A lot of people have said that the missile not working was bad writing just to boost up the tension of the moment, but what most people don't recall is that when he first got into the jet, he played around with the launch system and the missile almost went off and he panicked, pressing a bunch of random sht, which turned off the count down. This was what later came back to bite him in the a$s because by doing this, he made the system lock the missile in what is probably a safety measure in place. When he tried to launch the missile the second time, the system short circuited itself causing the clamps to become physically locked which would not allow the system to fire on command.
In short, it wasn't lazy writing, it was actually written in earlier.

Even if it wasn't that... missiles can malfunction. Even Tom Clancy had that happen once or twice in his novels, and in his books the military was damn near perfect (as opposed to people like Richard Marcinko and his stories, where Murphy's Law would kick in all the time and they'd succeed despite the issues rather than not have them at all).

One thing I've always loved about this scene, is the oh so subtle 4th wall break when the shot switches to an internal shot of Randy Quaid's F18 cockpit when he says the line "it's me Russel Case Sir!" and he actually salutes the camera. brilliant movie, still stacks up as a top class sci-fi action movie to this day, there was another little moment that almost broke my heart, after Russel decides to make the ultimate sacrifice, his son, who has called him Russel throughout the entire movie, calls him "Dad" for the first time. just as his dad is about to die, my own father passed away in 2015 and we watched this movie together back in the day and we kind of bonded over it because we both were sci-fi geeks and anytime I see this scene it always makes me think of him. RIP Dad, love you always, see you on the other side.

    1) He was kidnapped to the mother ship before
    2) He drove his jet fighter and stuck it to the openning of the Alien's mother ship cannon is an action of revenge because he was being sexually assulted by the Aliens that they stuck something in his ass when he was kidnapped. Absolutely one of the best parts of the movie……I also like the 4th of July speech from the president. I cheer and shout at the end of the speech to this day.

I've never seen Randy Quaid in anything that made me think of him as one of the great actors-but honestly? This scene should be on a short list of required viewing in every single acting masterclass or workshop. Watch this:
Look at how his performance is framed. His body's strapped in and his hands are on the controls, so he can't physically emote. His entire face and head are covered by the flight gear and the mask, so he can't even use his face.
All he has are his eyes. That's it.
Now think about the reality of shooting this. It's a tight, tight closeup, so for the most part, he's looking directly into the lens of a big 35mm film camera (or the digital equivalent, though i think 1997 was too early for this to be a DV). There's no real movement happening; he's inside a prop cockpit, probably surrounded by green screens so they can put the sky in in post.
He has no actors to bounce off of. This movie did an incredible job of landing a huge, huge cast of A-listers who would probably never have been available for the whole length of a film shoot at the same time. The film does a masterful job of hiding this through good scripting and direction. Bill Pulman is shot in s completely different location, and probably did all his scenes before or after Randy's involvement. And so that close-up on the photo of his family isn't even there for him to react to: that was an incidental shot probably picked up by a second unit director or AD.
So this scene is nothing but an actor staring point blank into a glass lens with nothing but his eyes to work with. And through that you see his jubilation at fighting the aliens he TOLD people his whole life were real, and the relaxed attitude of a crazy man who's been vindicated as not crazy. It transitions into his old military training as soon as the missiles start firing-and where you really see it, where he really recovers his training and discipline, is the moment there's an unknown equipment malfunction. There's all-business triage of the situation, followed by the fear and panic that creeps in as he realizes the trouble, the uncertainty of searching for a solution, then the understanding of what has to be, the weighing of that sacrifice against the private citizen he's become, and the decision that has to be made with courage, selflessness and iron resolve.
The "I'm Baaack!" line strikes me as a corny last line that's right in the tradition of 1990s action-movie catch phrases. It never worked for me. But in about 15 seconds before that line, you see maybe the most virtuosic exercise in emotive acting I've seen from anyone.
I hope people remember this scene and think about just what a skilled actor it takes to pull this off, whether it's a big popcorn movie or not.

A lesser noticed moment: the second that they bring down all the shields with the virus, I always felt like the movie got so incredibly hopeful because the US fighters were getting obliterated, and then all of a sudden there are alien spaceships being shot down by Sidewinders and F-16's. It's an absolutely glorious moment honestly

Actually I kind of surprised people didn’t realize he was going to kamikaze it. I mean he’s a good dad and he loved his children who were IN the base they were about to destroy! He may have saved the world but at that moment he was a father protecting his kids in the only way he had left to him.

The odd thing I always thought about this film was everyone regarding him like a backwater crazy about alien abduction with the evidence of his story flying right above every major city on the planet. You'd think he'd have at least a modicum of credibility given the circumstances.... or that's just me.

Funny thing though..... Because of Randy Quaid being kinda a whack job now days and at the time it was made... The sequel completely discard the fact that his character "Russell Case" existing..... Hell they focus more on the lack of Will Smith, or Jeff goldbloom, hell Liam Hemsworth gets more focus than the man who literally saved the world.
Shit I would have taken a mild call back like that elderly general, have a slow pan to Russell Case picture being held by his Three kids or something. Have his son Miguel be a flight instructor for Liam Hemsworth and get killed. Something more than being completely ignored.
That's like having a batman movie and completely ignoring Alfred pennyworth.
