    16:19 Great lesson and I agree! You have many successful repair videos of consumer devices with a variety of issues, but the critical application of the key concepts are what I believe you're trying to emphasise. That's what I believe separates the "technician" from the simplified "top-level component swapper."

    This is good to know. I have an universal charger that allows a setting from 15 v to 24 v, and I have been very worried about accidentally over volting laptops I check because I didn't set the output first. It's nice to know I won't fry a motherboard because I checked the laptop with a different voltage than specified.

    Sorin, thank you so much for the detailed explanation. Do you think it's safe to connect 2x 12v car batteries or 12v adapters/power supplies in series 24v and power a laptop regularly? :)

    • @ChildMinded
      @ChildMinded 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it would not be good for your computer..
      BTW you can connect use only one battery and a power booster

  • @Hazmoment
    @Hazmoment 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice Video Sorin. I guess using the higher current charger may just mean if there is a failire internally in the laptop that it would be more catastrophic and easier to find!

    • @em0_tion
      @em0_tion 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably not, because the adapter's over-current protection will kick in and it will shut itself off, but i love the way you're thinking! 😆🔥

    Great help thank you sir ( sorry I don't know your name) , but you have a very good way to simplify things and explain complicated processes
    I am looking to get my first power supply , and I looked at the one you recommended from CSI Linear one but it is over my budget for now , and I am not sure I need a 50/60 Vault one , they have a cheaper one which is Linear 30vaults /5Amp or 10Amps version , plus for the same price they have the switch mode type,
    But I remember you vaguely saying Linear is better then switch mode type !!!
    I am hoping you could make a video or point me to one you have done already in which you explain your preference and reasons behind why Linear over Switch mode , I realise your very busy and may not have time to answer me personally , but a video would be very helpful for all us novices just starting out , many thanks 🙏

    Could you, or have you done a video for a dc to dc boost converter to charge a laptop from a 12v deep-cycle battery instead of using a 120v plug in charger? I was hoping to do something like that in my camper van instead of using the battery to power an inverter (up to 120v) and then use the charger to turn it back down to around 18.5 volt dc, 3.5A, which seems very inefficient.... Thank you for all the videos you do!!

    Hi Sorin thanks for another great video. I don't own a Linear dc power supply yet so i couldn't test. But i would like to know when you try to find bad component, do you lower the voltage to get higher amps, or you can make it at 19v and making the amps higher??

    On new models this is not working. I did try this with my laptop a toshiba P70-B. If I input more than 19v will not charge and will not have the power in led on with battery out. Also when is on with the battery in will take 6.32A without anything attached to usb. The label on the laptop says 6.32A. If I attach a phone or anything on usb or run the cd will still take 6.32A. So newer laptops are build different. Also if I input less than 6.32A will say plugged in not charging but when I have 6.32A on input will charge fine

    • @em0_tion
      @em0_tion 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're confusing labels with actual live values. Yes, your laptop is very power hungry and it wants a high quality charger that is actually capable of providing the power stated on its label (the charger), but that doesn't mean that the laptop is in fact constantly using 6.32A. If you want to check that for yourself, you can buy a household energy meter (watt meter) and plug the laptop power adapter in it. Then you'll be able to at least see live data of your adapter's consumption and you'll sure notice everchanging values. If you want to monitor only the laptop's consumption at constant +19V DC, you'll need to modify your original adapter or use a lab power supply like the one in Sorin's video demonstration ;)

    using higher amp charger will it make my battery life shorter?

    • @em0_tion
      @em0_tion 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. The battery isn't connected directly to the charger. The motherboard has battery charging electronics and the battery itself has an electronics board inside to protect the cells. Biggest enemy of laptop battery life is heat. If you change the thermal paste of your laptop regularly (like once every year, before summer), every part of it, including the battery, will last you longer ;)

    You stick a probe in the VGA and one in the USB port and the laptop starts charging? What the hell is it that I don’t know here?

    • @em0_tion
      @em0_tion 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He's connecting the ground ("negative") wire from his power supply to a random grounding point on his laptop (VGA metal shield, USB metal shield,...) and then the "positive" wire of his power supply to the central (positive) pin of his power jack. It's just easier to provide power from his bench supply this way. Otherwise he'll have to reach with both power supply leads inside the jack to touch the contacts - it's just physically more inconvenient and he risks easily shorting them.
