THE STORY OF IRWELL HOUSE - A SALFORD DOCUMENTARY

  • A recent conversation with my dad had me intrigued.... He told me of a mansion house that once stood proudly in Drinkwater Park. The history of the building is somewhat vague. In some respects theres a lot of information...but then there are huge gaps...years of obscurity..missing time. Owned by the Drinkwater family, it then fell into the hands of Salford & Prestwich council who turned the beautiful Georgian building into a Smallpox hospital! This was to deal with the national pandemic of Smallpox...But this was just the tip of the iceberg!
What I uncovered, researched & found is nothing more than fascinating! I honestly can't wait to share this video with you all!
Before I go I just want to thank you all for the support you all show me....without you guys taking an interest in what I do, it honestly wouldn't be worth the while!

We live in Besses and have walked around Drinkwater Park a few times. We discovered the ruins of Irwell House during lockdown on one of our ‘exercise walks’. It wasn’t easy to find but worth the effort. How sad that this is all that’s left of it. It must have been such a grand house in its time.

Breath taking mate. Remember your Grandad telling me about this place. Such amazing history right on our door step. I've seen the remains of the house many times but not the boiler. Never knew that was there. BRILLIANT once again 👏👏👏

Chris Lees thanks a lot Chris. I’ll try and get my grandad to watch the vid I’m
Sure he would enjoy it. It’s a massive place mate the boiler room is pretty much facing the entrance through some dense woods. Full of history around there. I could have gone even deeper with the vid and involved the history of the land before it was Irwell house but I decided on keeping it just from
When the house was built. The area dates back to around 1380’s over 640 years old. Absolutely ancient around there mate. Cheers for watching. Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏼

Back in the late 1970s Drinkwater park was famous for bottle hunters as it was an old dump. It was the bottle hunters digging holes unearthed the old cellers of Irwell house, the celler had a bricked arched roof. We use to play in them as kids, I can remember it had a long corridor with storage shelves either side. I also remember that there was two large air raid shelters for the workers near waterdale all of them were covered over by the council. It wouldn't surprise me if they are still there.

Researching family tree I came across the 1891 census where an ancestor, Samuel chatwood was actually down as living at Irwell house, drink water park. Samuel chatwood was an engineer who was well know for making locks got vaults band banks. There were a few other farms and cottages listed in drink water park too. Very fascinating and a shame it’s no longer actually standing. Fab video x

As a kid the hospital was still half standing , the cellars / catacombs were a great adventure for most kids off Carr Clough & beyond, me & my brother with friends , knocked a lot of it down , with a 56lbs weight on a chain which we carried around in a pram , the remainder we blew up with home made explosives in the 1970's , to the right of that wall (constructed by Bury council) in the 1980's/90's was their market garden fully walled & with green houses , As for the Irwell & fresh air , at the time it burned down (1956) the Irwell was the most polluted river in Europe if not the world, so not a great deal of fresh air to be had , if you walk in a straight line from it towards Forrest bank , you will find the old sewage tipplers in the field , which were like wooden troughs with a brick chamber underneath , they are next to a bomb crater which we used to dig shrapnel out of as kids

@@daftmonkey7296 Yes the cellars must still be under there all brick arched , problem was sad to say ,we never looked on it as history if it was stood there towering over us , we just had to bring it down ,sad but true im afraid ,some of the huge houses we also played in , alas all now gone

If you give me an email address i can show you a picture of it as i remember as a kid , the house was deliberately burned down in 1958 as part of a Civil Defense exercise , i remember my mam saying she saw it burning down from Woodward road on Carr Clough while walking back from the shops at Rainsough with my elder brother in his trolly

If been watching some of yourvids now I seen the black duggie one. Brilliant mate your a good history teacher. Have u done anything on the history of kersal lanny? I'm sure you av seen the old ruins of buildings up the top. There's some fancy stone work and carved pillors if you look closely spread over a wide area. So some of them buildings must of been important. .. If not, WHY?

Interesting as I expected! Seeing that there are only small remnants of this building left, don’t you just wish you could speak with them! Where I live in the Essex town I live we have the original gateway to the abbey, that’s obviously gone thanks to Henry VIII, but the gateway dates to the C14th. I look at windows of buildings as the eyes and the door as the mouth! If only!!
