THE MYSTERY ON THE RIVER MERSEY - MAGGIE'S CAVES

  • Maggies caves alledegy date back to around 1670! Thought to have been dug out by workers from the local corn mill tunnels or by the river wideners, both of whom had the tools and experience to construct these caves... It is understood that people of that era actually lived there for a number of years.
Around 1851, the caves were used as a distillery for purifying gas tar to produce naphtha. Around the time of the construction of the Stockport Viaduct it was apparently home to many of the very poorly paid workers who built the impressive structure.
Also a brothel, distillery and refuge to the homeless whom now seem to occupy the area... It was reported that a family of 4 was sadly living down in 2011.
But the origin and purpose of these mysterious caves are still unknown to this day! Throughout the entirety of the underground lair it is quite clear to see that over each century it has been used as a multipurpose base for many thing's... from the pick marks on the walls of the men who caved the place out over 350 year ago to the graffiti on the walls from the modern day...this place still remains Stockport's biggest mystery !

I lived in Stockport for nearly 10 years when I moved out of tameside.. I never knew about this place. My thoughts are it was used for storage & moving stuff along the river, before that possibly dwellings of some kind. Fascinating! Funny too as the other guy in the video I started watching his content as it was recommended from me watching your content, great content once again!

Afternoon Ant. The hardest part of my afternoon viewing of a Daft Monkey video is deciding which one to watch lol. So today is this one. The caves are certainly a piece of art and the walls contain lots of history. Maybe they were built as containers for cargo for boats travelling along the River Mersey if they ever did of course. The piece of pottery you found looked like a shard of a jam pot that I've seen Mudlarkers find on dumps and foreshores from the era before. Your filming and editing is wonderful. Keep filming Ant coz I'm loving your videos. Have you seen the crank caves near Liverpool?

    • @daftmonkey7296
      @daftmonkey7296  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you Gaynor! Yeah there’s plenty of pottery around for mudlarkers that’s for sure. They could have quite possibly been for cargo. It would make sense with it being right on the river too. No, I’ve never been to crank caves but it’s on the list. Thanks once again Gaynor 🐒🌟

Perhaps at one time a through way for villagers , farmers, peasants in the area to carry their goods to a raft on the mersey. Instead of climbing hill and dale with your goods on your back to get to the fair??? Poor man's road type thing? ( short cut) .
The different tunnels may have even been used for different products during fair/ seller market time...like the ladies with kidney pies pasties and preserves wouldn't want to be shuffled by the farmers livestock making their way down to a raft or having to wait on one. There'll be no pig poop on "Old Nannie Annie'sFamous Cottage Pasties& Pies" !!! and Mother Murtle better tell young Jack to put those market geese in a basket next time or we'll be cooking our Christmas goose well before the end of harvest!!! Exciting crowded chaos making your way along the tunnels, pushing being jostled, waiting your turn with your wears on your back. Being first to jump on the returning raft and be on your way to fair stalls and festivities
.....??? To me this is more exciting than boring old hat sacrifices... Chaos Living the dream 16th century style!🤩🇨🇦❤

Great video lad u have a great thirst for knowledge and a great respect of the past. Im a fan.... Thanks for the shout out. There are more possible caves on that side heading towards the green bridge tho i havent had the time to explore. Personally i think originally it was a natuaral cave widened for the purpose of securing livestock b4 transfer to market. Hemp rope manufacture was big in the region during late Elizabethan era for the british navy and its colonial expansion, it was possible it was used to make rope and into other things.Good rope, bad dope(sadly stockport still has this reputation ) 🤣. The long cave n shaft look like rope manufacturing. Long room to twist fibers, shaft to coil maybe. U never make a fire in a sandstone cave, dries it n risks collapse. Also explosive due to copper ore. Top man

      Ps
The pub above the caves(mow flats) was the Bow Garret.
      Garret means watchtower
      Bow is self evident.
Could the caves have an older purpose as a lookout ont the river against shallow bottomed boats? As the vikings could n would carry their boats, did these caves provide defense n view??
Not saying they that old but tradation has a way of lingering on in the local culture.

Plus sandstone is very temperemantal around fire. Hence why firebrick have been used in kilns and furnaces for centuries circa 1650

@@johnfreney3819 Sandstone is non-combustible and thus resistant to fire, making it a preferred option for building and construction. Due to its natural density, fire takes longer to burn through sandstone blocks, meaning any homes experiencing a fire will have added time.
