Mansion 3 is, of course, only a vacation because Luigi “won” a trip to a luxury hotel, so even if the reasoning for grouping these games together is “the heroes decided to go on lots of vacations at this time”, that doesn’t work with the story of this game.
    Galaxy Era
Super Mario Maker 2 isn’t exactly canon in the way you may expect.
Firstly, let’s just talk about the first game. It doesn’t feature much in the way of plot, but what we do know is that it’s a level creator where Mario himself builds levels and then somehow also plays through them…
Super Mario Maker is likely an in-universe program for making Mario game stages. The Mario you play as in levels is not the real Mario, but rather a character within the program. What leads us to this conclusion? Mario Paint.
Mario Paint is shown in artwork to also be an in-universe program tool that the real Mario uses to make art and music. This can be seen in the game’s artwork. Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker 2 feature many connections to Mario Paint. The Coursebot, Undodog, Reset Rocket, Sound Frog, Babyface, Mr. Eraser, Cursor Hand, and Gnat Attack Minigame in Super Mario Maker are all originally from Mario Paint, plus many more. On the Title Screens of both Mario Paint and Super Mario Maker, clicking the different letters of the title cause different effects.
The implication is most definitely that this is an in-universe level maker. Mario Paint even features an in-game Mario that moves on the Title Screen and through the music you create, much like the Mario that’s on the title screen and that goes through levels in Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker 2.
Either way, Super Mario Maker 2 would have to be set after New Super Mario Bros. U and Super Mario 3D World, as it features both of these games as themes.
New Super Mario Bros. U is explicitly set after Super Mario 3D World. We know this because of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker’s Special Episode, which is set after the events of the main game (which itself is a direct prequel to Super Mario 3D World, like you mentioned). Toadette discovers the Super Crown during the special episode, which leads directly into New Super Mario Bros. U where she uses it to transform into Peachette.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam is also explicitly set after Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (and therefore after Super Mario 3D World), with Toadette even saying “I've tracked a few treasures in my day, sirs.” to Mario and Luigi during the game.

      Peace Era
The “Peace Era” does not exist. They are not at peace during the Mario Party games. In fact, Bowser is still the main antagonist of every Mario Party game aside from Super Mario Party.
Bowser is also still a villain in the Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, Mario Baseball, Mario Strikers and Mario Sports games. He states in many of them that he’s only taking part so he can beat Mario. He’s even the main antagonist throughout the stories of Mario Super Sluggers, Mario Tennis Aces, etc.
Dialogue from various games proves this:
“Kid! You kept me waiting! I came here to beat Mario!”
      - Bowser, Mario Golf (GBC)
“We started playing Tennis so we could defeat Mario!
But we haven’t even come close to beating him…”
      - Bowser, Mario Tennis (GBC)
“If you don't like how we're acting, then start the matches toot sweet! I’ve been waiting so long, I'm about to blow up on someone!”
      - Bowser, Mario Tennis: Power Tour
“I came to this tourney to crush Mario on the links! What do I care about this loser?”
      - Bowser, Mario Golf: Advance Tour
      “Time to play me!
      But why bother?
      I'Il obviously win!
      Gwah ha ha ha!”
      - Bowser, Mario Superstar Baseball
“Bwa ha ha! This racket has the power
to rule over anyone! It's perfect for
      a king like me!
This power is incredible! It makes me want to control everything even more than usual! It's exhilarating!
Mario! Meet me at the spot where this all started. We'll determine who's the strongest once and for all. With this power, I can't lose! Not even to you!”
      - Bowser, Mario Tennis Aces
“The Bowser Highlands Course was specifically designed for a showdown with Mario. We’d just finished putting in the final tricks and traps…”
      - Buzzy Beetle, Mario Golf: Super Rush
“The Snow King is deep within the mountain. The only way in is through Bowser’s golf course, and, well… Lord Bowser designed his course to defeat Mario, so it’s kinda full of lava and bombs and stuff like that.”
      - Spiny, Mario Golf: Super Rush
“Bowser enlisted his minions to create this course in hopes of defeating Mario with all the traps and hazards.”
      - Koopa Troopa, Mario Golf: Super Rush
Or you could look at the in-game cutscenes of games like Mario Power Tennis, where Bowser is shown attacking Peach’s Stadium with Bob-ombs, similarly to his attacks in other Mario games. The Toads even bring up the latter attack in Mario Tennis: Power Tour:
“The princess's beloved stadium. Bowser trashed it, but now it's back to its former splendor.”
So in reality, it’s pretty clear that the sports, Kart and Party games take place in-between the other adventures. This is even proven with games like Super Mario Sunshine, where F.L.U.D.D.‘s scan of Mario in the game’s intro shows Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64 in-between the other adventures. They shouldn’t all be lumped together at the end, as that contradicts what the games themselves show.
Super Mario Bros. 3 is, again, explicitly set prior to Super Mario World:
“After saving the Mushroom World from Bowser and the rest of the Koopas in Super Mario Bros. 3, Mario and Luigi needed to recuperate from their adventures. Together they agreed that the best place to vacation was a magical place called Dinosaur Land.”

    • @seandwalsh3
      @seandwalsh3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

As well as that, there is an Airship from Super Mario Bros. 3 at the entrance to the Valley of Bowser:
“This is a strange looking sunken ship. Haven't you seen it somewhere before? That's right, in Super Mario Bros. 3, Koopa and his kids used a flying ship to make life tough for Mario. I wouldn't be surprised if Bowser is lurking somewhere nearby.”
      Bowser’s Revenge Era
Super Mario Land likely takes place MUCH earlier. This is one of Daisy’s earliest appearances in the timeline, if not her first time meeting Mario. Daisy appears frequently throughout the other games, so clearly this title goes before all of them. Super Mario Land.
      Wario Era
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins and is also set much earlier on, being a direct sequel to Super Mario Land. The Wario Land games, which show Wario’s arc from villain to anti-hero, take place simultaneously with the older Mario games, with Wario even joining Mario on adventures like Super Mario 64 DS. Many Mario sports games also reference the Wario Land series pretty directly, further proving they can’t take place this late on the timeline.
I’m also wondering where the WarioWare games are.
The Mario vs. Donkey Kong games also take place between the main adventures, but prior to Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario Odyssey. We know this as Pauline is not yet the mayor in these games, and Mini Toads appear on Mario Kart 8’s Ribbon Road.
Now onto the actual evidence points:
      [4:20]
This is where the first major issue arises. As I’ve mentioned above, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time is set after Yoshi’s Island DS.
Time travel isn’t treated as anything groundbreaking by the adult characters because they’re from after the events of Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (present), but they’ve traveled further back in time.
As for Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, neither Baby Bowser nor adult Bowser were even aware Bowser had time travelled at the time. Bowser just thought Baby Bowser was a random Koopa and vice versa, as is clearly indicated from their dialogue. In fact, their obliviousness to the situation is the entire joke surrounding their interactions.
      [4:52]
Again, the Super Mario Bros. Super Show is clearly not canon and nothing from it can be used when discussing the timeline of the games. The Mario Bros. Arcade game and Wrecking Crew are also set in New Donk City, not Brooklyn. Mario and Luigi have never lived in the real world in the games.
Wrecking Crew is also explicitly set before they became heroes and sports stars. From the game’s official description:
“In the days before Mario and Luigi became sports stars in their downtime from saving the princess, they tried their hands as one-man wrecking crews.”
      [5:45]
There’s actually quite a bit of elaboration on how the events of Donkey Kong came to transpire. According to Miyamoto in various interviews, Donkey Kong was Mario’s pet and friend. Apparently, when Mario started hanging out with Pauline more, Donkey Kong got jealous and kidnapped her as a “prank” to get back at Mario.
There also may have been more deep-seated issues between Mario and Donkey Kong, as Donkey Kong Circus seems to show their first meeting, with Donkey Kong being forced to juggle flames and barrels in a circus while Mario laughs at his act from the audience. This is probably before Mario buys Donkey Kong, and so Donkey Kong may have wanted revenge from an early point in their relationship.
It’s also important to know that the Donkey Kong in these older games is not the same Donkey Kong who stars in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong games and all of the Mario Kart, Mario Party, etc. games. The current Donkey Kong is the grandson of the original Donkey Kong, who is now known as Cranky Kong.
      [6:27]
Princess Peach can’t lift Bowser on her own. As she says in that scene, her wish magic is being enhanced by Starlow’s star magic, which allowed them to weaken Bowser considerably before she used her strengthened levitation to send him away from her castle.
Normally, Peach’s wish magic-based levitation is only strong enough to lift herself for a few seconds, or lift small objects like the trophy she won in Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64 for a decent amount of time.
      [6:46]
Miyamoto actually did comment on Mario dumping Pauline in another interview.
“She is his old girlfriend (laughs)''. […] I guess that's where he meets Peach and changes his mind (laughs).'' with Masayuki Kameyama then saying ''And after that, Mario became famous, so Pauline must have been dumped (laughs).''
Mario also stumbled into his first adventure to save Peach while on a plumbing job. It’s not like he went out of his way to save another woman.
      [7:56]
While yes, Birdo was born in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, it’s incorrect to claim that there’s only ever been one Birdo. There are tens of Birdos in the games - heck, there are three Birdos in Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA) alone. There’s just also a main Birdo character who’s friends with Mario, like with Toad or Yoshi.
Once again, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars features Yoshi, which places it after the events of Super Mario World.
      [8:00]
Super Mario Bros. 2 isn’t just a dream. It’s a real adventure Mario went on, and it likely takes place quite a bit later. Subcon is a real place, Wart, Mouser, etc. are real people, not made up by Mario’s subconscious.
In the Japan-only sequel to Super Mario Bros. 2, BS Super Mario USA, the story goes that Mario initially believed Subcon to just have been an elaborate dream and nothing more, but in actuality Subcon is a real Kingdom in the Dream World, an alternate dimension that’s accessed through dreams.
Not too long after, Wart returned to Subcon and the King of Subcon used the Power of the Stars to physically transport Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad back to Subcon to get rid of Wart once again. The concept of the Dream World as a whole is further explored in great depth in Mario Party 5 and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team.
So yeah, Subcon is just as real a place as the Mushroom Kingdom is.
You are correct however in saying that Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and Super Mario Bros. 2 have a chronological connection.
      [8:44]
It’s notable that Dry Bowser appears in the post-game of Super Mario 3D Land, and we know thanks to Bowser Jr.’s Journey that Dry Bowser didn’t exist for the first time until shortly after the events of Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story. This sets Super Mario 3D Land after the events of Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, and likely close to New Super Mario Bros.
As for the Tail Tree, it regrows. It likely spreads its leaves once a year, as we even see it with a fresh batch of leaves at the end of Super Mario 3D Land and in Super Mario Odyssey. It also probably isn’t the only tree of its kind in the world, and since Super Mario Bros. 3 takes place in the Mushroom World - not the Mushroom Kingdom - it’s possible the leaves in that game came from a completely different source. The tree just isn’t good evidence for a timeline placement, especially one this early on where no other games featuring the leaves seem to occur on your timeline.
      [9:55]
I’ve already addressed much of what I have to say about Luigi’s Mansion in relation to Super Mario 64 earlier. Yes, King Boo and Bowser are and always have been allies, however Super Mario 64 definitely occurs first, and King Boo was likely working unbeknownst to Bowser in Luigi’s Mansion, fuelling a personal revenge plan.
      [10:15]
King Boo’s plan in Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon IS actually much bigger. He’s taken control of the minds of all of the ghosts in Evershade Valley and plans to command a ghost army to take over the world. The reason he kidnaps Mario again is to prevent him from stopping his plans and to lure Luigi and take him out of the picture too while getting his ultimate revenge on them for trapping him in a painting in the previous game.
This game is most certainly not a direct sequel to Luigi’s Mansion. They make it very clear in the game that quite some time has passed since the original title, implying that literal years have gone by.
      [10:35]
While Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time is set not long after Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, there are bigger timeskips between them, Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team.
Not only is Fawful visibly older in Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, but in Bowser Jr.’s Journey it’s established that the events of Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser happened quite some time ago, at least before Bowser Jr. can remember, which indicates that games like Super Mario Sunshine occurred between the events of Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time and Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story.
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team is also set quite some time after Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, with Starlow mentioning how it’s been so long since she’s seen the Mushroom Kingdom crew. The Elite Trio have also worked their way back up the ranks of the Koopa Troop from being hated traitors to Bowser’s Royal Guard.
Again, these games should probably be spread out more, with other adventures occurring in-between.
Also, the Poltergust only appears in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and it’s the Poltergust 3000, which is further proof the game is set prior to the events of Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon.
Anyway, nice video and looking forward to future parts!

You mean really JUST the game timeline. The movie is obviously different. He is older than Yoshi and does not fight Cranky Kong but Donkey Kong from the Country series, not the OG one from the Arcade game.
And you are wrong. The cartoon does NOT fit with Yoshi's Island because in Yoshi's Island they are from the Mushroom Kingdom as can be seen in the ending and in the show they are from Brooklyn. The cartoon has its own continuity, just like the movie.
