The tech industry peaked with the clamshell design.
Literally every portable device is better with a clamshell
Laptops, game consoles, even phones (if only smartphone makers can figure out the rough spots!)
@@GyroCannon if Apple ever does like an iPhone SE Fold, I am so in. Price depending of course.
@@GyroCannon Running a fold myself, the only "rough" spot I can really see is the soft inner screen, but I don't have a problem with that myself. Definitely worth a look if you're interested in the clamshell design!

How many dreamcast games does it have preinstalled?
Moral of the story is “Don’t touch the Game Rooms tab!” 😂
That was the only way to play before they added in retro arch but decided to just not remove the old games room which is strange.
Anyone who accidentally uses the game room and finds their Rom corrupted, there is a clear cache under the main settings for the device.
Thank you for mentioning the stupid broken Game Room tab. First hour messing with it I was dealing with crashes in different systems because I had no idea there were was another CORRECT area to launch games from
Where is the correct area to start games I’m about to get my one
@@uhhello4395 the second tab it's the only other place you can open games from lol
@uhhello4395 RA room aka retroarch. The game room is the legacy way to play on the stock OS before RA was added. Not sure why they didn't remove it.
In regards to the comment about the color accuracy of the RG35XXSP vs the original, there's a setting under core options>video>color correction that adjusts the colors to match the display of the real GBA/GBC. There's also a setting right under it for interframe blending to mimic the ghosting of the original LCD display (which is not enabled by default for GBA). According to their description, games like f-zero and Wave Race "aggressively exploit" LCD ghosting for transparency effects.
When it comes to design, I don't think people understand how aesthetic the GBA SP was.
Also, I have to say that I do miss a clam-shell design, it protects the screen better
I'd be stoked if Nintendo brought back the clamshell right as all these wide competitors start emerging
Clam-shell designs outside of nostalgia are just great. Like what you said, you get a built in screen protector pretty much

Portmaster is a massive game changer for me. I’ve played all the retro systems I’m interested in to death. So my ideal device would be one that I can play modern retro-style indie games on. Thank you SO much for mentioning it!! I had no idea this existed!
The game rooms tab is almost like an eldritch monster XD. He tells you "beware of that certain tab" and we never see what it actually is... Spooky... Will definitely get this! I have had a Powkiddy V90 for the last couple years and this one looks like a great upgrade and at a decent price too! Thank you for the video!
So I have both the Powkiddy and RG35XX SP, (they are the only ones I have) and by far this is amazing! So much better, and it puts the powkiddy to shame! The only notable thing is out of the box it doesn’t come with many big Nintendo titles like the powkiddy did, so you or someone you know might have to add the roms to it
its fine just older emulators

Was just watching your Christmas gift guide and saw this device mentioned so I came back to watch the video. Since it works out of the box and has clam shell you have convinced me to get my first ever emulator device. I was still on the fence when i went to the site but then i saw it in transparent green, reminds me of my old Jungle green n64 so i had to get it. Thanks for all the reviews, I watched several trying to make a decision on if i wanted an emulator device and if so which one.
WULFF really thought we wouldn't recognize the Mirror's Edge music in the intro. Man of taste.
This is such a great gift for anyone who likes retro games. Got mine a week ago. The optional case it comes with for $10 more is really nice too
It’s a clamshell! It is the case!
Hope you do a video for the Anbernic Cube too... My husband loves his RG35XXSP and he is using it stock. I like that when you throw a second SD in, it does the setup on it for you and all you need to do is take it back out and throw some ROMS on it and when you go to play it lets you choose either sd.
Nah, I threw Batocera on it. By far and away the cleanest, prettiest experience I’ve used.
Knulli, a Batocera fork is even better and more updated.
@@WidgetdudeI’ve been looking at installing that onto my Trimui Smart Pro. I may have to finally install it. Thanks!
@@ht27777 yeah, it's all I'm using now for both the RG35xx H and the SP. AND you can just swap the SD card from one device to the other once you've got it setup. I can't wait until Knulli adds sleep functionality that's better.
@@Widgetdude retrogamecorp just did a video on it
@@jesusbarrera6916 I saw! I'm not surprised he chose Knulli
The best part about sleep mode is that it can be changed to "Turn off" when closed, which will keep the battery from dying, and when you turn it back on it will resume your game where you left off!
This thing is quite literally something I could have only dreamed of as a kid.
The only difference between my "perfect nintendo handheld" that I drew with pencil in a notebook is that this doesn't have cartridge slots, instead just having all of the games on a single micro SD card. So even better.
Got one, left it stock, love it, love it, love it! It's why I prefer Linux over Android. If they get the firmware right, it's simply easier to use. Pull it out of the box and PLAY. No messing about with settings, no hours long setup required. Just open the box, pull it out and PLAY. Great job Anbernic, and great job Bob on an excellent review!
has it held up?
I was so excited for this one, but mine came with a broken hinge. The screw wasn't seated and so it's only attached on one end and the screw is floating around in the case. Was super bummed because the materials and UI seem very nice.
That's hilarious
Im sorry for your trouble. Mine came perfectly fine, there is some backlight bleeding toward the bottom edges, but its relatively minor. I dont have conventional earbuds but Ive seen many complaints about that jack port so I plan to borrow some to test mine out.
@@streygaq6988 Thanks, bro. GBA is my fav, so I'm eager to get it handled at some point. Glad your's is good, though. I'm sure it's just manufacturing problems on my end.
That’s super sad I hope you are able to send it back and get a replacement for it because from what I see on Amazon it says the hinge is reinforced.
At least yours didn't catch fire or melt like 2 ppl on reddit.
Using Mirror's Edge at the start for tue review was just chef kiss 😮💨🤌🏻
Just got mine in the mail. Bought it for my wife since the SP was her handheld as a kid (and it'll be fun to tinker a little bit as I haven't had a linux handheld before, only android.) But knowing it works right out of the box is very nice (also good to know about avoiding that game rooms tab. Good info.)
My favorite device so far has been the retroid pocket flip. I started on a RP3+ and then my wife stole it, she was always playing DS games on it. So, I bought a flip because I love clamshells. I really hope we get a flip 2 with RP4 internals, but I really don't know if that's gonna happen. I'd like to think so, since I heard they sold out their production run of flips (hence why they stopped selling them on their site), but they did have some problems with the hinge at first, so you never know I guess.
What does she look like?
The Anbernic RG35XXSP at $89 on is on my wishlist at Amazon, but I am waiting for the Miyoo Mini Flip to see which one is best since the Powkiddy V90 is not as playable as the Anbernic RG35XXSP. Thank you @WulffDen for making this super awesome review! ❤

@@jang.6097 thank you maybe I should stick with buying the Anbernic RG35XXSP. I honestly like the silver color on it and the transparent black looks nice too.
Thank you for the review and for calling out the improvements stock OS has made! Also of note is, that all H700 devices (Plus, H, 2024 and also 28xx) eventually get updated to the same firmware by Anbernic. So the performance and QoL features are also included in latest Plus firmware, for example. It's essentially the same device apart from the form factor (and whether or not it has WIFI and Bluetooth for some devices).
It's also nice to see these so high up in your recommendations. I'm wondering though, why is 28XX so far down compared to Plus and SP; is it because of missing WIFI and Bluetooth or something else (small buttons)? Because with updated stock OS, it does have the same performance and features as others.
Also on a personal note, I'm happy that Anbernic went full on with H700 after release of the 35XX Plus. More models means more devices and bigger community means more interest from CFW developers.. It's great to see the improvements on that front as well since I first installed Batocera beta on my Plus; the support is great and the choice is there to have the software and user experience which one likes the best.
I, for the love of God do not know how you guys can keep the naming structures down. We'll done, I am truly impressed. Rg35xx3322zz 😮
Well for anbernic it's pretty simple. The names are based on the screen size, and material used or orientation. Like the 35xx H is just a 35xx plus but horizontal (and with joysticks). SP is obvious. Something like the 405m. Idk about the 405m. I know it has a 4 in screen, and is metal. But the 05 I didn't understand.
I’ve been absolutely loving mine! I’m working on designing a 3d printed handle for it to make it more comfortable to hold for a long time.
Thank you for what you do ! .. I rely on your reviews for my purchases .. and you haven't failed me yet !
Honestly this video convinced me to finally get an emulation device, and I'm looking forward to getting this one.
I love this thing. I play it every night. Been playing Mega Drive games I could never beat as a kid: Alisia Dragoon, Comix Zone, Coolspot, etc. And of course classic Arcade games like Cadillac and Dinossaurs, PS1 games like Koudelka, damn, thousand of games just opened up. Of course, I have a Vita, which is much more powerful, and a Steam Deck, but its just so simple to pick and play, and when you have or want to stop, you just close the shell and it will restart you back where you were. And with all the retroarch conforts of save states, fast rewind or fast forward, retroachievements, etc., it just takes the pain it was from decades ago to finish a game in a single life or continue. Loving it.
Was happy to hear the Mirror's Edge music in the intro!
I was waiting for this form factor for years and I finally have it as my first purchase 😊
Bob, I love your no BS reviews! Please consider doing an RG Cube review if they send you one. Would love your thoughts on the Sega D-pad in regards to accuracy and how it plays with precision platformers and puzzle games like Tetris. 🍻🤘🏼🔥
That part where you got hit with the ice hit home sooo hard.
Hey Bob, awesome review of the new handheld and love the comparisons as always. Also just letting u know there was a double over lapped Audio file at 13:45 in the video, not sure if that was intended but it was very oddly out of place. Keep up the great work Fam!!
11:35 it's also easy to 'not' do tho - for the same reason u just said - probly why they picked the power button..? 🤷♂
this makes me want to fix my sp’s buttons and maybe grab a flash cart for it, such a great design
Got mine last night! I have medium to large hands and the Miyoo Mini Plus is too small for me to play classic fighting games. I love how this is a little chunkier and keeps my hands from cramping up
'Rebeccas Puzzle' from Mirrors Edge... I LOVE it! I use to have that tune on repeat when I went for runs or working out!
I can't decide if you or Retro Game Corps is the best channel for this kind of stuff. You both approach it differently so your channels complement each other nicely.
I already have a Miyoo Mini, so I don't *need* this, but god, is it tempting. Lol.
That being said, it's a shame MinUI loses some big features, cause it looks really nice.
I am curious about one thing tho: Did they actually mean "Game Rooms," or is it a typo of "Game ROMs?"
Another awesome video,I thought I was the only one who didn't mind the clicky buttons😅. Anbernic done well with this one. I love this device 🔥🔥
The ONE thing holding me back from getting this is that I love Miyoo, and the Miyoo Mini Flip may have cross save with the Steam Deck with custom firmware OnionOS and OnionSync.
Sweet, ordered one today for GG/SMS/GB/GBA only. Looking forward for it it arrive!
13:46 Watch out Bob there's a skinwalker behind you! It's mimicking your voice as you speak!
That was the best AD I have ever watched. 😂😂😂😂
I just got mine a few days ago. So far I’m lovin it!!
Thanks for video, really enjoying to watch
You are the only channel where I won't skip the sponsor, I always love your skits.
9:28 I believe the reason for this discrepancy is because, on the GBA, GBA SP, and even the original DS, the RGB subpixels were slightly different colors, specifically the green subpixel is actually more of a yellowish green.
I wonder if there's a way to go into the stock from our super easily on the SD card and figure out where the game rooms tab is and just boink it out of existence?
I like how Bob in the other video was like, my audience is cool enough to watch a video of a review of something others already reviewed, and he’s right, I always like Bob’s take, and he always offers another different view compared to other people in the retro space
Hey, something to replace the Miyoo mini for actually travelling with! Since I don't have to worry about the screen getting scuffed or damaged so much in the pocket on a clamshell, and it should have a roughly equivalent pocket space footprint!
The sleep mode looks inferior, unfortunately, but that's fine for the types of games I'd typically be playing on it while traveling anyway.
Got mine last week, playing Pokemon Emerald on it reeaaally feels the same when I was a kid. Loving the device!

Hello! Does ANBERNIC RG35XX SP replaced Miyoo mini in your everyday bag?
That spreadsheet is awesome! It would be even better if you were able to put on there what the most powerful system it plays, assuming everything below that works. Or if you could just have several sheets. 1 for each model showing Each emulated system it plays, rated as poor, good or excellent. And then have your affiliate link on there. You could make a master list. That would be more amazing.
We generally use retro handhelds rather than emulators, but I love watching your videos about them. I have softmodded PSP 1000, 2DS and New 3DS, which not only covers my needs pretty well (since the N64 games I'm most interested in got DS and 3DS ports, and otherwise I'm going for NES and SNES which they all can do - and my New 3DS I got for Red Viper), but also my whole family since it's just 3 of us.
My brother does have a emu handheld, though. If I ever figure out which one he has I'll probably send him any video you've done on it since he's having trouble with his games not saving. Unless he fixed that, I don't know.
I noticed with my unit that its not the speed you open it to get it to come out of sleep, but rather that you wait and give it the time to actually initialize the sleep mode (it takes a moment after closing it). If you open it again while its in the process of shutting down to sleep it wont wake up until its almost completely closed, at which point it then closes and then goes back to sleep.
I ordered 4 at the 3am launch on their site. 2 blue, black, silver. Will let my GF choose which color she wants when we do anniversary gifts, but I damn sure wanted blue to match my RG36s in blue. One of those I am sure my sister will want as she uses the RG36S I got her all the time.
I've bought 10+ ChinaBoys in the past year and a half and man. We are in the golden age right now for cheap handhelds. Future children of mine will be so spoiled on gaming...
Two thumbs up for the Mirror's edge track opening
I love this thing! I think MUOS is awesome and I love messing around with these low end emulators especially. The fact that I can play Stardew Valley, and retro roms up until ps1 is honestly crazy. I mainly play GBA,NES, and single screen DS games on here. I don’t like it as much as my Steamdeck though. Steamdeck opened up Pandora’s box and my eyes were opened lol. This new wave of handhelds is so nice and I wish I had these when I was in highschool.

Yes Tom Cruise was in the movie Cocktail back in 1988.
I Just got mine about a week ago and I absolutely adore it. The clicky ass buttons I absolutely love, I love that click for the feedback knowing that I pressed the buttons which was my only gripe With my 353 not having them (also kinda hated the size of it but thats a me issue because even the 35xxsp Is way to small because I have very large hands) but the nostalgia factor along with the clicky buttons and the out of the box presets for the emulators just nailed it for me. My only problem is that mine came with a darken filter set on by default that I cant seem to get actually save the change for Every other setting that I change will save after i leave the game and come back so if anyone has any advice or even just a step by step tutorial on how yall got the change to stick let me know!
You have to disable the simple settings and there's an override core settings or something along those lines. Try saving with this.. that's what I did to change some settings on mine before it died 😅
(Just saying it didn't die because of that.. looks like it was when I plugged it in I think)
@@cangel8563 Thank you that worked
Funny the guy from garlic had a problem with your tweet just asking. Garlic seems like it will never get done for the plus series.
My biggest gripe with the 35xxsp so far is I wish I could buy one in the pearl blue colour I have for the og in my drawer.
I had the OG all black one what a trip down memory lane
Does anyone know if there will be other colour options in the near future, or will someone be making custom shells for it? I'd really prefer a red one or a black one (not translucent).
not so smooth from start. Sonic 2 MD isn't working fine. I changed cfw to muOS for this reason
I am considering buying one of these, the only real thing stopping me is the color selection. I wish they had more variety! I was actually about to modify an original Sp then this thing magically showed up. I'll probably still modify it, but this device is more versatile.
Can ya play heart gold soul silver from right out the box?? DS?? If soo ill buy rn I have the RG35XX
For some reason when I try to launch a ds game it straight up doesn't boot. I get the "loading" screen and then the screen stays black. When I press the power button, it doesn't change joystick mode, instead it puts the system in hibernation. On that note as well, game audio never works until I put the system into hibernation and wake it up again by holding the power button. I don't understand how you got yours perfect out of the box, mine definitely isn't.
Wow, I am sold. Clamshell and emulation is good outta the box.
Got the clear black one as my first handheld. Only using it for GB-GBA as i've got every console but im absolutley loving it.
I'm still waiting on the Miyoo Flip to come out and for reviews to show up, but this is a strong contender to replace my MM+
Fantastic review of the XXSP
This is Anbernics best device yet (besites the RG35XXH, and RG 556).
Have they fixed the Plus? I prefer that look and want that but don't want to get less functionality.
I really love mine. I loved my original RG35xx too, so it was a natural move up. Ps1 is mainly my jam on it but I’m really digging the Dreamcast support as well
Currently run a mix of my own acquired roms for various systems and some of what the stock card came with. Been exploring the MAME selection from stock and it’s been a blast
The Powkiddy RGB30 and the Anbernic RG35XXH are the 2 devices that made me jump into retro handheld gaming again.
This looks like the Pico-8 machine I've been waiting for!
Recently just got it and mine didn’t have n64 GBA GBC SNES am I dumb and just not doing something correct or did I get the wrong one
I've been using the Games Room tab over the RA Game tab for the last 2 weeks and have had no problems with it, even playing PS1 games. I did notice that the RA Game tab had a couple consoles the Games Room didn't. specifically the Pico, Tamagachi Pokemon games, Virtuaboy, PCE-CD, MSX, Nintendo DS, N64, Atomiswave, Naomi, and PC Ports, most of which I'm not even gonna be playing on this system... so if someone can tell me what's wrong with the Games Room other than using a different emulator, that'd be nice. Cause they both seem to work the same to me.
Any suggestion for a SD card reader and a second SD card to buy for this thing? maybe 256gb +? does it matter which 1 I buy? I have heard sandisk is a good brand
This is the PERFECT emulation device, everything I've ever wanted from one.
Love my 351v. Can't wait for my SP to get here. This is gonna live in my pocket.
I wish I could get one of these! I hope I do at some point because it sounds like the perfect thing to both keep me hyped about my interests AND keep me off other less desirable distractions like social media. I find it that retrogaming has a level of simplicity that feels therapeutic to me and helps me deal with my anxiety and ADHD!
Mine is right next to me on my desk and it's my favorite piece of tech in a long time!
I already have a Retriod Pocket buy I might get this just for that clamshell form factor.
