      The only downside is that they really are playing with fire when it comes to these preloaded sd cards. It's a level of pseudo-piracy and non-intuitive design that holds these back from universal mainstream appeal and I just don't know how would ever be broached unless someone like Sony or Nintendo just licensed a ton of games for them, which would never, ever happen.
      So it's such a bummer that there's no real modern intuitive way to get a regular person a handheld that just plays these games, even if Nintendo or Sony would make a slaughter selling the roms for $0.99 on a storefront.

      Sony and Nintendo don't have the license for many of these older games aside from the obvious nintendo or Sony developed ones. Sega actually help a lot with emulation and have no issues with them.
      We can just buy them, no legal issues.

    • @joeypizza2761
      @joeypizza2761 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iclonethefirst I haven't tried casting (since it's kinda inconsistent, and I don't trust a device at this price to scale to a big TV) but it does not have HDMI out. In my research on this, basically none of the mobile chipsets do big screens super well, IMO. More of a Steam deck and up feature to work well

    Quite a few TH-camrs don't really talk about a consoles ability (or lack thereof) to connect to a TV and play couch co-op. I think it's a big feature and a big deal for a lot of people looking into getting one. I'd enjoy a video from you about that side of things.

    • @electronicengineer
      @electronicengineer ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I agree with @dawsoncjames on the lack of discussion of HDMI connectivity to TV by a lot of TH-cam handheld games console reviewers Bob. It would really be awesome to know if and how well these devices perform with a TV screen connected as well as standalone. This would (in my mind at least) make the purchase price of the handheld unit a lot easier to rationalize, since if the TV performance was good also, you would automatically have both the portable game play functionality fun plus a home TV console setup to be able to play with a friend with an extra Bluetooth controller. JUST my opinion Bob but by adding this additional information to your already awesome handheld reviews, it would really set your reviews miles apart from the "rest" and make them even more comprehensive and make your reviews "shine" even more... Just my $0.02. Have a great weekend! Fred

    • @Dracossaint
      @Dracossaint ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Purpose driven devices are kinda more important. Is it nice to have both? Of course, but there will always be a compromised experience in one way or another. It has video out, but lacks Bluetooth. So you better have a long ass cable and the longer the cable, the less stable the signal. Etc etc etc. If ya want both get a steamdeck and a USB c dock or something similar. It will pay for itself based on its simplicity alone

      these micro HDMI ports are very unreliable, I think that's why a lot of devices ship without them, reviewers go mad about not having micro HDMI but when you actually try them out the screen blinks every time you rock the console a little bit, making them pointless in practice.

    Hey Bob. I’m the one who asked you to make the 405m video. Good to see you’re going to anbernic. I want to get a rp3+ just to have at home. I use my 405m as my out of the door handheld that I take to work or whatever. Most of the reasons to put gammaOS on the 405m and 505 are to clear up the problems with the screens. Which the 405v has the same screen. Also the 405m and 505 have problems with the shoulder buttons when playing google games. Like if you want to play dead cells or call of duty mobile, stock firmware doesn’t have the right mapping for the shoulder buttons. I know you put on gammoOS lite but I still think you should put more stock into the OS cuz it’s only one dude and he’s doing a lot of work. Love your vids man. Thanks for reading.

    4:18 Anbernic should really make the face buttons in the Nintendo style (A in the right) but with the colors of the PlayStation (so the A is a deep red and the B is a light blue). I think that would be a sick way to customize your Anbernic!

    The rumor ive heard as to why these sd cards are coming with very specifically mario and pokemon-less lobraries is because those IP's are the ones nintendo most closely monitors for legal action.
    I shudder to think about how much money nintendo, sega and sony could make by making a storefront and selling the roms of their old, no longer supported titles for $1-$5 for people to use on emulators. It wpuld have its issues, but would have the same kind of effect that steam has had on PC game piracy. I like supporting the creator when i can, and buying a used worn out pokemon emerald cartridge on ebay is not that, nor do i think nintendo charges a fair price for many of their switch ports (though i do buy some)
    Charge a reasonable price and make it more convenient than piracy, and piracy basically goes away. Gabe newell was totally right.

    The main reason for custom os is to fix that ugly sharpening, that anbernic still didn't fix for some reason. You won't notice it that much playing mario, but it is very apparent in resident evil games or any other game with dark locations or just overall higher contrast scenes. Also it somehow makes pixelated textures look even more outdated somehow. I heard that gamma team is already working on gamma os for rg405v

    If Anbernic can make a comfortable NDS/3DS emulation device, I think I might just jump over the moon. NDS and 3DS games are always some of the hardest to emulate with both hardware and software. If their new device is ergonomic and can ACTUALLY handle 3DS games, then I would be willing to bet that the 3DS consoles on eBay wouldn't cost so much anymore.

    • @54356776
      @54356776 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great point that I honestly hadn't thought about. Yeah, 3ds consoles and games are going for more than a switch at the minute and rising. It's ridiculous.
      Edit: DS is still dirt cheap though and its the best way to play ds games.

      I've been complaining about the 3DS prices for over a year now, and it has only gotten worse. There's just really no good option if you want to be able to play all 3DS games, other than a 3DS. As far as NDS/DSi prices, my collection has been loving where they're at. :)

    • @itranscendencei7964
      @itranscendencei7964 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I highly disagree. It's still only one screen. I have a Steam Deck, and it can run some 3DS games with Citra but it is definitely not ideal at all if you play any game that actually uses the touchscreen. Also, if you want to try and make an argument for NDS specifically, go play The World Ends With You on an Android phone. Then come back and tell that it was "fine".

    As for why SNES games look stretched, many emulators use an aspect ratio of 8:7 for the SNES due to that closer resembling the original pixel aspect ratio of the console before it’s displayed to a TV.
    The 4:3 “stretched” look seen on the system is closer to the original console on a CRT TV, and it’s a long-standing debate on which is more correct for certain games.

    I got an Anbernic RG353V for my kid, and it was on point with expectations, and in tinkering with it in preparation for her birthday kinda made me want one of these myself. This would be the one for me perhaps. The 353 is good in every way except battery life, but it's plenty for a kiddo, and I'm probably not going to have long sessions on one of these. That was the dealbreaker on the Steam Deck for me, because I know it's worth every penny, but for my use case, if I'm playing games out and about, which isn't too often, I'd rather play TotK for 3ish hours than Elden Ring for less, but I'd love a device like this for sure.

    3:37 While I understand the comparison to the RG35XX, I think that this should probably be compared more to an actual Gameboy or even a Gameboy Pocket/Color; most of these 'portable' devices are so uncomfortable to hold (I have an RG35XX and I have average-sized hands) and I just think that calling it "bigger than an RG35XX" isn't really a negative. I do care that it should be 'pocketable' but how pocketable is it? I think the Gameboy Pocket/Color are perfect examples of that.

    "Can I play the game?" 6:20 Good thing you didn't try Okami. You'd be asking that for 20 minutes. I've always favored horizontal handhelds. The vertical style doesn't scale up well in my opinion. And the shoulder buttons always seem less than ideal. But the performance looks pretty good and it's nice to see what's going on with these things. As others have mentioned, a lot of emulators default to the slimmer pixel resolution for SNES, but it never displayed that way on our TVs. Or it could just be that big screen making it seem like it's not 4:3.

    Are you planning on reviewing the CRKD Nitro Deck? You always do very thorough and critical reviews of controllers when you do them and I want to know what you think about that as a Switch controller option. They talk a great game, and If its as good as they claim, I want one, but if it sucks I don't want to waste my money.

    you should test android games like slay the spire, gta games, AM2R and other neet stuff like that. I always wonder how these handhelds would run those

    15:42-16:02 That's wise advice from a good teacher.....although I can tell he never looked at the mortgage they would've pulled out in order to pay for that newer, shiny device.
    But still wise advice.
    Coming from a used tech buyer and seller who buys the older crap for cheap yet still gets it running to use free, open source programs to run all that nice shat and spat.

    I’ve been using the retroid pocket 3+ it can run up to PS2 but for those you have to mess with the settings on a game by game basis to get the game running. Other than that it’s a solid handheld imo.

      @@uliseschio it can run most GameCube games yes but some not at full speed. There’s a spreadsheet online the community has made to see the game list and what settings to put to get the games to work right online

    Hey for future videos, a good benchmark for testing gamecube emulation is to test a game thats notoriously unstable and thats Tony Hawk American Wasteland, even on the rog ally i had trouble getting a consistent 40 fps, on my brand new phone it barely even gets 20 fps

    It's going to be hard for anything to do DS/3DS just for the fact it's two screens. How long do you think it'll be till someone just makes a two-screen retro console?

  • @colinmartin9797
    @colinmartin9797 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It just seems like we're on the cusp of greatness and in the next year we'll finally get these with proper ps2 and 3ds performance.
    I see the appeal of this model, I generally prefer vertical, but I needed pocketable. So the 405m was worth it as a durable pocketable device. I even found someone who released the files and 3d printed my own stacked shoulder buttons that work perfectly. Am even painting them with urushi lacquer to have a nice ultra premium feel.
    Personally, I feel like an updated 405m with a chipset that can do all ps2 properly, a slightly higher resolution screen that gets a tad brighter and has hdmi out would be a device I'd pay $200 for. Maybe even 250.

    • @ancientflames
      @ancientflames ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s not really the devices. It’s the emulation itself. You can use a phone with a snapdragon 8 gen 2 and lots of ps2, GameCube etc games still just won’t work well.

    • @colinmartin9797
      @colinmartin9797 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ancientflames I mean, my snapdragon 888 s21 ultra throws down on every ps2 game I can throw at it, so it wouldn't surprise me if these higher gen chips in the next year or two make it into retro handhelds. And holy crap has the emulation software itself gone insane in development since 2020. Just yuzu alone on my steam deck. 3 months after totk came out it went from like 17-20fps to a stable 30-40.
      Even the 35xx is getting n64 ports of stuff like Mario 64. It's nuts. These retro handhelds have driven a metric assload of development, and that's sick. So yeah, I think we're maybe a year out from a proper full ps2 capable chipset handheld under $200.

    Android is great for emulation. Just has to not be a phone os they used in lieu of their laziness. I'm interested in maybe a slightly larger fan so the noise is less shrill

    • @Weneedaplague
      @Weneedaplague ปีที่แล้ว

      Also the softness in the snes games is probably a default settings that uses linear filters instead of nearest neighbor.

  • @joshmo675

    I'm interested in how they work as retro consoles. I know some plug in to tv's but can I use a wireless controller? NES style? Can I save or change games with the wireless controller? I can't with NES controllers on Super console X. I guess there's not enough buttons for RetroArch

    The best thing about playing Burnout games on underpowered hardware is the announcer who keeps bugging you sounds absolutely wasted, which makes what he says kinda make more sense, "Hey racers, there's some newlyweds in the café, why don't you takedown a car in there to give them a real morning boost!"
