    14:46 My bet is that the MOSFET could have a floating gate (bad connection, dry joint, maybe some broken path on the PCB) and when it caught some static charge from its surroundings, it latched up. Then, when you started connecting the power supply, you discharged it, so it opened again.
    I once had a similar issue with a LED diode. I bought a couple hundreds of LEDs in bulk from China, and when I tested them, some of them were not glowing. But, since they seemed to be broken anyway, I tried to do some evil experiments on them and see how much voltage they can bear, so I increased the voltage to 5 V, and when I touched the LED for a split second, it lighted up. So I lowered the voltage back to normal, and tried that same LED again, and it is now working fine :P Looks like it needed some "waking up" :q
    Speaking of magic, though: the weirdest thing that once happened to me was when I accidentally unplugged the ground from a working circuit instead of some other signal input, and to my surprise, it was still working fine! :q As if it didn't care about the ground being connected to the powering pin anyway :P I couldn't believe what I see, and tried to find some explanation. The one I come up with was that other connections in the circuit were still working relative to that same ground, so as long as all the voltages and charges on the pins stayed the same, it was like if there were a "virtual ground" in there, or as if the circuit could "deduce" what voltage it is working relative to. And as long as we don't need that much of a charge to open/close a MOSFET, it could work without the current to/from the ground. But I have no idea how can I prove this theory.

    mosfet switching ic dont work properly because of pulsation in 19v line. My gues bad output capacitors in power suply. Always check p.s. with osciloscope.

    I BEEN WORKING ON MY ALIENWARE 17 MOTHERBOARD LA-9331P WHICH IS COMPLETELY DEAD AND WHEN I PLUG MY ADAPTER I GET MY 19V ON MY 4 MOSFETS AND WHEN I GO TO CHECK THE BATTERY, IS CHARGING AT 19V BUT NO LED IS ON AND ALSO DOES NOT TURN ON, THEN I WENT TO CHECK MY POWER BUTTON AND I GET THE 3V BUT WHEN I PRESS IT DOES NOT TURN ON. ANY ADVISE FOR ME PLEASE.

    In this sort of situation would it be possible to measure the voltage on the mosfets gate to see if it is being switched on by the control chip or not?
    I was wondering if something has happened which caused the power control chip to cut the power to protect the circuit but then for some reason the control chip did not reset so the mosfet is turned off all the time, when you forced the power through this then resulted in the power control chip enabling power again???

    • @electronicsrepairschool
      @electronicsrepairschool  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      you can , but its a little bit more complicated as the mosfet can be channel n or p and you must find out what it is first :)

    The laptop turned on after injecting 19v directly into the current sensor before shorting the mosfet that's different from another repair where you shorted the mosfet first, magic volts this time :)

    most sony vaio's fail from mainboard or graphics chip faults. waste your time repairing it to fail again. these laptops fail quickly when pushed to their processing limit.

      oh yes they are. Mine broke after 2 years, just found this broken solder, idk if it was broken before, but touched it and just broke off. Sony did not seem to care about how long these things can last. Doubtful about it working even after i resolder the piece in(called PD42, responsible for power to system)(if anyone can find a new pd42 for model vpcs111fm, that would be help:)

Hell im typing on an acer aspire one from 2008 and guess what it still works. this stupid vaio cant even turn on. And also the cable that goes to the screen, thats ruptured real bad. I will accept any help for whats wrong with it. tried bios reset, battery removal, gonna try to solder broken PD42. plz help :)

    Now i believe in magic LOL. Quick question.. or maybe you can make a short video about it. What do you think about ESD safe tools like nitrile gloves, esd safe tweezers, esd mats, handwrist etc... is it really that important or just a waste of money for laptop, mobile repairs and such. would really like to know your point of view since you don't use any of it...

      Electronics repair school Hey you reference the "startup chip" what ic do you mean? Not bios correct? It looks like southbridge chip? If so how do you know what pin to check for voltage and what rail would it use the 3.3v or 19v? Love your vids keep it up!

    If you look at @14:04, which is just after you had applied power from your bench supply to the current sense resistor, there's a mark on the resistor that looks like a burn mark - it's possible that your power supply blew a fault away very quickly, which enabled the laptop to function properly again...
