I think it did the next year. But they changed the mechanics and storyline of it drastically and changed the character to some she/them jester named NiGHTS.
I played this game numerous times when I was a kid in 90s. I still have this game for my old Sega Genesis and love it. The music and color of the game content from Ristar is so nostalgic!

I was born in 01 15 1995 and started playing the game when I was two years old and it became one of my biggest favorites so I don't think it's forgotten it is just a little interesting kick to your childhood
This is a pretty showcase game for Genesis when you realise what it's doing with all the backgrounds and stuff, where it's usually showing three overlapping background layers (one done with some sprites) plus an overlapping HUD (also done with sprites), lots of row/line scrolling to create even more parallax, using shadow/highlight mode for some faux lighting effects, etc. For me, it's an interesting one to study to see how it might be done on SNES and where some areas could even be improved there due to the SNES' specific capabilities with more colours, more background layers, more advanced transparency effects, etc. And, because the Genesis is much better than SNES with sprites for the most part, it's about figuring out how to basically flip things around and do all the background stuff within the superior actual background capabilities of the SNES as much as possible to then give it full access to all the sprites for only sprite stuff. I think the SNES could do and improve on this version in many ways, but it still can't ever get the wider horizontal view due the Genesis' higher horizontal resolution. But, to compensate there, I would improve the camera to show more of the level view ahead of the player in the direction they are facing and moving, which should actually mitigate that very well in the case, since the original game doesn't do that and actually shows less view of the level ahead of the player. An interesting thought exercise. :)
Cool! I remember my brothers plaing this game when we were kids. They had a hard time of completing the game. Quite a father-son reunion in the end. :)
Omg I remember this game!!!!!!! This was my fav! So many memories but I don’t remember finishing it😅 Anyway if you could play “Harvest Moon” or “Fate” these were my fav game back in 2000s idk if you already played them but if you get a chance would you please play them:)
This game is on the sega ultimate collection for the psp & ps3 AND on the European version sega mega drive collection disc for the psp & ps3 Cuz i really want this game but its a crazy expensive game here in Canada for the genesis and game gear its $50 just for the cartridge . Cheaper to get the ultimate collection!
I wanted to take a break from playing SNES games for a few days, cause I had a Sega itch and also wanted to play a Sega Genesis game I haven’t tried,I’m glad I chose wisely to try this gem of a platformer. With all your help I was able to find all secret items from chest, the only thing that annoyed me was last bonus stage before final bosses,me trying to hit those cliffs just right to get to top corner for final prize seemed like forever I almost quit but I still stuck with it until I finally got it. It’s a really clever game using grabbing mechanics for everything, swinging took me a while to get use to but knowing the timing to know when to let go makes it that much fun to fly for a few. I’m currently playing threw Super Metroid and Donkey Kong County 2. I’ve played threw a hour and more with both games and we know how challenging those snes games can be. Ristar was a nice distraction for a day or two since it’s a short playthrew but also feels like your playing lost history of Genesis games cause in 95 most people moved on to PlayStation and Sega Saturn so it’s still cool 😎 to find games that got lost in the shuffle and now you can really appreciate what Sega tried to pump out that last year before 3D games took over.
The JP and international versions of this game have so many subtle differences; I should learn rom hacking one day so I can stitch them together into one game with the best of both.

Sega's forgotten alternative mascot. Definitly a top Genesis game even though it never got a sequel sadly.
This was my favorite Genesis game, hands down.
At least he made a cameo on Sega Racing
He definitely had a better first game than Sonic.
I think it did the next year. But they changed the mechanics and storyline of it drastically and changed the character to some she/them jester named NiGHTS.
I mean there's a game gear version of this that's basically a different game
Definitely one of the best one-hit wonders in video gaming history.
Played this game as a kid. One of the best games I’ve played. It was hard at first but got the hang of it after playing it.

Ristar was developed by Sonic Team, which is why you sometimes hear sounds from Sonic 2 and Sonic 3.
