I had just gotten an inheritance U47 Fet Vintage D12e Vintage D112 D12VR 3X 421 2X 441 2X Tlm 102 2X Royer 121 C451eb Vintage I also bought an SM7b at the time, but not for drums.. Though now that I've culled the majority of my mics (There was many others I didn't list) I am using the SM7b as a HH mic.
Id like to get a pair of 81s for OH I have a pair of 414 b-uls now (used to use the Royers and 102s(great mics for a lot of stuff kinda wish I hadn't sold them) I still have 2 421's but went and got 6 EV N/D468s for a killer price, I haven't used all 6 yet, but want to do top bottom snare with them on my next large drum tracking gig.. I have 32 IO so Im all about uses as many tracks as possible when tracking drums for options.. (I know a lot of people are against that, but my day job is in post audio mixing for TV.. and we want as much and as many source takes as possible to use as options.)
@@drdelewded Add to that list the best carbon mic you can get for effectively replacing a reversed-wired speaker cone with far better gain, and a Vanguard V44S stereo. You can use this as a Blumlein pair with both capsules as figure 8, or run it through the included splitter box to get it to send a mid side signals! It sounds so good some top engineers sold one of their Neumanns after getting it. Best to widen the stereo image as overhead or as a room mic. Cheers! (also I hate you ;)

@@HR2635 Interesting, I bought the Behringer clone when I was short on cash, and I thought it sounded quite good. Then my friend let me borrow his real Beta 91A, and it was like a night and day difference, with the Shure on top. Of course that's just in my case, that's very nice that the cheaper mic won out in your situation.
Started out with the low grade Audix drum mics (ADX-90, f15, f10, f12, etc..) back in 07/08. Upgraded to CX212, Micro-D, D6, i5. Past couple years I've really broadened that inventory. D2, D4, another D6. ADX-51, OM2, OM3, OM5, OM7 (for singer's vocals). Got a few different MXL condensers/ribbons. Beta 91A with a Kelly SHU Flatz internal bass drum mount system (highly recommend you look into that). Hyper cardioid mics are great in closed environments with more than 1 person playing. Gotta love that off-axis rejection. Sweet vid, per usual.
As I like the studio tours, really appreciated this video. Liked how you showed recording the drums and the process of mixing. I started with Shure Beta-52 and SM57.
My current mic setup is overkill but I am trying to figure out what I like and I just built the room. lol KickIn - Beta91a and AKG D112 KickOut - Miktek P11 and AKGP220 SNTop - Beta57 SNBtm - SM57 Rack and Floor Miktek P10's OH - Lewitt 640TS's Hat - Audix F115 Crotch mic - AKG P220. Sometimes I will throw a couple condensers up for rooms. I don't use all the mics (generally stick to 2 kick mics) but I have choices when I listen back. I mean I've been playing for 15 years, I literally just got a studio to put my drums in moving them this week to start working remotely, and this video pop-up. Think I'm on the right track :D Also got a beta 87A so I guess the 91A will be next! My old man, who have 40 years of experience, recommends carbon-capsule microphones for bass drums to get that sub-low "oumph" cuz it cuts all the transient! He said that he tried the reverse speaker wiring trick back in the days but wasn't satisfied with the gain. You can get modern bullet carbon mics for harmonica or get an old one on Reverb. He had a Geloso one that was good he said.
The 91 has been my preferred “slap” mic on kicks for a while - usually with a sub-kick or the Warm Audio FET 47 clone on the outside if the drum has a reso head. It’s also super cool as a low/floor room mic, which can be really interesting in the mix depending on your room.

My first set of mics was a super cheap CAD drum mic set, like $150 for the whole thing. They’re not necessarily great, but surprisingly still have use today if I want something totally different. The kick mic in particular sounds awesome on the floor tom if I just want that super low thump. Now I have a mixed bag of AKG and Shure mics. My overheads are a stereo pair of AKG c214s, and it’s wild to think how expensive just those two are in comparison to my original drum mics.
i like sticking the beta 91 inside the kick drum, some times it's nearer to the beater, sometimes just sitting in the middle. fantastic sound regardless.
I use de SM7 for HH, its a killer... but i have the Audix D6 for Kicks, and D2 and D4 for toms. KSM 137 for OH, SM57 for snare top and bottom, and a Lewitt DTP 640 for outside kick. And suggestions are more than welcome...
I’ve been playing around with blumlien ribbon overheads and a single omni on the batter side of the kick drum equidistant between the snare resonate head and kick batter head. Gets a ton of kick drum depth

I do use some Shure mics on drums, but only for snare bottom and room mics, I use SM 57s, I use an Audix D6 and Warm Audio 47jr for kick, and depending on toms, either Audix D2's/D4's or ADX51s, and then sE Electronics VR1 ribbons for overheads. Great man! I bought a used shure mic kit with 52 and 57s to start. I’ve recently upgraded to the earthworks dk7 but I still use the 52 on kick! I got the behringer clone of the Shure 91 and it sounds pretty killer! Great video!
OHs Beta 27s in a glens John’s style. Kick Beta52 in with Solomon LoFReQ. Snare currently SM57. SM7b HH. And don’t get me started on ways to mic Tom’s and the room, space is the limit

The problem with kids today is that they’re not growing up at all. He’s convinced in the wise age of what 25, that he has it all figured out, and now he’s sharing it with the rest of us who also don’t have it figured out. And, as of this video 150K look to him for advice. This is when suddenly you come to the conclusion that maybe it WAS possible that 81million people DID vote for Biden last election. Which means 81,000,001 will vote for Harris this year. But, I digress…. When you hit 35-40, you’ll realize you still don’t have a clue about anything. That’s when you’ll take this TH-cam channel down, realizing that it’s not natural (or healthy) to broadcast one’s “growing pains” to the world. ESPECIALLY, when you’re 100% convinced you’ve got it all figured out now.
I have a 52 and a 91 in my kick, 56A on snare, Beta 98s on toms. OHs vary - I like Beta 27s or KSM137s, but sometimes for a more vintage sound a pair of SE R1 ribbons sound great. Never tried an SM7, at >4x the price of an SM57 I've often wondered if it's worth it?
The original drum tracks are so ridiculously good especially with the percussion. I totally butchered the performance but it was a lot of fun of course! haha
Dang we really started at the same time (around 2008) Throughout my journey I learned that the nuance of factors (a mic’s frequency response, placement within a room,etc.) can influence the amount of work you put into making the sound you hear in your head a reality during the mixing process. I’ll eventually get my hands on a sm7b or the new sure sm4
I started out with nothing but a bag full of Behringer C-1 mics. They were $55 each and were unbelievable as drum mics for the price. BIG sounding and open live sound on every recording. But my engineer HATED them. He wanted more 1970s style separation, and begged me to go with dynamic directionals. So heres what I got. Kick... Beta 52 Snare.. AUDIX i5 Hats.. SM57 Toms.. Peavey 328 Floor tom.. Peavey 321 Overheads.. Heil pr31bw Thats 8 mics... and all the room I have on my interface. Honestly, I see no real need to upgrade my setup. Im getting so many compliments now on my tone, tuning, mics and room sound. I think it sounds great, but I do miss the open room sound. When I get more channels, I'm going to grab an SE -VR1 Passive ribbon for room, and another Heil pr31bw for snare top, and move my i5 to bottom side.
I looked at mikes for drums years ago and I think Sure at 2 levels with complete kits. I waited till I could afford the bass drum mike and then used sm58s for a while until I could afford sm57.
Unfair assessment. That Apollo interface ur using has amazing preamps, and I’d very expensive. Most drummers aren’t running that nice of an interface. Agreed?
after ~25 years of experimenting with super expensive mics like 87s, 67s, Coles, etc, as well as Audix kits, Shure Kits ,Oktavia, MXL, and everything in between, my favorite drums mics are: Kick: EV RE-20 or Shure SM52 Snare: Beyerdynamic M201 Toms: CAD M179 - best tom mic and great on some voices and acoustic instruments - an all around workhorse mic. OHs: Neumann TLM 102 All relatively affordable, all produce pro results. My mixes come together quickly, I get a full drum sounds without weird mic dependent EQ; the tracks take compression and EQ well, and it's easy to blend in samples if I need to due to less than ideal kits being recorded. Covers a lot of ground for rock, pop, country, Americana, alt-country.
I have a behringer version of the beta 91a and it's awesome!!! For $60 it's a great mic. Uses phantom power. Sleeper mic for kicks. Also akg c214 great room or mono overhead.

Great sounding kit! What sizes are those Slingerlands? 22, 13, 16? Champagne Sparkle? If so, I have the same set up (1965) with the matching 5x14 snare! Amazing drums and I will never part with them. The bearing edges on my kit are just a fat round over with thick, maple reinforcement hoops. Huge, warm sound.
I see your drum mics/inputs are bussed to a drum bus, which is then bussed to your output bus. inline you've got a neve, and api, aireq...etc etc etc....what are you settings on all those plugins? You VERY briefly touch on this, and I don't argue these mics are great as I've used a lot of them in my own career. But it would be helpful to know what/how much work you've done to colour the audio from input to output.

I also use SM81's as OH's. On snare I use an SM57/Samson CO2 combo, on bass drum I used to use an AKG D112 but now use a Sennheiser e-602ii. On rack toms I use SM57's and on floor tom I use the D112 and it sounds amazing on there. Your snare sounds really good.
You get a thwack sound on your snare I’m hearing a lot these days on you tube kits! I get the snare drums are all good but almost sounds tuned very low with no sustain? Also loose snares to? Is it video compression I’m hearing? It does sound like your kick and toms all have the thwack with no sustain? Does that make sense?

The D112 has a different sound. It's got much more midrange punch. That's the mic that I started with.

Presonus makes a mic called the PD70 it’s very close to an SM7B. Equally well built and $129 new
I bought a pd-70 last xmas and have been very satisfied.
The SM7b is so good on a lot of things...not for everyone or everything but works very well on loud midrange sources

Beta 91 is my favorite live kick sound for anything where you want booty.

Sounding really good, the SM91 is going to give you a lot of detail but watch out for snare bleed, it's going to be more pronounced

You should try golden age project ribbons for overheads. Super cheap, rolls off the highest frequency’s

When you say 'SM7' are you referring to the SM7 or SM7b because you've linked the 7b but that might just be because you can't get the SM7 new anymore?

I don't use a cloudlifter when the SM7 is on drums. I will use it if I am recording something a lot quieter, like acoustic or vocals.

use a combination of a 57 and a 58 on my snare, both on top. been saving up cash to pickup some more. Want the Sm7 so bad. looking forward to that kick drum shootout!

I have a 52 and a 91 in my kick, 56A on snare, Beta 98s on toms. OHs vary - I like Beta 27s or KSM137s, but sometimes for a more vintage sound a pair of SE R1 ribbons sound great. Never tried an SM7, at >4x the price of an SM57 I've often wondered if it's worth it?

The original drum tracks are so ridiculously good especially with the percussion. I totally butchered the performance but it was a lot of fun of course! haha

Throughout my journey I learned that the nuance of factors (a mic’s frequency response, placement within a room,etc.) can influence the amount of work you put into making the sound you hear in your head a reality during the mixing process.
I’ll eventually get my hands on a sm7b or the new sure sm4

I started out with nothing but a bag full of Behringer C-1 mics. They were $55 each and were unbelievable as drum mics for the price. BIG sounding and open live sound on every recording. But my engineer HATED them. He wanted more 1970s style separation, and begged me to go with dynamic directionals.
So heres what I got.
Kick... Beta 52
Snare.. AUDIX i5
Hats.. SM57
Toms.. Peavey 328
Floor tom.. Peavey 321
Overheads.. Heil pr31bw
Thats 8 mics... and all the room I have on my interface.
Honestly, I see no real need to upgrade my setup. Im getting so many compliments now on my tone, tuning, mics and room sound. I think it sounds great, but I do miss the open room sound.
When I get more channels, I'm going to grab an SE -VR1 Passive ribbon for room, and another Heil pr31bw for snare top, and move my i5 to bottom side.

I looked at mikes for drums years ago and I think Sure at 2 levels with complete kits. I waited till I could afford
the bass drum mike and then used sm58s for a while until I could afford sm57.
Unfair assessment.
That Apollo interface ur using has amazing preamps, and I’d very expensive. Most drummers aren’t running that nice of an interface.

SM81 is surprisingly good. Used one when the KM84 went bust and actually preferred the sound. Was shocked.
That snare is absolutely killer! Is it just a Ludwig Brass Supraphonic?
after ~25 years of experimenting with super expensive mics like 87s, 67s, Coles, etc, as well as Audix kits, Shure Kits ,Oktavia, MXL, and everything in between, my favorite drums mics are:
Kick: EV RE-20 or Shure SM52
Snare: Beyerdynamic M201
Toms: CAD M179 - best tom mic and great on some voices and acoustic instruments - an all around workhorse mic.
OHs: Neumann TLM 102
All relatively affordable, all produce pro results. My mixes come together quickly, I get a full drum sounds without weird mic dependent EQ; the tracks take compression and EQ well, and it's easy to blend in samples if I need to due to less than ideal kits being recorded.
Covers a lot of ground for rock, pop, country, Americana, alt-country.
I have a behringer version of the beta 91a and it's awesome!!! For $60 it's a great mic. Uses phantom power. Sleeper mic for kicks. Also akg c214 great room or mono overhead.

Great sounding kit! What sizes are those Slingerlands? 22, 13, 16? Champagne Sparkle? If so, I have the same set up (1965) with the matching 5x14 snare! Amazing drums and I will never part with them. The bearing edges on my kit are just a fat round over with thick, maple reinforcement hoops. Huge, warm sound.
I see your drum mics/inputs are bussed to a drum bus, which is then bussed to your output bus. inline you've got a neve, and api, aireq...etc etc etc....what are you settings on all those plugins? You VERY briefly touch on this, and I don't argue these mics are great as I've used a lot of them in my own career. But it would be helpful to know what/how much work you've done to colour the audio from input to output.
Good player + good kit + good mic’s + good preamps and you have a winner

I also use SM81's as OH's. On snare I use an SM57/Samson CO2 combo, on bass drum I used to use an AKG D112 but now use a Sennheiser e-602ii. On rack toms I use SM57's and on floor tom I use the D112 and it sounds amazing on there. Your snare sounds really good.
I personally prefer the AKG D112 on kick. Any chance we can get the drum stems Andrew? Would love to mix it and use it for a cover

You get a thwack sound on your snare I’m hearing a lot these days on you tube kits! I get the snare drums are all good but almost sounds tuned very low with no sustain? Also loose snares to? Is it video compression I’m hearing? It does sound like your kick and toms all have the thwack with no sustain? Does that make sense?
