I learned so much from this video, and it appears you did too Sorin. That is the beauty of a good teacher, not only do your students learn, but so do you.
I'd like to see you do this same lesson on a PC motherboard, as that's my thing. Great video, one for the bookmarks.

I like watching you videos. I also repair laptops mostly gaming like ROG, Alienware ect. Just fixed a Qosmio Z70-b which had a short on the GPU voltage rail. Simple fix'd by removing the inductor on that rail and forcing the laptop to use the intel 4600 built into the CPU. Well done on some of your great bypass video. Always good to see someone who can also do it without the schematics.

Basically it's the same for "all" modern laptops (Acer, Asus, Toshiba, HP...) other than MacBooks. You have 19 V main rail and then power management chip is managing all smaller supplies and protecting them from shorts with smaller variations (basically shouldn't let you start the machine if there's a short on any rails). Macs are different with a few versions of motherboard layouts so you have to look into them separatedly.

It's different on a desktop computer, the power supplies are controlled by the ATX power supply, which turns them on when you short the PS_ON pin on the connector (this is what the power button on a desktop does).

I have a Samsung np300e5a laptop and one day it just died when on. It has voltage on the BIOS chip, the green charging light is on, the blue starting light goes on when I switch on the laptop it stays on for some time and the laptop turns off. The processor ventilator doesn't go on, neither does the display. Any idea what the issue is? I'm thinking there might be a problem with the BIOS chip that probably needs re-installing.
    Thanks in advance!

    31:40
    shorted 3,3v bios chip
so to diagnose short you would find 3,3v power rail and put 3,3 from the power supply.
in this example would bios chip get hot?
and how you would identify bios chip is faulty and its needs to be replaced?

    • @electronicsrepairschool
      @electronicsrepairschool  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

never found a faulty bios chip :)

    • @bonbonpony
      @bonbonpony 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

A logic probe or some good oscilloscope would probably show that, if you know what signals should be there, and if you can afford such tools (I can't). The BIOS chip is pretty much just an EEPROM with serial interface, like SPI or something alike, so it should send some zeros and ones through the data lines to the "power up chip" (which is actually a general-purpose I/O port, with a serial-to-parallel interface) when it's working properly. But I don't know how to check it with primitive tools.
As for shorting the BIOS in the video, it was shorted _around_ the BIOS, so it's like it was never connected in the first place, because the current would be through the jumper wire instead of through the ROM chip. So if anything would get hot, it's the jumper wire. Unless you were talking about the actual situation in which the BIOS chip got shorted somewhere inside? That would be quite rare, because the BIOS is not really driving much current in a normal situation, so it cannot get too hot etc. And if it were damaged by some static, it would rather be insulating than shorting. More likely, the power rails can get short, through some capacitor or resistor or some other part that's under constant load during the normal operation.

Really enjoyed this video, Sorin. Great idea to take a good laptop and use it to simulate issues and then fix them. Did you solve the electrical issue with your GoPro? You have a lot of patience! Guessing since your multimeter and the GoPro are both connected to the computer for vid-capture, when there's a spark, like you said, it freezes. It must be very well-built to withstand so many shocks internally. Anyways, I'll find out in your later videos if you solved it. : )

I have watched at least 20 hours of your videos Sorin but I think this was the best I have seen so far, I hope that you will use this format at least once a week, since it was much easier for me to follow. Also and the same time and since this is a planned event instead of your usual work load you could get a basic schismatic of the areas you will cover. I hope you will not be offended and I offer only as constructive criticism, your hand drawn sketches are very difficult to see especially drawn on paper with a ball point pen. Another problem for me, sometimes there must be an open door the the foot traffic outside of the store giving a lot of background noise. I almost want to run out and buy an old Samsung like the one you use here, as then I could even learn a hell of a lot more referring to your video. Thanks again for all of the effort you take to share your knowledge and experience with us.

    Great video once again.
Quick question that got me curious: by testing for shorts by adding current to the circuit (to understand which component is getting hot), does voltage matters?
Because if i had 19V with 5Amps, when i probe the motherboard i also spark it, and destroy my probes.
Since voltage goes down to almost 0V and current is driven all on it, i believe the current does the magic and voltage is no matter.
What do you think about it?
    Thanks

i have torn the screen apart and even down to the row of light tubes a the ends of the screen..and the connections are soldered well.
    but still not working...
i think it may be circuit board on the back of the monitor screen ..the thin strip of circuit that control the leds..
but not sure...maybe it is graphics chip on the board...i am a bit lost

If I short the wrong pins on the power strip connector to start the motherboard, will it create problems or blow fuses or IO chip ?

How about dual N & P burn up and fix? I have a Samsung monitor which keeps burning the dual mofets on the inverter circuit and once the thermal fuse was burnt. Any idea to permanently fix the issue?

Hi Sorin. If you have any good trick to show us how to find an overloading component not shorted. which mean no short, all voltage are present but the 19.5 drop to 18.5. the laptop dead.
I had sony vio shorted capacitor found on the 19v and removed. the laptop worked 1 hour and died. is any trick nothing get hot.
    thanks

Now when it's dead, do you still have ~19V power rail? If yes, follow it to power management chip checking voltage along the way and then from the chip to other supplies. Is 3.3 V (check on BIOS chip) and 5 V (check on USB) present? If some of them is gone look into that power supply. If something is overloading and not on short, it should get warm/hot too for disipating more power.

Can you see if you have 3.3V on main power supply chip?

Thank you for trying to help me.
Yes there is. This laptop is working differently the 3.3V is always present even if the 19V is not. When the 19V was shorted I still had 3.3V.
I could not find which one is the main 5V
I will try again to check if there is 3.3 on the startup chip.
there is clicking noise and the voltage is dropping after the second mosfet about 1 volt.
      Thank you again
