I have noticed that this problem is fairly common so if you haven't tried it, call Microsoft Support, sometimes they have a solution you haven't tried.
OKAY SO I CALLED AND THEY SENT ME A NEW CONTROLLER AND IT WORKED! THEY SAID THE HEADPHONE JACK IN THERE CONTROLLERS ARE GOING BAD AND THEYRE SENDING THEM OUT.

Hey so I'm playing elder scrolls right now. When I'm on my gamer tag I have zero issues. But when my friend is here and he plays on his gamer tag there's no sound in game. But when we press the Xbox button and the little menu pops up we get game volume! When we close the menu and go back into the game we have no volume again. So for some reason there's no sound in game but the sound works when we press the Xbox button once. I don't freaking understand lol its so frustrating

I play rainbow six Siege and your trick worked I can now hear but for some reason I can’t hear other people when I’m spectating them and all extra sounds like explosions, gunfire, footsteps only come out of my right ear. If you know the game rainbow six you know how hard that is because it is very important to list in that game. Hopefully you respond with an answer!

This seems to have sorted me out too. New Vizio M Series Quantum 70" and Vizio sound bar hooked up to my Series X. No audio from the soundbar and intermittent video signal. Both work now. Thank you!
I did exactly what he did so I went to video fidelity and chose HDMI (that’s what I use) and it made the screen much smaller and the audio was still cut. SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT TO DO
It was a combination of this and something that I did last time this happened (very occasionally switch on to no sound) that got it working for me this time. So a bit more detail for anyone else who’s still stuck… It’s very much something to do with HDMI signals settings confusing it/getting confused some how it seems. So the 1st/other method, followed by a combination of the two are as follows: It can sometimes be the HDMI and Optical audio settings having to be changed and then changed back that fixes it, similar to the video fidelity recommended setting fix in this video ie. switch to DVI or HDMI then back to recommended. So similarly, in audio settings change both HDMI and Optical to a setting other than your actual/usual ones, back out then change the options back again and make sure that it has remembered them and hasn’t reverted to the wrong ones again as sometimes you might notice that it doesn’t save your choices when you back out from this particular area. So I suspect it is quite glitchy about what’s actually set and get confused about the HDMI signal even when it does save the settings and appear to be correct at times. That first option didn’t work for me this time and I had already tried what is suggested in the video. So when I saw this I did things a little differently and combined the two. Firstly, in video fidelity, change to HDMI or DVI, back out but don’t change back to recommended yet. Next go and do the same with the audio settings for HDMI and Optical, change them to something else and then back out, instead of changing them back again. Now go back to video fidelity and change back to recommended at this point. Finally go back into audio settings again and now when you change HDMI and Optical back to the correct settings it should finally work.

To anyone on this video because you can't hear sound through your xbo controller via headset. Here's the first thing you do before anything else: When you go to the quick menu that pops up by pressing the xbox home button on your controller, go to system, then the audio setting. Once you're in audio, immediately look at the "headset chat mixer" volume selection. Make sure the cursor isn't all the way to the right, as that completely lowers the volume of all (non-chat) sound through your headphones. Either move the cursor to the middle, or all the way to the left to increase the volume of game/video audio, etc. Hope this helps.
